October 21, 200618 yr A veil covers the face, a cross doesn't. True but if they want to cover their faces then they should be entitled to, they should not cover face on passports or at airport security and should not apply for jobs in schools where they might cause offence but I have absolutely no objection to them wearing veils, its their religion and I believe in freedom of choice. I don't understand why everyone is so offended by veils now but were not 2 weeks ago, 2 months ago, 2 years ago, 20 years ago etc
October 21, 200618 yr They look a bit threatening. So do hoodies and any of us are far more likely to be attacked by a chav in a hoodie than we are an Islamic woman in a veil but I respect a chav's right to wear a hoodie as I believe in freedom of choice ^_^

October 21, 200618 yr in our town we are banned from wearing hoodies in public places -_- I think that is grossly unfair, I just don't believe in the state or whatever telling us what we can and can't wear
October 21, 200618 yr Author I think that is grossly unfair, I just don't believe in the state or whatever telling us what we can and can't wear Its because they are seen as threatening and just cos we're wearing a hoodie it automatically means we are going to attack someone or steal something....its ridiculous thats why i dont agree with Veils as if we aren't allowed to wear hoodies then veils are practically the same and shouldn't have different rules -_-
October 21, 200618 yr Hoodies don't seem as threatening, probably coz we're used to seeing them. Edited October 21, 200618 yr by x-The_Royston_Poisoner-x
October 22, 200618 yr Hoodies don't seem as threatening, probably coz we're used to seeing them. Well, speaking for myself I would be more alert if I saw a gang of 'yoofs' in Hoodies than I would be a bunch of women in veils.... I mean, come ON......
October 22, 200618 yr A veil covers the face, a cross doesn't. Makes no difference, we're talking about State Institutions here, wearing a Cross in a State Institution is as much flying in the face of the whole idea of separation of church and state as wearing a veil is... There is absolutely NO place in schools for any of this religious sh!t as far as I'm concerned, it's brainwashing. I went to a sodding Catholic School for two years (I got myself deliberately expelled so I could go to a non-denominational Secondary school..) and I had my head filled with propaganda bullsh!t that should NOT be forced on kids, simple as. So for me, all State Schools should be religion-free zones... We dont allow any political parties into our schools to campaign, why allow some religion to do it...?
October 22, 200618 yr ^^That's got nothing to do with it really. Sorry, I think it's got everything to do with it, especially seeing as how we've been talking about the Muslim teaching assistant who wore a veil.... I dont wanna know if my kids (if I ever have any..) teacher is a Catholic any more than I would want to know if he/she was a Muslim, because, bottom line, they do NOT have the right, in a state institution, to ram their religious views (either subtly or unsubtly) down any kid's throat by wearing a veil or wearing a cross or wearing a skull cap.... On the street is one thing, but in a school with impressionable kids..? Nah...
October 22, 200618 yr I don't think kids mind their teacher wearing a cross on her necklace, however, you can't NOT notice a veil when you can only see their eyes.
October 22, 200618 yr I don't think kids mind their teacher wearing a cross on her necklace, however, you can't NOT notice a veil when you can only see their eyes. Whether they 'mind' or not is irrelevant, the teacher is there to TEACH!!! Full stop. Not to express a personal religious or political conviction....
October 22, 200618 yr But comparing a small cross on a chain to a veil covering all but the eyes is silly. I know which I'd prefer teaching my child.
October 22, 200618 yr When im out in the streets and im in my veil, admitedly i do get a few funny looks. but as Doreen Mantle (The brilliant Mrs. warboise From the 1990's upbeat liverpudlian documentry called "One Foot in Das Grave" which was about MR. Meldrew and the shanagans he got into) once said "......Ron, take this veil and wear it proud, for when i was a girl i wore it too (Much)..." but i do think carrying my cross round with me is abit tirering. it narf hurts my back. Personnly id like to see evryone in the world wear a veil and one of those stupid hats, like a upside down bowl. you know, like the pope wears
October 22, 200618 yr its bonkers.... i have no problem with anyone wearing a cross, and im athiest. it does not impare the ability to teach and i dont think anyone takes a blind bit of notice about the dratted thing. to me its just jewelry, nothing more. how t f can anyone teach when they are covered in a veil?... true that in a free country we are allowed to dress as we want, BUT, there are certain criterias where appropriate dress is required... its just common sense really.

I agree. It's trying to make an argument out of nothing saying a cross is just as bad.
