Just like last year, I'm expecting the Year End Chart to come some time in the next week (maybe tomorrow?) and I'll pop that in last year's thread when duty calls.

If you're reading this, welcome to another year, or at least another week for now of my nonsense. This week's chart looks at the aftermath of Christmas week which is of course the highest sales week of the year, though perhaps thanks to streaming, one where the top of the charts was much more stable than regular. In the past we've seen songs ascend to #1 ("Trumpets") or be blocked from #1 ("Scream & Shout") thanks to this lucrative market, this year it's just more of the same. Clean Bandit notch up their 5th week at #1, which is just how much time "Rather Be" spent at #2 as it were. I have little doubt that "Rockabye" has more weeks left in it though (or just one if Ed Sheeran has a massive hit on the way). And so this makes for the unfortunate story for "Starboy" which clocks in its 11th week at #2, which is an outright record for a song that hasn't reached the top. Taylor Swift's #1 hit "Love Story" also spent the same amount of time at #2. Bruno may finally unseat "Starboy" next week thanks to consistently strong sales. Christmas festivities choose to taunt me by sending "Closer" back into the top 5, and "Can't Stop The Feeling!" back into the top 10, even though the latter is barely top 40 on streaming. It also means The Weeknd has more misfortune as "I Feel It Coming" continues to be stuck at #11, though it looks a good chance to climb next week. Australian electro duo Pnau score their first top 50 hit in 9 years with "Chameleon", UK readers might be familiar with their previous top 50 hit "Baby" which was the skeleton of Faul & Wad Ad's hit "Changes". But of course the big news of the week was the passing of George Michael, who naturally has had huge success in Australia with half a dozen #1 hits to his name. 3 of those re-enter the charts this week with "Faith" being the highest. "Last Christmas" also finds its way back into the top 50 for the first time this century. In fact the cut off and increased streaming prevalence has done Christmas music wonders, at least in the form of "All I Want For Christmas Is You", which while not getting as high as last year, charts for 4 whole weeks in the top 50 for the first time since its initial release.

On the album charts, after almost avoiding it for a second year in a row, we have succumbed to the inevitable Buble, who has now reached #1 on 5 separate stints with his "Christmas" album. This is the latest chart date that it's been at #1 since its first release year, so we could be looking at a record breaking descent next week as the next chart will cover Dec 30th to Jan 5th, a time in which I'm sure lots of people buy Christmas music. In a kobbar-esque fashion, it's unfortunate for George Michael's passing to happen on this week, as he narrowly misses the top 10 with his "Twenty Five" compilation, surely due to the high sales threshold, and perhaps could have contended for #1 on other weeks. Following in the footsteps of Frozen a few years back, the soundtrack to Moana reaches the top 50 in the first chart of the year, and perhaps we'll see it impacting the singles chart soon too. For the first 2 weeks of 2014, the only debuts on the singles chart were from the Frozen soundtrack, maybe we'll get that again?

Unsurprisingly that makes 6 weeks at #1 for Clean Bandit, and perhaps their last as Ed Sheeran seems to have the top 2 locked down for next week. It also means this will probably be "Starboy"'s 12th and last week at #2, which makes it the song with the outright record for most weeks spent at #2. At least The Weeknd has some good news in the form of "I Feel It Coming" reaching the top 10 this week, which is his 4th song to do so, and his album is back in the top 10 as well. It's also the first time in the top 10 for Spotify shills turned radio hits from Andy Grammer and Starley, while Peking Duk score a 2nd top 5 hit to date with "Stranger".

The album chart returns to normal business with Christmas stuff out of the way, which means that having spawned the ultimate troll song of 2016 is not enough and now the "TROLLS" soundtrack has occupied the top spot. As we also have the soundtracks for "Moana" and "Sing" jumping into the top 10 alongside "Suicide Squad" remaining there, we have a new record with 4 soundtrack albums in the top 10 at once. It is also worth mentioning that last week's #1 "Christmas" got there only narrowly on the back of a few days of Christmas hype, but now with this tracking chart starting at December 30th, it now drops to #85 and earns the dubious honour of the biggest #1 drop on either ARIA Chart ever.

Can't Stop The Feeling still as high as #11?!? :drama: Glad I no longer live in Australia, couldn't deal with that

At least Clean Bandit are slaying.

You want more chart records? You got it. As you probably could have expected, Ed Sheeran debuts not just at #1 but at #2 with pretty much no competition. This is the first time an artist has ever debuted at #1 and #2 on the singles chart. This means that not only is Clean Bandit's #1 run over, but The Weeknd's #2 run is over. Somehow, Andy Grammer scores a top 5 hit and Train score a top 10 hit this week. Thanks to a big decline of digital sales, "Closer" is out of the top 10 for the first time ever, ending its top 10 run at 23 weeks, which is one less than The Prodigy's ARIA Chart record of 24 weeks with "Breathe". Also this is a particularly busy week with 9 songs entering the top 50 for the first time. I will highlight Amy Shark's "Adore", which is primed for a very strong finish in triple j's Hottest 100 countdown a week and a half from now and may be top 10 bound, and it's also worth noting that Auli'i Cravalho's version of "How Far I'll Go" slightly edges Alessia Cara's inferior version despite Spotify's best efforts.

We now have an all soundtrack top 3 which is a chart first, and a big return to the top 10 for Ed Sheeran off the back of his new music. We're slowly getting back into the swing of things for new entries, Dropkick Murphys getting the highest one at #15. Things will likely step up next week as The xx challenge for #1 with their 3rd album. They came close to #1 in 2012 but were blocked by The Amity Affliction.

Does anyone know where you can find exactly how many sales the Australian top 40 have each week?

Though not *quite* to the extent of the UK, Australia also finds itself in the situation of Ed Sheeran easily holding the top two spots on the chart this week, once again doing so on sales & streaming with no available competition. In fact the top 5 is completely unchanged this week with the action a little lower down. The Chainsmokers debut at #6 with "Paris" which just so happens to be their 6th top 10 hit. The real surprise story comes from Pnau whose single "Chameleon" has now cracked the top 10, the first for them in their nearly 2 decade career. Interestingly enough, this means that it matches the peak of "Walking On A Dream" by Empire of the Sun, which is of course a side project of Pnau's Nick Littlemore. There's a good chance they'll get even higher though with strong sales and streaming, and of course, on Thursday radio station triple j will be counting down the Hottest 100 which is prone to big chart boosts, and Pnau will likely feature strongly there. The main ones to watch though are Amy Shark and Childish Gambino, both lingering in the 40s currently but primed for big movement. Also in the top 50 this week, Alessia Cara's version of "How Far I'll Go" essentially replaces Auli'i's, and Migos's current US #1 single "Bad and Boujee" becomes the first top 50 for them and Lil Uzi Vert. It is also very noteworthy to say that "Uptown Funk" has dropped out of the top 100 this week, ending its 113 week run that started on the very week that streaming was introduced to the chart.

We have our first #1 debut of the year on the album chart, with The xx's 3rd album "I See You" becoming their first #1, after "Coexist" peaked at #2. The top 10 continues to be littered with soundtracks and now "La La Land" joins that fold. Also debuting highly this week is the Australian country pop group The McClymonts, who score their 4th top 10 album, having gotten as high as #2 back in 2010. Lower down the chart we have the first chart impact for two international acts, with UK producer Bonobo's 6th album riding high at #12, and despite giving it away for free (just like their last 2), US duo Run The Jewels debut in the top 40 with their excellent new album. Australian country continues to be in favour as Kasey Chambers will be vying as next week's highest debut.

That's pretty weird, it was big in so many places

Omg at Train going top 10 (a week ago) *.*

Great to see 'Cocoon' finally taking off somewhere too!

