Tikka That as lads celebrate

Paper boys ... Victoria shows band story calling on them to exterminate Westlife from the charts

TAKE THAT are planning a slap-up curry feast in their home town of Manchester to mark their first No1 in ten years.

The lads — GARY BARLOW, JASON ORANGE, HOWARD DONALD and MARK OWEN — took top spot on Sunday with comeback single Patience.

But like typical blokes, they were more preoccupied with the thought of poppadoms and spicy food than their chart triumph.

Jason joked: “It’s curry night tonight.

“Howard is the only real man of the band. You just have to look at him. He has a beard so he is a jalfrezi kind of a guy. Mark is more of a korma man.â€

I joined the manband on their UK charm offensive yesterday.

They were doing a signing in HMV on London’s Oxford Street before flying on to Manchester for another appearance. And the hysteria in both cities was just as wild as during their heyday — with some fans queueing for more than 48 hours.

The serious business of a huge album chart battle is also hotting up.

Take That are in competition with housewives’ favourites WESTLIFE and IL DIVO for the No1 spot this weekend.

But the lads’ new album is going to be enormous. More than 500,000 copies have already been shipped and the stores are asking for more.

I showed the lads yesterday’s edition of Bizarre in which I called on them to exterminate PESTLIFE from the top of this week’s chart.

Gary told me: “We will do our best to knock Westlife off No1 but it’s a tough job.

“They have sold so many albums it’s quite unbelievable.

“I don’t know who is buying it but we will do what we can to make ours No1.â€

Howard really cracked up on seeing the page and said: “Pestlife — I love it. Take That to the rescue? We’ll do what we can.â€

Mark added: “We are dead chuffed to have a No1 again.†He added: “It will be tough to beat Il Divo. Gary has told his mum not to buy their album for a week to give us a chance of the No1.â€

Above you can see me joining the lads on their chartered private jet to fly north to their second signing of the day.

Mark added: “I feel like I’m in the England football team going to the World Cup getting on the plane. You will have to be our WAG for the day.â€

Mark was handing out newspapers and serving coffee in his best efforts as an air steward.

And Gary made an announcement on the Tannoy to tell his select group of passengers that we should expect heavy winds.

That’ll be the curry, then.

Mid week sales figures have TT's album on 48k for yesterday which is only 4k ahead of Oasis who remain #2. Westlife have slipped (thankfully) :D

I'm saying nothing. Scotty knows my thoughts. -_-

You can listen to the new song http://multimedia.terra.es/viewer/portada....8&mapnivel1=OCI

I like this song and it is a million times better than Westlife

However must Gary always want all the glory. I thought they were supossed to all be very involved this time. Not in a million years would you think that was a song by a band :(

It's all to James Blunt, James Morrison for me and playing it safe by just doing what's selling at the moment -_-

thank i hope the songs are good :)

Take That's return to fame has been an emotional ride for the foursome, and it seems that it's proving to be particularly so for Jason Orange.

In the band's glory days in the 1990s Gary Barlow was the lead singer on the vast majority of songs with the odd helping hand from Mark Owen and Robbie Williams – with Jason Orange and Howard Donald seeming to provide some eye candy and sharp dance moves.

But in the comeback album Beautiful World, all four of the returning bandmates display their singing abilities and Orange's Wooden Boat is arguably one of the best tracks on the album.

According to the Sun, Orange broke down after hearing the track played for the first time as he was so proud of his efforts.

Fans who attended one of the group's sold-out gigs this summer will not be surprised at the news of emotions running high however, as the boys made no secret of their joy at being back in the limelight and frequently dropped to their knees to say thank you.

Take That are back for good...just ask their loyal fans

Last updated at 23:17pm on 27th November 2006

Ten years is a long time to wait for your idols. When the decade has taken you from teenybopper to married mother, the test of dedication could be seen as supreme.

But to 350 fans who slept in the street to welcome back Take That, there was never a question over where to place their loyalties.

Keeping warm with the help of sleeping bags, woolly hats and cherished memories of swooning to Relight My Fire and Back For Good, they queued in two cities for a full 30 hours ahead of the band's appearances at the HMV store in Oxford Street, London, and later at the branch in Piccadilly, Manchester.

Thousands more joined the diehards later to cram into both stores, where Gary Barlow, Jason Orange, Howard Donald and Mark Owen were signing copies of their new album and, as it turned out, celebrating the elevation of their single Patience to the Number 1 slot. It is their first hit since How Deep Is Your Love reached Number 1 in March 1996, three weeks after they announced their split.

And if those song titles were meant to be significant, for those asleep in the damp chill of London and Manchester there need have been no questions about patience or depth of love. First into the London store were 18-year-old Jasmine Johnson and her sister, Lisa, 26, who had been queuing since 6am on Sunday.

Their efforts were rewarded when the band presented them with two huge bouquets of flowers and kisses all round. 'It was a dream come true,' said Jasmine. 'It was pretty cold and the night time was quite bad. We slept on crushed cardboard boxes lined with binbags, and had thick sleeping bags and blankets.

'But when Take That gave us the flowers it made it all worthwhile. We got a kiss from them and our photos taken with them - it was just amazing.'

They said the experience had made them determined to follow their heroes to all their future gigs, despite the absence of one member, a certain Robbie Williams.

Take That took the world of pop music by storm between 1992 and their split in 1996, becoming the biggest-selling UK act since the Beatles with more than 25million record sales.

The four band members, minus Williams, revealed they were reforming at the end of last year and their Ultimate Tour sold out within minutes of tickets going on sale.

The new album, Beautiful World, released yesterday, is also tipped to reach Number 1.

Take That: Beautiful World

Monday, 27 Nov 2006 17:33

In a nutshell…

Energetic. Fun. Cliched. Power ballads.

What's it all about?

After more than ten years in the pop wilderness, the once fab five are back as a more mature, grown-up foursome. It may be easy to forget how successful the boys once were, but cast your mind back to when they broke up and the thousands of calls helplines took from distraught fans – both male and female – and then fast forward to the sell-out comeback tour this summer and you should have a small idea why there has been such a buzz of excitement about this album.

Beautiful World is made up of 11 tracks – all partly written by Take That. Unlike the majority of songs in the Take That of old, the refreshed group now sees all four band members (Gary Barlow, Howard Donaled, Jason Orange and Mark Owen) singing the lead vocals on at least one track of the album.

Who's it by

Well, just in case you've been on a different planet or you were born after 1995, Take That were one of the first and most successful boy bands. Fresh on the heels of New Kids on the Block in the States and before the indie Blur/Oasis phase kicked off, Take That were the first all-singing, all-dancing male group in the UK since the Beatles.

Some of their major hits (they had eight number one hits in the 1990s) include Pray, Relight My Fire, Babe, Back For Good and Never Forget – to name just a few. Post break-up the boys went their separate ways. Robbie Williams went on to achieve international success while the others eventually faded into relative obscurity. Until now.

As an example…

"I'll try to be strong. Believe me,

I'm trying to move on,

It's complicated but understand me.

"Cause I need time,

My heart is numb has no feeling,

So while I'm still healing,

Just try and have a little patience." - Patience

Likelihood of a trip to the Grammys

Beautiful World is likely to be as successful as the group's first single – heading straight to the top of the charts. But the involvement of Grammy award-winning producer John Shanks is likely to ensure that the album achieves some critical success as well as mass popularity.

What the others say

"Luckily, Beautiful World is very good. Its mild-mannered adult rock is slicker than a tub of Brylcreem, but not so cloying as to make you want to wash your hands after listening to it. There isn't a single shoddy or cynical moment on here. It's almost like the last ten years never happened." – The Observer

"The success of Patience… suggests that Beautiful World is likely to head for the top of the album charts rapidly, possibly knocking their rivals Westlife off the top position." – The Independent

So is it any good?

