DJ Khaled's All-Star 'I'm the One' Debuts at No. 1 on Billboard Hot 100

5/8/2017 by Gary Trust

DJ Khaled's "I'm the One," featuring Justin Bieber, Quavo, Chance the Rapper and Lil Wayne, launches at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart (dated May 20). The high-profile collab, released on We the Best/Def Jam/Epic Records, is the first Hot 100 leader for Khaled (who co-produced and co-wrote it and adds vocals) and Chance the Rapper, as well as the first for Quavo, of rap act Migos, as a soloist. Bieber earns his fourth No. 1 and Lil Wayne scores his third.

The song dethrones Bruno Mars' "That's What I Like" after a week at No. 1 on the Hot 100, although it takes over atop the Radio Songs chart.

'One' in streams & sales: "One," released April 28, opens at No. 1 on the Streaming Songs chart with 53.9 million U.S. streams in the week ending May 4, according to Nielsen Music. It also arrives atop the Digital Song Sales chart with 171,000 downloads sold in the week ending May 4. On Radio Songs, "One" is the week's top debut at No. 33 with 35 million in all-format airplay audience in the week ending May 7.

Bieber earns his eighth Digital Song Sales No. 1 and third Streaming Songs No. 1, while Lil Wayne lands his third No. 1 on the sales list (and first on Streaming Songs). The other three acts on "One" rule each ranking for the first time.

Number 'One' debut: "One" is just the 28th title to debut at No. 1 on the Hot 100. It's the first since Ed Sheeran's "Shape of You" on the Jan. 28, 2017-dated chart. ("One" is the 1,064th total No. 1 in the history of the Hot 100, which began on Aug. 4, 1958.)

Meanwhile, "One" is the first rap song to debut atop the Hot 100 since Eminem's "Not Afraid," seven years ago this week (May 22, 2010).

Plus, "One" is the second song to debut atop the Hot 100 with, appropriately, the word "one" in its title: On Dec. 2, 1995, another superstar team-up, Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men's "One Sweet Day," launched at the summit. It went on to spend a record 16 weeks at No. 1. Speaking of Carey…

Bieber's second No. 1 bow: Bieber becomes just the third artist to have debuted at No. 1 on the Hot 100 with multiple titles. He first opened on top with his first leader, "What Do You Mean?" (Sept. 19, 2015). Carey leads with three No. 1 entrances ("Fantasy," "One Sweet Day," both in 1995, and "Honey," 1997), while Britney Spears, like Bieber now, has made two such starts ("3," in 2009, and "Hold It Against Me," 2011).

Bieber & Lil Wayne's latest Hot 100 leaders: Bieber and Lil Wayne are the chart-topping veterans on "One," tallying their fourth and third Hot 100 No. 1, respectively. In addition to "One" and "Mean," Bieber ruled in 2016 with "Sorry" and "Love Yourself." Lil Wayne led with "Lollipop," featuring Static Major, in 2008, and as featured on Jay Sean's "Down," in 2009.

The rest of the "One" team easily earns new Hot 100 highs. Khaled logged one prior top 10: "I'm On One," featuring Drake, Rick Ross and (oh, look) Lil Wayne, which reached No. 10 in 2011.

Quavo also collects his second top 10 (apart from Migos). Drake's "Portland," featuring Quavo and Travis Scott, debuted and peaked at No. 9 in April.

Chance the Rapper achieves not only his first Hot 100 No. 1 or top 10, but even his first top 40 hit: he'd climbed to a prior No. 41 best with his first entry, 2013's featured turn on "Confident" by… Bieber.

Bieber goes fourth: Notably, Bieber has now earned more top five Hot 100 hits after his 2015 album Purpose than he did from the set: following the LP's No. 1s "Mean," "Sorry" and "Love Yourself," he's added four top fives in featured roles, on Major Lazer's "Cold Water" (also featuring MO; No. 2); DJ Snake's "Let Me Love You" (No. 4); Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee's "Despacito" (up to No. 3 this week, see below); and now Khaled's No. 1 "One."

Five at 1 with 'One': "One" marks the first Hot 100 No. 1 by five individually credited acts. Twice before, a high of four acts had shared a leader on the list, via "Give Me Everything," by Pitbull featuring Ne-Yo, Afrojack and Nayer (2011), and "Lady Marmalade," by Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Mya and P!nk (2001).

(Ironically, the hook of the Hot 100's new five-act leader finds Bieber singing, "I'm the only one …")

Quavo & Migos: As member of Migos, Quavo spent three weeks at No. 1 on the Hot 100 beginning Jan. 21 with "Bad and Boujee," featuring Lil Uzi Vert. Now with a solo No. 1 thanks to "One," Quavo is the first artist to top the chart with a group and as a soloist in the same year since will.i.am in 2010. That year, he led with The Black Eyed Peas' "Imma Be" (two weeks, beginning March 6) and solo as featured on Usher's "OMG" (four weeks, May 15).

"One" even sports a nod to "Boujee," with Quavo reprising the song's signature "rain drop" lyric. (And, mostly unrelated, but interesting: Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown get a shoutout, too, in Lil Wayne's verse. Houston earned 11 Hot 100 No. 1s with her own songs, and Brown, two.)

Three at 1: The Hot 100 has welcomed a new No. 1 in each of the last three weeks. Mars' "That's What I Like" rose 3-1 on the May 13 chart, after Kendrick Lamar's' "Humble." made the same move on May 6. The Hot 100 hadn't seen three new No. 1s in three consecutive weeks since December 2010, when Rihanna's "Only Girl (In the World)," P!nk's "Raise Your Glass" and Katy Perry's "Firework" all logged their first weeks at No. 1 that Dec. 4, 11 and 18.

Summer Number 'One'? It's worth noting that Drake's "One Dance," featuring WizKid and Kyla, hit No. 1 on the Hot 100 a year ago this week (on the chart dated May 21, 2016), given that it went on to become the No. 1 song of the summer of 2016 (based on chart performance between Memorial Day and Labor Day). Could "I'm the One" similarly sizzle this summer? One major-market radio program director told Billboard that, in his opinion, it's the "first contender" for song of the summer this year.

That's a rap: Additionally, "One" debuts at No. 1 on both the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot Rap Songs charts. Khaled earns his second leader on each list, following "I'm on One." Lil Wayne, meanwhile, ups his count to 10 No. 1s. Bieber, Quavo and Chance the Rapper tally their first No. 1 each on the survey.

As "One" overtakes the Hot 100 in its first week, Mars' "Like" drops to No. 2 after a week on top. Still, it rises 2-1 on Radio Songs (172 million, up 4 percent), becoming Mars' seventh No. 1 on the airplay chart, tying him with Usher for the most among solo males. The two equal Perry for the third-most among all artists, after Rihanna (12) and Carey (11). "Like" leads Hot R&B Songs for a 12th week.

More Bieber: Luis Fonsi's "Despacito," featuring Bieber, hits a new Hot 100 high, lifting 4-3. It descends to No. 2 after a week atop Digital Song Sales, but gains by 16 percent to 100,000 sold (with 70 percent of its total sales from the Bieber remix). It dips 2-3 on Streaming Songs, but similarly increases by 10 percent to 48 million. On Radio Songs, the track surges 32-18 (49 million, up 30 percent), winning the Hot 100's top Airplay Gainer award. "Despacito" leads Hot Latin Songs for a 14th week.

Even more Bieber: he's the first artist to place two titles in the Hot 100's top three simultaneously since… he himself doubled up with "Love Yourself" (No. 1) and "Sorry" (No. 3) on Feb. 27, 2016.

Rounding out the Hot 100's top five, Lamar's "Humble." falls 3-4 and Sheeran's former 12-week Hot 100 No. 1 "Shape" slides 2-5.

Capping the Hot 100's top 10, The Chainsmokers and Coldplay's No. 3-peaking "Something Just Like This" holds at No. 6 (as The Chainsmokers spend a 53rd consecutive week in the top 10). On Hot Dance/Electronic Songs, "Something" logs an eighth total week at No. 1. Future's "Mask Off" drops to No. 7 from its No. 5 Hot 100 peak, followed by three songs that each stay in place: Kyle's "iSpy," featuring Lil Yachty (No. 8, after hitting No. 4); Lil Uzi Vert's "XO TOUR Llif3" (No. 9, after reaching No. 8); and Kygo and Selena Gomez's "It Ain't Me," which keeps at its No. 10 high after entering the region a week ago.
