Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee Rule Hot 100, Imagine Dragons Hit Top 10

7/3/2017 by Gary Trust

Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee's "Despacito," featuring Justin Bieber, leads the Billboard Hot 100 chart (dated July 15) for an eighth week. Meanwhile, Imagine Dragons' "Believer" surges 11-6, marking the rock band's third top 10 and first in three-and-a-half years.

"Despacito" (released on Universal Music Latino / Raymond Braun / SchoolBoy / Def Jam / UMLE / Republic Records) dominates the Digital Song Sales chart for a ninth week, with 136,000 downloads sold (down 1 percent) in the week ending June 29, according to Nielsen Music; the remix with Bieber accounts for 78 percent of the song's sales (essentially even week-over-week and in line with its 80 percent share the three weeks before that).

The track tops the Streaming Songs chart for an eighth frame, with 62.6 million U.S. streams (down 6 percent) in the week ending June 29. On Radio Songs, "Despacito" holds at No. 2 with 143 million in all-format airplay audience (up 7 percent) in the week ending July 2.

"Despacito" also rules the Hot Latin Songs chart for a 22nd week and the Songs of the Summer chart for a fifth week, having led the latter list each week since it made its annual return just after Memorial Day.

DJ Khaled's "I'm the One," featuring Bieber, Quavo, Chance the Rapper and Lil Wayne, keeps at No. 2 on the Hot 100; it debuted atop the May 20-dated chart. It leads Hot Rap Songs for a ninth week and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs for a fourth frame. Meanwhile, Khaled adds his second No. 1 on the Billboard 200, as parent album Grateful bows on top with 149,000 equivalent album units.

Thanks to "Despacito" and "I'm the One," Bieber has ranked at Nos. 1 and 2 on the Hot 100 simultaneously each of the past three weeks, marking his longest such double-up. He previously held the top two spots on Feb. 6 and 13, 2016, with "Sorry" and "Love Yourself. (Unlike with his two current hits, Bieber was the lead, and only, artist on those two songs, also both No. 1 hits.) Bieber is the first act to link three straight weeks at Nos. 1 and 2 concurrently in more than three years, since Iggy Azalea did so for five frames in June and July 2014.

The last male to achieve the feat for at least three weeks before Bieber was Pharrell Williams, for five weeks in 2013.

More on Bieber at Nos. 1 and 2 in a moment. First, Khaled continued: "Wild Thoughts," also from Grateful and featuring Rihanna and Bryson Tiller, ascends 4-3 in its second week on the Hot 100. It keeps at No. 2 on Streaming Songs (41.8 million, up 15 percent); dips 2-4 on Digital Song Sales (58,000, down 35 percent); and pushes 23-17 on Radio Songs (61 million, up 48 percent), winning the Hot 100's awards for top streaming and airplay gains. "Thoughts" also takes over atop Hot R&B Songs (2-1), marking Rihanna's fifth leader on the list and the first each for Khaled and Tiller (dating to the chart's 2012 launch).

Perhaps foretelling further chart fortunes, "Thoughts" is the first song to debut in the Hot 100's top 10 and then rise in rank in its second week since The Chainsmokers' "Closer," featuring Halsey, which arrived at No. 9 on Aug. 20, 2016, and climbed to No. 6 the following frame, on its way to a 12-week reign at No. 1. "Thoughts" is the first song to debut in the top five and lift in its second week since Eminem's "The Monster," featuring (guess who) Rihanna, which started at No. 3 on Nov. 16, 2013, and rose to No. 2 the next week, before topping the Hot 100 for four weeks.

Now, more Khaled and back to Bieber: as Bieber ranks at Nos. 1 and 2 concurrently on the Hot 100 and Khaled holds down Nos. 2 (shared with Bieber) and 3, the pair combines for a first in the history of the chart (which began on Aug. 4, 1958): Never before had two acts each claimed two spots in the top three simultaneously, an achievement this week that reflects not only the success of "I'm the One," but Bieber and Khaled's concurrent high profiles thanks also to "Despacito" and "Thoughts," respectively.

Bruno Mars' "That's What I Like" retreats 3-4 on the Hot 100; it topped the May 13-dated chart. Still, it leads Radio Songs for a ninth week (147 million, down 3 percent). Closing out the top five, Ed Sheeran's former 12-week Hot 100 No. 1 "Shape of You" remains at No. 5, while extending its record for the most weeks spent in the top five from a song's debut, having now logged its first 25 weeks on the Hot 100 in the top five, dating to its entrance at No. 1 (Jan. 28).

Imagine Dragons fire up their third Hot 100 top 10, as "Believer" bounds 11-6. The group previously reached the region with "Radioactive" (which peaked at No. 3 and set the record for the most weeks totaled on the Hot 100: 87) and "Demons" (No. 6), both in 2013. As parent album Evolve arrives at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, "Believer" charges 6-2 on Digital Song Sales (68,000, up 36 percent), good for the Hot 100's top sales gain; lifts 10-9 on Radio Songs (85 million, up 8 percent); and climbs 20-15 on Streaming Songs (17.9 million, up 15 percent).

"Believer" controls the Hot Rock Songs chart for a 17th week. It previously led the Alternative Songs airplay chart for 13 weeks, the longest No. 1 run since Imagine Dragons' own "Radioactive" also ruled for 13 weeks in 2013.

Also notably, and more than halfway through 2017, "Believer" is the first rock song (defined as a title that has hit the Hot Rock Songs chart) to reach the Hot 100's top 10 this year, out of 43 total top 10s. (A year ago at this time, four rock songs had hit the Hot 100's top 10, of 38 total top 10s; in 2015, the count was 3 rock titles of 33 top 10s in the same span.)

Rounding out the Hot 100's top 10, Kendrick Lamar's "Humble.," which crowned the May 6-dated chart, backtracks 6-7; Post Malone's first Hot 100 top 10, "Congratulations," featuring Quavo, maintains its No. 8 peak; Future's No. 5-peaking "Mask Off" drops 7-9; and The Chainsmokers and Coldplay's No. 3 hit "Something Just Like This" descends 9-10, as The Chainsmokers spend a 61st consecutive week in the Hot 100's top 10, a streak second only to Katy Perry's record 69-week run in 2010-11. The collab also tops the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart for a 14th week.