Great to see Pnau doing so well! It's up to #7 in the latest chart. Also The Chainsmokers up to #4 :D

I see Ed Sheeran has similar dominance in Australia as in the UK, with him still doing the 1-2.

The top of the chart stays pretty steady this week, Ed Sheeran has the top two held down for a 3rd week, and Clean Bandit aren't budging either, meaning they'd have a 9 week #1 if not for Ed. The Chainsmokers get their 5th top 5 hit with "Paris" up to #4, and Pnau continue to climb with "Chameleon", now #7 and higher than their half-counterpart Empire Of The Sun ever got. The big relevant music event of the week was triple j's Hottest 100, but that was on Thursday, with Flume being crowned #1 mere hours before the chart cut off, so "Never Be Like You" has a relatively minor jump this week below the top 50, expect him to bolt back up next week. The runner up Amy Shark however already had a boost on the way, so "Adore" has a big climb up to #13, and is challenging for possibly even a #3 position on the chart next week. With a #5 finish, Childish Gambino gets his first ever top 40 single with "Redbone". Meanwhile, news came today that X Factor Australia has been cancelled, but thanks to the magic of Spotify forced playlist BS, last year's winner Isaiah is back in the top 100 with his single that is probably selling 100 copies a week at this stage.

On the album chart we have another new #1, and it's an Australian one. Country singer Kasey Chambers picks up her 5th #1, and first since 2008 with her latest album "Dragonfly". If you want to call Keith Urban's new album 'country music', then there are 3 Australian country music albums in the top 10 currently, coinciding with the Tamworth Country Music Festival. AFI's new self-titled album can't quite hit the top 10 like its predecessor which reached #10 in late 2013. They reached their highest position with "decemberunderground" hitting #3 in 2006. Next week perhaps look out for Trolls returning to #1 with a lack of new competition.

Still not a whole lot happening at the top of the chart. Ed Sheeran was briefly challenged on the iTunes front, but as I speak he's got the top 2 locked down on sales and streaming currently so expect more of the same next week. Otherwise this week, the triple j Hottest 100 is in full effect, with plenty of high placing songs benefitting strongly on this week's chart. Runner up "Adore" has bolted to #3 as the biggest beneficiary, partly because the actual winner has been inescapable for a full year already, so Flume *only* re-enters the top 20. Milky Chance finished at #12 in the Hottest 100 but are able to nab their second top 10 hit with "Cocoon" at #10, solidifying Australia as perhaps their biggest market. #11 finishers Pnau also move up to #4 with "Chameleon". There's also a new top 50 entry for Tash Sultana who finished at #3 with "Jungle". Outside of that, Major Lazer pick up a new top 30 hit with "Run Up", which is the first time PARTYNEXTDOOR has made the Australian singles chart. "Scared To Be Lonely" is the 3rd top 50 hit for both Martin Garrix and Dua Lipa, and "All Time Low" is Jon Bellion's first top 50 hit.

There's not much happening in terms of new albums, so Trolls returns to #1 without impressive sales. Train can take advantage of the situation to get their highest charting album since "Drops Of Jupiter" climbed to #3, with "a girl a bottle a boat", which is their highest ever debut at #5. Not to be confused with Brian Johnson of AC/DC fame, Brian & Jenn Johnson have their first chart impact with a top 10 debut. Thanks again to the Hottest 100, Tash Sultana's EP soars up the charts to a new peak of #8. Speaking of new peaks, The Avalanches' classic debut album "Since I Left You" had a vinyl release last week and now reaches a new chart peak of #15, over 16 years after its release. Big debuts for next week will be from Pete Tong, Big Sean & Dune Rats.

What's even more interesting is that three of this week's Top 5 albums are soundtracks from animation films!!! Looking at the sales numbers though, the entire Top 11 looks pretty abysmal. #10 is 1010 sales and #11 managed 920 sales! How many did #40 sell that week? :o :o #7 and #8 only had 2 sales difference!!!

Amazing how much of an effect the Triple J countdown has on the chart :o

If only Flume could have some UK success, 'Never Be Like You' was such a missed opportunity :(

Great to see Pnau and Milky Chance top 10 too, would love those two to cross over but I doubt it.

You wanted another Ed Sheeran top two? You got it. 5 weeks running now, and it's looking like a 6th is in order, though ZAYN is starting to make a challenge to the #2 slot. Having co-written top 10 hits in the past for Selena Gomez, Justin Bieber and err Nico & Vinz, Julia Michaels has a top 10 of her own this week with "Issues" up to #7. This week also has Imagine Dragons returning to the top 50, charting "Believer" slightly higher than anything from their 2nd album did. Sia continues to flood the top 50 with random singles as "Never Give Up" climbs in this week, and if that's not enough, we'll next week be getting "Helium" from the 50 Shades soundtrack, as well as Katy Perry's new song she co-wrote. I'm still waiting on Spotify to update to get a better picture, but "Chained To The Rhythm" looks to debut at #4 next week.

The album chart continues to bring in new #1s, this week it's a bit of an oddity as local stoners band Dune Rats take the top spot with their 2nd album. Their debut album narrowly missed the top 20 back in 2014, but this new one comes off the back of big triple j Hottest 100 hits "Bullshit" and "Scott Green", and takes advantage of a slow week to get the top spot. The only other debut in the top 10 comes from another local band, though on the heavier spectrum with Ocean Grove's debut album at #5. Big Sean's newest album is also his highest charting to date, halving the #28 peak of "Dark Sky Paradise". Last year's 50 Shades soundtrack spent a while at #1, so you can bet the new one will make a strong challenge for #1 next week, maybe Rag'n'Bone Man will also get in the top 10.

There's not much happening this week so there's not much to say. Ed Sheeran narrowly holds off ZAYN to keep the top two held down for a 6th straight week. With "I Don't Want To Live Forever" slowing down this week it might no longer be able to threaten him, so his biggest competition will come from himself. His latest track "How Do You Feel (Paean)" quickly got to #1 on iTunes (currently #2) but its streaming is really holding it back, so it might debut at #3 keeping "Castle On The Hill" at #2. That's if it charts mind you, because this week we've got a lot of missing stuff on the chart for whatever reason. The big thing to notice is the lack of stuff from the new 50 Shades soundtrack, 2 tracks of which reached the digital tracks chart but are conspicuously missing from the chart. Pretty much the only news of note this week is Katy Perry's new single which debuts at #4 as I predicted. This continues to make Australia that weird place that for some reason had "Rise" debut at #1. It's not doing too badly for next week though it'll need a boost somewhere to reverse its fortunes as it looks to drop back a few spots.

Album chart naturally has the new 50 Shades soundtrack debuting at #1, the previous one was sitting comfortably at #1 about 2 years ago. It prevents Aussie hip hop group Thundamentals from scoring their first #1, though they make their closest attempt yet with their new album in at #2. Both stand ahead of the record breaking UK #1 from Ragin' Binman, whose "Human" hasn't quite caught on here in the same way. Australian country veteran Adam Brand has had some solid top 10 success this decade, though lately dipping slightly lower each time. He continues the slight descent as his latest album debuts at #7, with his best peak to date being #4. The Grammys are also in effect here, with Adele & Beyonce getting the most noticeable rebounds. Next week looks to be light on big debuts, so expect no change at the top.

It's pretty crazy that The Chainsmoker Closer was now certified 9 times platinum, (not to mention Uptown Funk was certified 13 times platinum so far) and thus I think the ARIA current certification threshold for singles (Gold - 35K, Platinum - 70K) was way too low for now especially with streaming market still growing up exponentially and streaming play was counted on singles accreditation.

Do y'all have idea on how the suitable certification threshold for singles should be? Mine would be something like 70K-75K for Gold, and 140-150K for Platinum certification.
