Feeder, Milburn, Embrace and other decent acts like them.

for acts that should have reached #1 but were kept off the top by chart rules / urban legends / unfortunate circumstances etc...

Sex Pistols (Jubilee year)

Deee-lite (Steve Miller)

Dario G (Diana)

Toni Braxton (Dunblane - although the Spice Girls put their song back by a week for the Dunblane song)

Stranglers (a change in chart week)

Interesting selection there! However, I believe that the main reason that Stranglers didn't reach #1 was due to the fact that The Jam released their single on 2 formats whereas The Stranglers only had 1 format.

As for Toni Braxton, I didn't think that there was anything suspicious about Dunblane reaching #1 (even though its chart run and the fact that the song is hardly remembered might suggest otherwise).

And I agree that Elton John should not have kept Dario G off #1 (obviously the chart compilers felt that people would lose faith in the chart if Elton was DQ'd) - and in fact you could also as Sash! to your list as Elton kept Stay off #1.

Also worthy of a mention are those artists who were retrospectively denied a #1 due to Guinness preferring to use the less popular Record Retailer chart as opposed to the NME chart for the '60s.

Finally, I believe D12's Purple Pills outsold Robbie Williams in its first week, but was denied the #1 spot as half of its sales were ineligible.

The Killers should have got at least 2 no.1s by now 'Somebody Told Me' and 'When You Were Young'.

I also think Coldplay are due a no.1 big time

sash as you mention him deserved a number 1 he had 3 number 2s in a row if i remember correctly

.... so did s club juniors!

Delta Goodrem

Sash

N-Trance

Texas

All deserve No.1's

But the song that I was most annoyed about not getting to No.1 is DJ Jurgen and Alice Deejay's Better Off Alone which was kept at No.2 for 3 consecutive weeks by different acts at No.1 who all sold less in total...It was a real pain...

I feel sorry for any song that spends 3 or more weeks at No.2 really...

Sash!

Alice Deejay (Better Off Alone)

Janet Jackson

Threads like these are pointless. People only name their favourite artists...

Not necessarily

I can admit to being a big coldplay fan back in the day, but i'm less keen on them now. They wouldn't even register on my 'Favourite Artists' list atm. I just think that they've produced some quality songs (Yellow, Speed Of Sound, Clocks, The Scientist and Fix You). The one i'm most annoyed about is Speed Of Sound. It just goes to show how stupid the british public are

Not all people do, no. But when you see things like Milburn, Jamelia and Delta Goodrem they're really no more deserving than anyone who has had a number one.

Very true, although Jamelia's had her fair share of top 5 singles hasn't she? I know she came close to no.1 with 'Superstar' back in 04

And that's not even her highest charting single! That was 'Thank You' which made number 2 in 2004, stopped by Peter Andre.

That's a case in point actually. All getting to number one means is that single sold the most copies in that particular week. Some weeks you don't have to sell much to be number one, some weeks you have to sell loads. It doesn't, and never has, meant that the song is great because it gets to number one. Some songs are remembered as classics that didn't do well in the charts (e.g James Brown- 'Papa's Got A Brand New Bag' never got higher than #25) and quite a few number ones have been forgotten.

Plus, often even if an artist gets to number one they may be remembered for another hit that charted lower.
