January 16, 20178 yr All Night is great. I was kind of :/ and a bit worried that The Vamps had finally given up and sold out when I heard they were going tropical house, but I was very pleasantly surprised! After the slightly underwhelming I Found A Girl, it was refreshing to hear them take on a new sound and still keep their distinct style.

I was worried that they'd just jump on any trend to get a hit but it's really refreshing and has paid off for sure. It helps that Brad's got quite a quirky voice which shows off his personality I think. Thanks mdh :D
January 16, 20178 yr Author Songs http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx240/MarthaJonesFan/Cover%20Sleeves/Ryan%20Lawrie%20-%20If%20Only.png 4 Ryan Lawrie - If Only - 6-10-15-26-X-1-2-4-5-7-11-14-15-15-17-10-16-17-… (18+ non-consecutive weeks) This has had one of the weirdest chart runs out of any song in my chart in 2016! 20 year old Scottish singer/songwriter Ryan Lawrie released If Only back in February, and I discovered it in mid-May. Ryan was taking part in a competition, hoping to win the chance to open for Capital FM's Summertime Ball, and he won! That's how I found this song. I liked the unique production instantly, and his voice is great. Its initial chart run for me gave it two weeks in the top 10, but it fell quickly after that and only spent 4 weeks in my top 40. If it wasn't for a certain event that came later, it would've been nowhere near this high in my EOY! Fast forward to the end of August and the first auditions episode of The X Factor. A young lad introduced himself as Ryan Lawrie, and I did a double take. It was the same guy whose song I quite liked a few months back! He performed Oh Cecilia (Breaking My Heart) and I really enjoyed it. Ryan of course went on to come sixth in the contest after becoming one of Nicole Scherzinger's "Scherzyboys", and is now writing new material. After the audition, I revisited If Only, and it started a new lease of life. The next week, it re-entered my chart at a brand new peak of #1, and it's still in my top 40 now having had three stints in the top 10. I also decided to sent it to BJSC around that point, and it qualified for the final, doing way better than pretty much anyone expected, myself included! I think a lot of people were quite surprised by how different this sounds compared to other artists who he may be compared to, like Justin Bieber, One Direction and Shawn Mendes (all of whom are fab of course but Ryan's his own artist). It's a shame he never got the chance to sing more appropriate songs on the show, half of what he performed were songs he'd never release given the chance, so it didn't really showcase him as a viable artist, despite being one of the most marketable finalists last year. Nevertheless, If Only shows a lot of promise for Ryan, and I've got so many good memories attached to it now thanks to his stint on The X Factor, plus having the opportunity to meet him and talk to him at his gig during the live shows. I'm really hoping it's not long until we get some new material from Ryan, whether he's signed or not I'm quite confident he'll be releasing new music before long! Ryan Lawrie 2016 __4 If Only 26ZYIkHCvZ8
January 17, 20178 yr Author Songs http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx240/MarthaJonesFan/Cover%20Sleeves/Joel%20Adams%20-%20Please%20Dont%20Go.png 3 Joel Adams - Please Don't Go - 28-21-7-4-3-3-3-7-7-11-16-22-29-34-33-34-36-40-1-1-5-8-11-15-17-22-24-28-29-28-33-36-40-X (33 weeks) Into the top 3 now, and we meet the song with perhaps the weirdest chart run of the year. I discovered Please Don't Go at the very end of 2015, it was up as a free download on Bandcamp so I made use of that and nabbed it for my iPod. It spent a couple of weeks in my top 30 at the start of 2016, before it leapt up into my top 3 weeks later, and I sent the song to BJSC. Unfortunately it didn't quality (still a tragedy tbh) and it fell away down my chart, albeit with a pretty amazing run for a track that didn't hit my top spot, and it's the highest of all of my entries this year! Please Don't Go later started to make waves on Spotify. I'd seen it dipping in and out of the iTunes top 200 for some reason at the very start of the year but nothing came of that, but now it was featured on some big Spotify playlists and on the verge of the Spotify top 50 in the UK - all of this with no airplay! :o Joel later broke the Spotify top 50 and hung around there for months, peaking at #50 in the UK chart and is now silver-certified. It's the highest charting BJSC entry of mine on the UK chart, and only the second to make the top 100 after Lauren Aquilina's Sinners (and even then that only charted due to being an EP). It was hugely exciting to follow and I felt quite proud seeing it climb the chart, and to think, if it actually got some airplay, it could've been a huge top 40 hit! Back to the song, Please Don't Go opens with Joel humming, a hook that's repeated throughout the song, and it works really well as part of the charm of the song I think. His vocals are strong and I like the lyrics too. It's not hard to see why the UK public clicked with it so much via Spotify playlists, it's the kinda thing they'd normally lap up for sure. I ended up seeing Joel live in April, he was playing a show in London for the first time and I thought I may as well get a ticket to see if the rest of his material was strong. I was very impressed by the quality of the tracks, loads of songs that could be hits if they get pushed I think. Of course the show finished with Please Don't Go and it went down a treat in the fairly small crowd. I met Joel afterwards and he was really nice, got this great picture with him! The gig had a huge impact on Please Don't Go, and it catapulted a record breaking 39 places up my chart from #40 to a new peak of #1, where it stayed for 2 weeks.  It's taken Joel over a year to actually follow this up, only releasing new single Die For You a few days ago, meaning he can be quite an annoying artist to follow at times :') he's had "over 14" record label offers since Please Don't Go took off but he's turned them all down, and his songs are not being sent to radio which mean they don't have much of a chance of being a hit beyond the streaming playlists. However, the music is great and that's the main focus I guess! Joel's finished his album and I'm really hoping that we get to hear it this year. Joel Adams 2016 __3 Please Don't Go S2oxFIsENgM

Just missing out is Shawn Mendes, with his breakthrough smash hit Stitches. A large chunk of Stitches' run above did actually take place in the eligibility period for 2016 (despite first charting in the summer of the year before), starting from the week it was at #39, just five weeks before it finally reached the top spot. I was really liking it throughout 2015 and it was a highlight on the album, but it struggled at first, only peaking at #15 which was underwhelming at first after Something Big got to #5. It came back for a second wind later and made it all the way up to #3, giving Shawn a new personal best as a lead artist, but it dropped back down. Finally though, its UK success gave it a much needed kick and finally, it catapulted right back up the chart to spend three weeks at #1 at the very start of 2016, matching the peak of his Vamps collaboration Oh Cecilia (Breaking My Heart). Stitches really defined the start of 2016 for me. As an avid chart follower, I love watching songs I'm a fan of climb up the chart, and Stitches was possibly the most exciting one to follow last year. It had been hanging around for a while before it cracked the top 40 a couple of weeks before the end of 2015, so it was a long-time coming for it to climb in. Seeing it go top 10 was even better, although at this point I still didn't consider that it might have a chance at #1, but it proved me wrong and climbed to #1 just two weeks later. It was even more exciting considering I'd known Shawn for almost 2 years at that point, so his breakthrough was long overdue and it really couldn't have happened to a better song. The song just hits all the right spots for me really. I've always loved Shawn's unique tone, and it really gets a chance to shine on Stitches with a very catchy chorus - it's not hard to see why it's done so well based on that. The only criticism I have really is that Shawn doesn't have enough songs along these lines. Treat You Better is obviously not a million miles away from this, but otherwise, he has way more acoustic guitar type ballads on his albums (which he's still great at regardless). Nevertheless, it's by far and away the best UK #1 of last year, and best chart hit full stop actually as my #1 never made it higher than #61! Shawn actually made my EOY with Stitches last year at #22, as you can see in his EOY history below, and generally I won't allow a song into two EOYs but it's probably safe to say that Stitches has been a significant enough hit in 2016 to allow it in again! It really was one of the defining songs of last year for me, and seeing Shawn blossom into one of the biggest names in pop right now was excellent. Hearing the song live a couple of times last year made it even better, and it's cemented it as a song that will be among my all-time favourites before long I'm sure. Shawn Mendes 2014 __9 Oh Cecilia (Breaking My Heart) [The Vamps feat. Frans Jeppsson-Wall was one of the most notable newcomers of 2016 for me, although technically he wasn't a newcomer having released some football-related tracks as a kid that did pretty well in his home country of Sweden. This track comes several years after those though, and it's a totally new image for Frans, who's now making a go of things in the teen pop market. Frans entered Melodifestivalen last year with his song If I Were Sorry, and I don't think anyone expected just how much of a massive success it would end up being, not until the "genrep" poll from the rehearsals of his heat where he absolutely trounced the previous favourite Molly Sandén (who is also great). Frans got 52% in the poll in first place, while Molly was second with only 14%! At this point, he was seen as a huge contender, despite the odds projected a last place finish in the heat before this. He soared through to the final and of course won, securing a spot in the Eurovision grand final. That actually makes this the highest a Eurovision song has ever been in my EOY! The previous highest was #16, achieved by Loreen with Euphoria in 2012. It also marks the fifth year out of five that I've had an artist as my EOY #1 who has never been at the top before. If I Were Sorry is a really quirky little track. It wasn't love at first listen for me, I was more fixated on how odd his accent was, but once you get used to that, the song really begins to shine. The production is chilled out, and while Frans may not have the strongest voice ever, his tone is just perfect for the track, and if it didn't have the Eurovision tag associated with it, it would've been a big hit in the UK I think. The performance at Eurovision/Melodifestivalen was a big part of the track too, it's simplistic a bit like the production but I think it goes to show that less is more, and the song most definitely carries itself. In my chart, If I Were Sorry debuted at #2 behind Fifth Harmony's Work from Home, but overtook the week after and spent 4 consecutive weeks at the top, blocking tracks like Meghan Trainor's NO and Benjamin's Body from the top spot, before being dethroned by The Vamps' I Found a Girl. It did however bounce right back up to the top for a single week after Eurovision. The track went on to spend a huge 17 weeks in my top 10, the most of any song in 2016, and 29 consecutive weeks in my top 40. The song undoubtedly defined my year, and while not everyone may be a fan of If I Were Sorry, I'm firmly in team love, and following its journey to Eurovision was so much fun - in fact it's led to me deciding to watch Melodifestivalen in full this year for the first time! The song may not have had an emotional impact on me like many songs high up in my EOY in years gone by, but it really was a runaway winner and I think many would agree that it's the song I've talked about most this past year. Frans has become one of the most exciting artists around and I'm excited for his next release, which is expected pretty soon actually. Frans 2016 __1 If I Were Sorry 2016 _33 Young Like Us 4emC0VDQGz8

January 17, 20178 yr Author And that's it! Thank you to everyone for commenting and reading throughout, I'll continue to reply to any further comments of course. I always love doing this each year so roll on 2017's EOY! (not really  but it will be here before we know it :drama:)
January 17, 20178 yr well at least Shawn Mendes isn't #1 :heehee:Â I enjoyed the Frans track a fair bit, was one of my faves of the Eurovision season last year so can't complain with that.
January 17, 20178 yr Hiya http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/uploads/group_images/of_18_icon.gif! Firstly, congrats on your very successful thread. *_* Your EOY #1 is my EOY #292   SHAWN MENDES Sian Monden *.* Possibly my favourite new artist of the year (well, I knew him a bit towards the end of 2015 but he smashed in 2016 of course  ). I think I marginally prefer Treat You Better to Stitches these days. :o I have a lot of love for the Seeb remix of Stitches too. Joel Adams is pleasant and has nice blue eyes  You seem to have missed out your EOY 4th??  Fifth Harmony my huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge [/matt] favourite of your Top 5, so pleased to see it this high! A bop I'm still not tired of. Really hope the girls continue to bring the tunes & the success as a four piece. Just noticed 'Make Me...' is at #11; it missing the Top 10 does not make me moo ooh :snif: :heehee:!  ~ Fabulous to see 'Glory' as your second fave album of the year! I still remember our first play of it, what a moment! Lots of amazing albums in your Top 10 which would definitely feature high in my EOY Albums should I do a list - Ariana, All Saints, Fifth Harmony, Shawn Mendes, Little Mix & Delta. (Just pressed 'Preview Post' and oh dear at the number of smileys I've used :') ) Overall, a wonderful EOY, sorry I've not replied as much as I should have but I have kept an eye on it throughout! <3 Here's to 2017. ;o :cheer:
January 18, 20178 yr what an awful top 5, this is why you got my top vote in that award ^_^ x Nah I kid, 'Grats on this thread, been good to read through and the effort and passion is really quite something! And Cold Water and Rockabye were two mega hits I could definitely get behind and We Don't Talk Anymore was wayyy better than anything else Charlie Puth did. Magnetised was good too, and I'm not normally a fan of Tom Odell's, a shame that didn't do much. Edited January 18, 20178 yr by Chez Wombat
