Now 23 Review

Andrew's ReviewNow That's What I Call Music! 23 aka Now 23 set a new record for it's time containing a total of 39 tracks which is the most ever included on any 2 Disc compilation. Of the chosen 39, only 3 were UK #1s.

Now 23 was the third and final release from 1992, and wrapped the year off with a wide selection of artists from the likes of Bob Marley And The Wailers, George Michael, Brian May , The Shamen and Enya to name a minority.

The only 2 UK #1s missing from this release were Snap – Rhythm Is A Dancer and Boyz II Men – End Of The Road. They were also the only #1s missing from the entire year as both Now 21 & Now 22 completed the #1 list.

Many introductions were made with Now 23, many of them were UK debuts, and such artists included were Tasmin Archer, Jon Secada, Go West, Arrested Development, East 17 and Sophie B Hawkins.

There were of course artists who would only stick around for this one occasion, and this time it was to be Charles And Eddie, Was (Not Was), Erma Frankiln, John Lee Hooker, Billy Ray Cyrus, Little Angels, Rage, The Farm, Undercover, Dr. Spin, Ambassadors Of Funk feat. MC Mario, Abba and Bjorn Again.

A bold front cover was presented to us this time, repeating the same design since Now 20 a year ago. No real theme to define the cover for Now 23, but it certainly makes a great 3D piece of art.

I found Now 23 to be quite a good listen, and it was certainly nice to have more of a variety with the tracks increased, and to hear debuts from familiar artists like East 17. It is a shame that the compilation couldn't be completed with all the #1s from 1992, I think that's my only dissapointment especially when you consider how Snap – Rhythm Is A Dancer is so widely recognized today by dance fans worldwide.

Artwork Rating: 4/10 Very Poor

Just a bit bland, very little colour and no real theme either. Certainly not the mot memorable artwork and by today's standards it would probably be seen as awful.

Disc 1 Favourite: Charles & Eddie – Would I Lie To You

No real strong contenders for this disc, but I've given it to duo Charles & Eddie for recording this song that many years later would inspire DJ's John Gibbons and also David Guetta to cover.

Disc 2 Favourite: The Shamen – Ebenezer Goode

"A great philosopher once wrote" a controversial song with a drug themed subliminal message which would make #1 on the UK charts. It's no real surprise then that this is my favourite song on this disc.

Overall Rating: 4/10 Very Poor

Not too much to be said for this volume from 1992. It's ok in places, but there are some songs that aren't up to the standards expected today. Disappointed that Boyz II Men's biggest UK hit was excluded too.

Andrew's Best 5 (as of January 2017)

1. The Shamen – Ebenezer Goode

2. Rage – Run To You

3. Freddie Mercury & Montserrat Caballë – Barcelona

The best ones on there for me are:

Too Much Love Will Kill You - Brian May

Jesus He Knows Me - Genesis

Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover - Sophie B Hawkins

Digging In The Dirt - Peter Gabriel

Barcelona - Freddie Mercury & Montserrat Caballe

I also like Alive And Kicking by Simple Minds but that's from 1985. I'm assuming it was re-released as it was used by Sky Sports for their Premier League live matches which started in 1992.
