Andrew's ReviewNow That's What I Call Music! 28 otherwise known as Now 28 defined the Summer of 1994. With 40 tracks to fill the compilation up, it's certainly no surprise that we have such a variety of Summer grooves and dance anthems to form much of Now 28.

Now 28 was to be the final "fatbox" from the series as far as CD cases go, as modern compilations would fit in a slimline case.

The tracklisting includes Wet Wet Wet, Pretenders, Erasure, Cappella and Juliet Roberts to name just some.

Only 3 UK #1s were chosen on this occasion, which meant the absence of Take That – Everything Changes, Prince – The Most Beautiful Girl In The World and Manchester United Football Squad – Come On You Reds.

Now 28 gave us the debut from China Black as well as R. Kelly.

Now 28 also introduced us for the first time to Blur, The Prodigy and The Brand New Heavies.

There are, of course, many one hit wonders from Now 28 - a total of 17 in fact, and they are from All-4-One, BC52s, Let Loose, Marcella Detroit, Stiltskin, Toni Braxton, Dawn Penn, The Grid, Two Cowboys, Maxx, Sonic Surfers, DJ Miko, Club House feat. Carl, Tony Di Bart, C.J. Lewis, Gloworm and Absolutely Fabulous.

Personally, I really like Now 28 there's much music on here that I still enjoy to this day, and it really depicts the season of Summer at it's best, especially for the 90's era. I like how the cover is designed, it's a nice change from the previous "overused" covers. I don't really know why another non top 40 track was chosen as it just doesn't live up to the compilation's claim of "40 TOP CHART HITS."

 

Artwork Rating: 7/10 Very Good

A fresh and creative new look for the Summer which incorporates a bubble/swirl themed background. The title actually seems to be twisted somewhat with the upper text at a different angle than the lower text. This could have been a test of the graphics used at the time, but it's certainly unique to the rest of the series, and a nice cover for the Summer.

 

Disc 1 Favourite: D:Ream – U R The Best Thing

Another feel good anthem by D:Ream which another Top 5 hit for the dance outfit. The techno era of the 90's was still progressing, and D:Ream were a major act at the time.

 

Disc 2 Favourite: Tony Di Bart – The Real Thing

A smashing UK #1 hit which shares it's title with another track on the disc from 2 Unlimited. Tony Di Bart was a one hit wonder, but what a great hit this was at the time.

 

Overall Rating: 8/10 Extremely Good

I would definitely go as far as saying Now 28 was one of the best compilations of the first half of the 90's, it stands out to me as having lots of quality, and a varied mixture, perhaps most notably reggae and techno themes throughout, with occasional pop songs. It certainly leaves a lasting impression.

That second disc is just so good!

side 1 for me has all the fab tracks on it, side 2 struggled to pick one of a handful of good tracks, but no great tracks :o

My favourite track from disc 1 is easily Blur - Girls and Boys with Whatta Man by Salt N Pepa and En Vouge on Disc 2!