No doubt thousands of Take That fans will rush out to buy Beautiful World, and it's unlikely they'll be disappointed. The overall sound of the group has changed, with less of the chirpy pop beats of Pray and It Only Takes a Minute Girl. But at heart the essence of the band remains: enjoyable, catchy and wholesome.

The album doesn't try for anything too dramatic and oozes with their obvious joy and gratitude at being back at the top of their game. Hearing Gary's voice on the majority of the tracks is a comforting reminder of times past, but having the other three as lead singers provides a refreshing change, with Jason Orange's Wooden Boat standing out particularly.

Meaty and well-written tracks reflect both their own experience and the contribution of the award-winning Shanks.

It's clear to see why Patience was chosen as the debut single – it's undoubtedly one of the catchiest and most successful tracks on the album. Other tracks which stand out include Like I Never Loved You At All and the chirpy, slightly less-traditionally Take That song Shine.

Many of the tracks take a few times of listening to before they start to really appeal, but once they do, it's likely that a few will achieve the same success of the currently number one and aptly-named single, Patience.

7.5/10

Liam is a closet Take That fan

Take That and Party Boy... our mock-up of hard living Liam as member of the band

I CAN reveal a secret LIAM GALLAGHER was hoping to take to the grave – he’s great mates with TAKE THAT’s cardy-wearing GARY BARLOW.

That’s right — Gary has spilled the beans that the snarling OASIS frontman gives him a bear-like hug whenever he bumps into him in the street.

Speaking exclusively to me on board Take That’s private jet, the cleanest man in pop revealed: “Liam is a top bloke and he’s not as big a hardman as people think.

“Whenever I see him he gives me a hug and we have a nice chat. We get on well.

“I know we’ve got completely different styles of music and all that but he’s a nice guy.â€

Words that could condemn the lairy Oasis singer to a lifetime of ridicule from older brother NOEL.

The two Madchester bands are battling it out in the album charts this week too.

Take That are leading the pack and are right on course to be No1 on Sunday with comeback album Beautiful World.

They will also hang on to the top spot in the singles charts for the second week with Patience.

In the albums, they’ve easily seen off WESTLIFE, who are likely to slip down to No4. IL DIVO are on course to go in at No3.

Oasis are still going strong with their best of album Stop The Clocks — it is destined to remain at No2.

Early midweek figures show that Take That sold 47,000 copies on Monday compared with Oasis’ 43,000.

Gary and bandmates MARK OWEN, JASON ORANGE and HOWARD DONALD kicked off their chart battle campaign in style.

On Monday hundreds of fans camped on the streets of London and Manchester to catch a glimpse of them at record store signings.

On the flight Jason told me: “I was never really into Oasis at first. When they came out, about the same time as us, I just thought they were show-off big gobs. But now I really like their music.â€

Gary’s revelation has left me fearing for Liam’s future as frontman in Oasis — there’s every chance Noel could give him his marching orders for wrecking the band’s rock ’n’ roll image.

Never mind, Liam — there’s always a role as the fifth member of Take That now that ROBBIE WILLIAMS definitely isn’t going to rejoin his old bandmates.

My technical wizards have mocked up how the line-up might look with Liam replacing Robbie alongside Gary, Jason, Howard and Mark.

I’m sure it will tickle Noel — especially as he famously labelled Rob “the fat dancer from Take That.â€

But somehow I don’t think it’s a picture Liam will be cutting out and sticking on his bedroom wall.

TOP THAT

COMEBACK KINGS SET TO SCORE DOUBLE NO.1

Eva Simpson & Caroline Hedley

IT doesn't get much better than That... They are already at No.1 in the singles chart with their brilliant Patience. And now Take That are on course for a stunning double as their new album heads for the top slot too.

As TT fever sweeps the country, midweek sales of their record Beautiful World have hit an impressive 43,000.

And the cherry on their Christmas cake is that they look set to topple Westlife from the top spot.

The Irish crooners have shifted just over 32,000 copies of their Love Album - which is going to leave them chasing Oasis and Il Divo who are in second and third place.

