Natalie La Rose) [EOY #40] Commentary Starting the top 40 are two of the biggest names in Dutch house, Tiësto who's been DJing since before Oliver Heldens was born, and Oliver Heldens who hasn't. Neverless it does seem to have more of the Heldens stamp to it which is great because I love his brand of future house. Unfortunately he seems to have had a bit of a quiet year in my chart even though he released quite a few singles, most of them didn't manage to chart. The song was a bit of a success as 'Wombass', peaking at #23 for two weeks. However it was the single mix featuring Natalie La Rose that really brought the song to life, giving it a huge rebound to number two in the week of its release, followed by three weeks at number one. Yes, we start the top 40 with a number one single, and perhaps we finish with one too. The vocals give the already great instrumental an extra oomph, and the drop is absolutely banging. It also eventually made its way into the UK top 40, yay!

It was never going to take off but it did do well to get over a million Spotify plays for a self-released song. I did discover it from a Spotify recommendation though which probably explains that playcount. It's also the only song in the top 40 that did not make the weekly top 15 so well done to it there, it's a real grower of a song. It's got some outstanding hooks and a quirky vocalist.

Time on chart: 21+ weeks {15 weeks in tracking period} Video: YnwsMEabmSo Chart History (Marshmello) 2016 08 Alone [EOY #38] Commentary Marshmello has gained a lot of hype over the year and eventually gave us a banger of a tune in the 3rd quarter with 'Alone', Monstercat's biggest release to date even making the Billboard Hot 100, no push was given in the UK though. It's a seriously good melodic trap tune, I do love the unexpected turn it takes for the drop too and the synths that sound kinda trancey. This was also the BJSC winner that never was, as it was going to get sent by mdh until he made it a bit TOO obvious he was considering it.

In its original instrumental form it got a load of hype from Radio 1 nighttime and dance anthems, though I thought it was missing something and didn't chart it back then. Of course it would then get the vocal treatment, and wow does it improve it. Nadia Rose could well become one of my fave rappers of 2017 if she keeps up this quality, and from 'Tight Up' that looks likely. The drop is insane too so it's not surprising this stood out as one of the year's club smashes turned commercial hits, with it making the UK top 40 for a few weeks!

It's a brilliant tropical house effort with lush production and a decent vocal, and at one point looked like being a potential UK hit but it wasn't to be. Such a shame because this and 'Old Thing Back' are so much better than his actual chart hits. :(
January 7, 20178 yr Author OMFG some of those in that 50-65 section   SAY YOU DO!!! (Say You DON'T have it as low as that... especially below Give Me Your Love :P) Stay is definitely my fave Kygo track now, has eclipsed Firestone by virtue of a better vocal. At Night is absolutely sensational (and indeed FAR superior to Never Forget You). Huge contender for my #1 that. Roses will be right up there as well, stunning song  Of course it's wonderful to see Feel so high up, probably will remain my best ever result & what a song to do it with! Elsewhere the other highlights are Panda & Gold, 2 of the best American crossover hits (ok the latter wasn't really a hit but meh...) Roll on the top 40 (Imany hype :cheer:)I can reveal that 'Say You Do' is in fact my year-end #1... :o ...#1 drum n' bass hit of the year :basil: Ah I really like the 'Firestone' vocal, and it's got far better production on it too. Was very high in last year's EOY. Hope we see 'At Night' and 'Roses' very high in your chart then. I was pleased that 'Feel' did so well, I thought it would pre-contest but then it seemed to have a lack of hype, but it won over the silent majority! :D Dan :hi: Yay at someone actually putting the Tobtok version above the Jonas Blue version, completely agree with you there. I don't find the original massively interesting but this managed to add a bit of life into it and the vocals are definitely nicer. A shame this never took off at all and the JB version took all the attention. Gold took a little while to grow but I ended up loving the choppy vocals on it especially and it's really catchy despite not having a clue what she's even saying. I wish it had taken off in the UK in the same way it did in the US :( :DYeah it would've been nice to have the Tobtok version at least spend a few weeks in the top 75 but it got no attention. 'Gold' really could've been a top 40 hit if only it peaked on sales and streaming at the same time, I believe it peaked in both the sales 40 and streaming 40. Nice to see Panda make an appearance, was a great surprise to see that become a hit officially, definitely won't be seeing anything like then again for a while! :D Yebisah  One of my best performing entries, such a brilliant anthem and sounds absolutely bangin' on stereo speakers, definitely one I'll still be revisiting long into the future :heart:It's such a standout unique hit, it really wowed me on first few listens and looks like it had a similar effect on the world. You should've saved Yebisah for a main contest, would've done really well!! It's such a massive house tune, back in my own top 20 now because I still love it. thanks guys~ :D
January 7, 20178 yr The Right Song proved to be a surprise top 40 hit in the end, I never expected it to sneak it (same goes for Piece Of Me by the same token). Alone was really good :music: it didn't feel at all repetitive either for me which is weird considering it kinda is...
January 8, 20178 yr Still miffed about Alone ngl, point still remains that it's a massive tune though - shame it never really broke through in the UK although I assume the public would NEVER dream of taking to a song that quirky, heaven forbid they do that :o

Unfortunately it didn't progress there but it proved to be a real grower of a song for me eventually peaking at #3. Such a brilliant tropical house song really, a genre we've seen a lot of this year but this one is quite different to most.

Tinashe & Chance The Rapper) [EOY #34] Commentary Snakehips had previously made a few appearances on the Radio 1 playlist with some songs I never fully enjoyed, and I certainly never expected them to break through in such a way, but that changed with 'All My Friends', with the sublime vocals of Tinashe... and I guess I should also acknowledge the Chance rap, he certainly fits the vibe of the song with it being about how wasted everyone is on a night out, and he sounds like he's on drugs. I've never been a fan of his solo stuff but he works for this. The Snakehips production is very smooth and so refreshing in terms of chart music. Even after it spent about 10 weeks in the top 20 it still felt fresh. 'Cruel' whilst making a Zayn song listenable didn't quite do the job for me but their new one 'Don't Leave' already sounds like it could do well in my chart so look for that next year.

I'm so glad they did because 'BOSS' may well be one of my favourite Disclosure songs ever, which its addictive classic Disclosure house rhythms and 2-line vocal hook sung by Howard although pitched down so much it may as well be anyone. If this is the sound they're going for then I very much look forward to what they have in 2017.

It was a very nice surprise that sample-heavy house bangers like these can still do reasonably well, takes me back to 2006 with the structure really although the production is up to date. I did instantly love it but then it suddenly grew on me even more, spending seven weeks in the top 10. I never get tired of a full-on house banger though so this was always going to do well in my chart. Let's not speak further about David Guetta's take on the song though...

It's a commercial Drake track so of course I was going to love it. The piano chords and vocal ripped from Kyla's 'Do You Mind' work really well (aside: I wasn't aware of that song before this came about, but that's quite a decent tune) and it's good to hear Drake sing over a more house-influenced beat for once as he usually does dancehall or hip-hop, though this has a bit of a dancehall feel to it as well. It's just amazingly catchy and impossible to hate (well for me, quite a few hated it on BuzzJack and it was also my brother's least favourite hit single of the year )

It was also sent to BJSC by Aeroche this time last year and finished in 2nd, just beating us to an autoqualifier as my entry 'Monody' finished 3rd (that's still to come in this EOY by the way). The rhythms in this are so brilliant though and I also love the vocal, and it also becomes the highest BJSC song in the EOY not sent by myself that didn't become a worldwide chart hit.

Bebe Rexha) [EOY #29] Commentary Martin Garrix released a lot of songs this year and became the world's top ranking DJ so it's been a very big year for him. Out of his releases this was the only commercial release of the year and is apparently the first single from his awaited debut studio album. It's a big change in direction for him, and some may see it as chasing trends but I think he does it really well, and it was great seeing this become another top 10 hit for him. Bebe Rexha has such a good vocal on this as well, which is a big step up for her too as I wasn't a huge fan of her other hits ('Take Me Home', 'Hey Mama' or 'Me, Myself & I'). I really look forward to what we'll see from Garrix next year, and if that collab with Ed Sheeran ends up on "÷" then that's possibly another big hit in the waiting.
January 9, 20178 yr I actually don't mind One Dance really, 15 weeks at #1 was ridiculous but I'd rather it happened to that Drake song than pretty much any of his others! In the Name of Love is great! I like the new sound he's got, definitely back on track for me after the huge generic misfire of Don't Look Down. Animals remains his best, a rare instance of me actually liking an instrumental song :o (well, almost instrumental)
