Posted October 10, 200618 yr Another review, this time we have Mariah's second album. Remember I am Mr. Picky when it comes to these and these are my opinions and how these songs strike me musically. I don't really do lyrics in any depth. If you have only heard the singles off this album, feel free to post reviews of the singles. ;) Track One Emotions A real fast track, this title track, which was also the first UK single. This doesn't have an exactly appealing start in my opinion. I find this song real repetitive lyrically in the chorus. It could be better as it has a great beat. Very abrupt ending. This song is too in the face for my liking. Track Two And You Don't Remember Very slow start both musically and lyrically. I find her voice unnecessarily loud in places and it does not match the pace of the song very well in places. Chorus is repetitive lyrically. Very much a filler track. Gentle ending to this. Track Three Can't Let Go Nice slow start to this track, which was the second UK single with backing vocals. Slow chorus and excellent use of backing vocals. Very steady pace musically with subdued backing vocals. Very bland in my opinion and more filler material than single material. Track Four Make It Happen The third UK single off this album and it has a higher peak than the previous single and matches the peak of the first single, which is rather unusual. This song should have been released before Can't Let Go in my opinion. This has a catchy start which I like. The vocal matches the pace of the music and this is maintained throughout the song. The vocal is especially powerful during the chorus before the short musical bridge that is included. Unfortunately Mariah does a refrain of a line from the chorus which spoils the effect. Very good song overall. Track Five If It's Over This has an impressive intro which reminds me of some of the organ music I listen to. Very slow to start despite the intro. I love the vocals that Mariah does on the chorus. This is an impressive ballad with excellent backing vocals. Impressive ending with a gospel sound to the vocals. I see that this could have been a potential single if it had been a little faster. Track Six You're So Cold Before winter sets in, let's discuss this song. Nice piano intro with a nice build up vocally. Goes quiet and then the beat picks up and becomes catchy. Backing vocals could have been better in the chorus, impressive in the verses. Repetitive chorus, I feel that more could have been done lyrically to this. Not sure that Mariah gets the pitch of her voice right for this song. Very abrupt ending. Despite this I would rate this song higher than the first two singles. Track Seven So Blessed Very gentle start to this track and the pace of the music and the vocals match perfectly. The vocal is raised in the chorus but it is not overdone. Nice little ballad that picks up a little for the second half of the song. Gentle ending. Track Eight To Be Around You Sounds a rushed beginning and develops a catchy beat. The vocal is a bit breathless initially but is very good. Develops into a comparatively fast track with an abrupt ending which is mainly vocal. Track Nine Till The End Of Time Excellent vocal start followed by the musical intro which is nice and slow. The vocal matches the music at this point and continues to do so. Picks up during the course of the song. Nice gentle song with a nice beat at the end and a gentle repetitive ending. Track Ten The Wind Gentle start here and the vocal again matches the pace of the music. Very slow start with a very soft vocal not easily heard. Picks up a little near the end but this doesn't rank very highly for me on this album. I can understand why this is a filler track as it lives up to its name as it is very much like a wisp of the wind. Gentle ending. Conclusion The singles are all together near the beginning. As I have said elsewhere, it doesn't make me want to listen to the whole album first. I would stop at the singles. Ms. Carey has not learned to spread the singles around after the first album it would seem. One redeeming feature of this album is that there is a good mix of ballads and livelier tracks. A very good album on the whole, reflecting the different pace of life which is what the beats say to me. Feel free to post your reviews on this album or the singles if you have only heard them. ^_^
October 10, 200618 yr I've never liked Emotions. As you said, all the singles (and all the good album tracks too) are at the beginning of the set. Can't Let Go is one of Mariah's best singles in my opinion. Emotions and Make It Happen are a bit dated but they both show off Mariah's voice - the high-notes on Emotions and the powerful musical shouts in Make It Happen are thrilling. And You Don't Remember and If It's Over are serviceable enough but would probably be among the worst songs on other Mariah albums. I don't like any of the other songs. PS You're So Cold is bizarre. It sounds like a theme song to a b-movie or an Addams Family-esque TV show. Edited September 16, 200717 yr by Flatcap
October 11, 200618 yr I'll do mine soon, this album is one of my lesser listened to albums by her though. :P Edited September 16, 200717 yr by Flatcap
October 25, 200618 yr Easily one of my least favourite Mariah albums. Very few tracks I listen to. I only really listen to Can't Let Go, Emotions and Make It Happen. Edited September 16, 200717 yr by Flatcap
October 25, 200618 yr I forgot about this, expect a review in the next few days, I'm so busy at the moment. :( Edited September 16, 200717 yr by Flatcap

October 26, 200618 yr I went to town compared with that statement Kelly. :arrr: I know you did John my love, but I really think it's rubbish, I may do a proper review if I get a chance this weekend. ^_^ Edited September 16, 200717 yr by Flatcap
October 26, 200618 yr Actually I really enjoyed doing my Mariah Carey review, because it got me back into the album, let's hope I finally get into this album eh? Edited September 16, 200717 yr by Flatcap
October 26, 200618 yr Author Listening to an album and reviewing it is always interesting I find. There are some tracks where the music is related to the title, on this album it applies to The Wind.

October 27, 200618 yr Emotions - 10/10 - Well, the whistles make this song, great, love it. And You Don't Remember - 9/10 - very nice album track, something everyone can relate too. Can't Let Go - 10/10 - Fabulous, this is even better live. Make it Happen - 10/10 - I used to hate this song, but I grew to love it. If It's Over - 7/10 - Why was this a single? You're So Cold - 9/10 - I like this song, it's sooo soulful and the deep voice is great. So Blessed - 7/10 - It's ok, better than the average album song, but nothing to rage about. To Be Around You - 8/10 - This is a nice song, it has a good range and the vocals are great! Till The End Of Time - 10/10 - I like to listen to this and reflect sometimes. The Wind - 7/10 - This is very old fashioned song, I quite like it! 87/100 :cheer: Edited September 16, 200717 yr by Flatcap

October 30, 200618 yr Author I find the diversity of opinions on an album interesting, which is partly why I start these topics. Here's another example, I am surprised at how high you scored The Wind Kalen. Also I didn't think that much of Can't Let Go compared to the majority in this thread.
October 30, 200618 yr I like The Wind, it's a nice enough ballad. I love Mariah's ballads more than that R&B stuff. :P Edited September 16, 200717 yr by Flatcap
February 3, 200718 yr Author We have some new members, don't know how far back their collections go so... ;)
February 4, 200718 yr Not one of Mariah's best albums, but surely most of us have it. ^_^ Edited September 16, 200717 yr by Flatcap