TT's high-flying chart success marks an amazing comeback for Gary, Mark, Jason and Howard. They received a rapturous reception from fans at two packed album signings in London and Manchester on Monday.

Mark Owen tells us: "It's like a dream. I can't believe people are still supporting us, we are just so grateful.

"It's amazing what can happen in a year. Twelve months ago I did a record signing and only 30 people showed up. Now it's thousands. This is going to be one of the best Christmases in years."

What makes their comeback even sweeter is that Beautiful World - their first new album in 10 years - is proving to be more successful than a certain ex-band member's.

Take That are set to sell nearly twice as many albums in their first week than Robbie Williams did with his Rudebox CD.

Meanwhile Jordan and Peter Andre have sold just 8,000 copies of their album of duets. That many?

I see the 3AM bitches are at it once again. This time they are so desperate for TT to sell more that they have completelly exadurated the sales.

I almost feel like e-mailing them, for heavens sake Robbie's so called 'flop' album as they labelled it which got absolutelly ZERO promo OUTSOLD TT's insanely promoted massive 10 year comeback album on it's first day

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr :arrr:

I know.

It probably will end up selling more by Sunday but it's hardly a fair comparison given we're now in the middle of the Xmas shopping frenzy.

Yes but at the moment it has'nt sold as much as Rudebox did on it's first day despite it being released at Xmas time and being promoted hugely so what are they on

They are on an Anti-Robbie vendetta. Just like all the Mirror titles (including the Daily Record that published that Alan McGhee pish across 2 full pages today :arrr: ).

Take That's Saturday night special

Ian Wylie

QUITE THE COMEBACK: Take ThatTHE combination of the words ‘take’ and ‘that’ have a strange effect on millions of women between 21 and 30 years old.

There are many more outside of this age group who react in a similar manner, but twentysomethings in particular seem prone to the symptoms of fanatical obsession with Gary Barlow, Robbie Williams, Mark Owen, Jason Orange and Howard Donald.

For this reason, An Audience with Take That: Live! (ITV1, Saturday, 9.30pm) is sure to receive huge viewing figures, with boyfriends and husbands up and down the country being sent down their local boozer to allow their other halves complete control of the TV remote.

Obviously, the line-up isn’t as complete as TT enthusiasts would like. Robbie is sadly missing, but the remaining quartet can be relied upon to make sure the star-studded audience, as well as those of us watching from the comfort of our sofas, are given a show to remember.

The premise remains the same as always. The headliners take to the stage in front of hundreds of other celebrities to perform tracks and answer a variety of questions. However, as Mark Owen points out, he and the boys are hoping to offer something unique.

“We’ll be trying to give it a slightly different feel from the other shows.

“The stage design has been changed quite a bit and obviously doing the whole thing live will add quite a different energy to it. We’re really looking forward to seeing what people think.

“We’ll be playing a mix of old and new songs. We’ll be doing the main hits, but we’re also trying to mix it with some songs from the new album and we’re really pleased that people will get a chance to hear them live.â€

No strangers

The lads are no strangers to pre-performance nerves, but this gig is sure to have the butterflies flapping at an increased rate, so support from their loved ones is essential.

“My girlfriend is going to come along with a couple of her friends,†Mark continues. “I’ll also have a few friends there and I’m trying to convince my mum and dad to come too!

“There are a lot of people we’ve had the opportunity to meet over the years or become fans of, be it from TV or music, and it would be great if some of them were there. We’ve invited a few people who’ve been good to us in the past and who’ve been an inspiration, so I guess we’ll have to wait and see if they turn up.â€

But what about the all-important questions – who would he most like to ask one?

“I’d quite like to have a question from the Queen,†he says. “It would be fab if she was in the audience. We’ll find a way to get her in even with her bad back. We’ll find a way to make her comfortable. We can get her a couple of cushions.â€

If An Audience With... doesn’t sate your appetite for the boys who brought us classics such as Pray, Could It Be Magic, Back for Good and Relight My Fire, then turn over to ITV2 straight afterwards for Take That: The Ultimate Tour.
