I think Fast Car is definitely the worst Jonas Blue single for me, I hate the original anyway and the dance remake just feels so forced and the none of it is catchy. PS and BYS are massively better though, I wish the latter would just be a big chart hit too :(

Commentary

 

This was a brilliant discovery from BJSC (where it of course won the contest I hosted!), completely unlike anything I've heard before but it's such a tune. Its length (8 minutes!) works to its advantage too as it has all that time to build up, that introduction is so good. The tribal drums come in at just the right time and we even get a chant like vocal throughout. Vici Vici also does what many producers never would and effortlessly change the tempo during the song, and we get some excellent drops. It's a real journey of a song which I love, definitely one of the best crafted songs of the year.

I enjoyed Just Say a little but I would have much preferred a banger in the same vein as that but it was still enjoyable. I would have liked more of Tinashe's swagger too because as you say, you can't even tell it's her.

 

Broken Flowers is a great track so I'm glad it was re-released and at least heard by more people due its radio playlisting. I wish it could've been a big hit though, it would have been nice to have something different in the charts and the production is gorgeous.

Some Tinashe swag would've been nice but the song works just the way it is really. It's better than TTML® for me anyway.

It was great hearing Broken Flowers on the radio so for that it's good that it was re-released.

This is another journey of a song (at 6 minutes long, but it doesn't drag at all), and though it's not quite as epic as 'Free Tibet', it's a right banger of a tune. That may be the best use of slap bass I've ever heard in a song, and it all sounds so funky and fresh. If you only know them for 'D.A.N.C.E.' then listen to this now!!

This just really gets to me lyrically, such a sad song which I now associate with moving on to the next stage of my life as well as having lost one of my grandparents. The production is just so great and the vocals are beautiful though, so it does a great job of hitting you right in the feels. :cry: Sometimes saying goodbye is just so emotional, and this song captures that feeling perfectly. Glad to see it's getting some sort of justice in BJSC anyway by qualifying in TBO Rejects.

One of my favourite discoveries of the year has to be Bishop Briggs, her blend of indie and trap alongside her brilliant vocal performance is really fresh and needed in the blogpop music scene and I'm on board. She's grown a small Buzzjack fanbase too since 'Wild Horses' was entered to BJSC so here's hoping some real life success will follow soon enough. 'Pray (Empty Gun)' is a particular favourite, it's her at her best really. She really belts it out in that chorus and contrasts that well throughout the rest of the song.

Disclosure knockoff it may be, but it's a really good Disclosure knockoff. Besides, we don't get enough of the 'Latch' sound in the dance charts anyway so this is quite refreshing. The guy's deep voice works well and the production is great. In short, it's a banger. Not much else I can say.

I still haven't listened to the full album as I generally don't listen to albums, but the singles this era are so much better, it's such a big improvement.

An interesting deep house remix of Maverick Sabre's track 'I Need' (the original of which dates about 5 years now). I disliked the original for being too boring so this version is a vast improvement. The remix actually dates from 2013 (and was also originally 9 minutes long, Spinnin' condensed it to a more digestible 3:30 though) but was released on Spinnin' this year which brought it to my attention. It's just so chill, like relaxing on a beach or something. Maverick's odd voice just somehow works for it too despite me finding it a bit annoying in the original version (but mostly boring, which this remix definitely is not).

It's a generic tropical house song yes but the quirky vocals are what set it above songs like 'The Mack', and the whirring flute synth in the chorus is brilliant. It took a while to even enter my chart and even longer to peak, so if you haven't heard it before you may not be a huge fan on first listen but trust me it's brilliant! I do love a good sleeper hit in my chart and this isn't even the highest song on the EOY to have missed my top 20 :cheer:

We got the return of house legend Armand Van Helden this year, and what a comeback he made giving us the brilliant 'Wings', based around a sample of 'I Won't Let You Down' (not the Rita Ora song). I did laugh at some uneducated people in the YouTube comments section thinking this was an Armin van Buuren and Oliver Heldens collab project, like how do people not know of AvH? :lol: It's just a great throwback house tune, very refreshing amongst all the other producers trying to stay on trend just to get a good old classic housey sample-based banger.

Commentary

 

Everyone may remember Otto Knows for 'Million Voices' but what the general public sadly aren't aware of is the good tunes he continues to put out now. I'd say 2016 is his best year to date in terms of output, as he's released two songs great enough to make my EOY Top 100, and his most recent single 'Not Alone' is yet another banger set to climb my chart. 'Dying For You' is a well crafted progressive house song, really staying true to the Swedish house style we don't see all that much of anymore now that the Avicii trend-bandwagonners have moved on, very much helped a great vocal by Alex Aris formerly of Max Elto/Taped Rai who we are starting to see appear on dance tracks. Both this and 'Dive' were top 40s in my chart, hopefully he has more in him. And then the lovely string section from Lindsey Stirling just adds that extra flavour to it. Well worth a listen.

That David Guetta history took ages! :lol: Anyway Guetta teamed up with Disciples for 'No Worries' giving him his fifteenth top ten hit which would be an even higher number if the chart stretched back to 2006! It's a fun carefree song even with the random unnecessary shouts of MONEY CAR HOUSE etc. in the drop. It was good to see Disciples finally follow up the success of HDIYL although it was too late for them to actually capitalise on it and even with Guetta's name the song was a big flop. :(

Commentary

 

Tove Lo came back after a lot of features with a great pop song 'Cool Girl', although it had its share of haters as well and ultimately did not make the UK top 40 (though good streams kept it top 75 for a while) and the album kinda flopped on its arse. Shame really as I thought she had potential to get bigger. The production here is so good and I do like Tove's lyrics, interestingly the song is sung from the female perspective of keeping it cool but really wanting a proper relationship, instead of being just a straight up love song.

People criticised this for being boring, but I didn't think it was and usually I'm the first to say when something is boring. The minimalist aspect to this just works very well with the subdued vocals that really bring out the emotion of the lyrics. It takes a while but it does hit you, and it was good to see this become a mainstream hit too.

Commentary

 

The guy behind novelty dance track 'Cake' getting a UK hit single was one of the most surprising things to happen to the chart this year. It's such a good tune though, perfect for the summer which was particularly warm this year probably helping it ascend the chart. The music vid has to get a shout out too for being possibly the cutest ever. The song really encapsulates all the feelings that good sunny weather brings and it's got a very catchy melody to it. Let's hope he gives us another banger in time for next summer.

Cool Girl and Sunshine are both great tracks from the summer - the former of which especially, was surprised to see that be such a streaming hit. It's definitely the best track from Lady Wood - on another note, what a cringey album name :puke2:

 

Waves is also good, I couldn't get into it enough to chart it though.

 

i hate u, i love u has nice at first even if the stylizing is horrendous and far too ZAYN-esque for my liking. Olivia O'Brien/olivia o'brien made a solo version of this and it's awful :heehee:

'Cool Girl' is decent enough but Tove is capable of so much better so I was pretty underwhelmed with it being a lead single. And yeah, I certainly wouldn't have expected to see Gnash here! My opinion has gone back and forth on 'I Hate U I Love U' so many times which makes the title of it rather fitting :lol:
