Started yesterday so here is the thread to post any news Venice Film Festival related!

 

Films showing in competition include Downsizing, Lean On Pete, The Leisure Seeker, The Shape of Water, Suburbicon, Mother and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri so it'll be exciting to see how the reviews help shape the course of the upcoming awards season :cheer:

 

Victoria & Abdul is also showing out of competition but we don't have to wait that long to see that in cinemas anyway :D

Sally Hawkins is getting great reviews for The Shape of Water, I'm really beginning to see her as a major contender for Best Actress. Octavia Spencer is getting glowing reviews too and is apparently a great supporting character so I'd be here for her snatching her third nomination too! Other reviews calling it Del Toro's best since Pan's Labyrinth so I'm starting to think this could be big at awards season, might start predicting it in Best Picture now as well.

The following films are being screened at Venice so some of the critic reviews are coming out.

 

Here is how the metacritic scores stand for some of the potential awards contenders (some are screening at Telluride film festival too):

Downsizing - 84

The Shape of Water - 92

Suburbicon - 51

Darkest Hour - 81

A Fantastic Woman - 96

 

It seems Suburbicon is getting pretty mixed reviews so probably not likely to maintain hype long enough to get (m)any awards nominations. Looks like the Shape of Water could be a really big contender though, everyone seems to be loving it!!

Shocked at the mixed reactions from the crowd but I read somewhere it has the most divisive ending since A Clockwork Orange which is a pretty bold statement so I guess it makes sense. It stands at 86 on Metacritic so far which is really quite good, I hope this means Lawrence is going to be a big awards contender :cheer:

Also, I Tonya is getting good reviews with Margot Allison and Sebby getting raves.

So pleased that the reviews for Call Me By Your Name remain so good, very excited for that film after reading the book which I adored :wub:
