LTV, Latvia’s broadcaster for the Eurovision Song Contest, received submissions between September 6th and October 15th, last sunday. Overall, 93 songs have been submitted for Supernova, but only 63 respected the rules and the legal requirements for participating. One of those was a rule stating that foreign composers or writers could not have more than 30% of the copyright of a song.

Among the 63 songs, 55 are fully in English. Five songs are in Latvian, one is bilingual (Latvian-English), one is in Livonian and one is in Catalan.

The first public voting of the year!

Today, on October 18th, LTV opened the online voting for this first phase, the pre-selection. Anyone with an account on Facebook, Twitter, or Draugviem (a Latvian social network) can vote. Once connected through the specific links (provided at the end of the article), you will have to listen to each song and vote with “Like” or “Don’t like”. LTV asks you to vote “Like” for something you want to see in Supernova 2018, and “Don’t Like” otherwise. Only the titles of the songs are available, and no other details (singer, songwriter…etc.).

The online voting will be open until October 29th, 22:59 CEST (that is 23:59 in Latvia). Then, on November 5th, a jury panel will select a number of songs for the actual shows, Supernova 2018, that will take place in 2018. The online voting will be taken into account, but informally. It means, in a more “legal” vocabulary, that the voting is non-binding : it’s only a consultation, to help the jury members choose.

Now, while being connected with your corresponding account, you can vote with these links :

Facebook

Twitter

Draugviem.lv

You will need to sign-up, normally just confirming the identity of your account. None of the informations will be published by LTV.

Be aware : if you want to listen to all the 63 songs in a row, it could take more than three hours. From what we understand, it is possible to close the website and come back later to continue the voting. However, we can’t confirm you that totally.

After their disappointing (and unjust) last place finish in the semi with Triana Park, Latvia will be hoping Supernova can give them a hit without the help of Aminata. But if anyone has a spare 3 or so hours to give the 63 songs a listen then please let us know if there's any gems in there!

Have trawled through them all (listened to about 20 seconds of each). Nothing spectacular really. Stardust In Universe, Staccato and Sapnu Dziesma were my favourites. Soledad is Latvia's rather amusing nod to Despacito.

Soledad is Latvia's rather amusing nod to Despacito.

Oh I do LOVE the rip-offs we get treated to every year

This has actually reminded me that if there's any year Spain should do well, it's this year if they cleverly take advantage of the current wave of popularity for Latin tracks. They'd be the only ones who didn't feel like they were totally jumping onto a trend and could pull it off in a genuine manner.

Soledad is quite a bop though.

If anything I'm impressed that we've got a Despacito rip off this recently after it's been a big hit, usually the rule it that it runs about three years behind so the latino bops ought to have crept into the national final circuits in around 2020.

So the semis are all done and sadly we have lost Soledad but it's widely considered to be between these two songs (both of which I highlighted earlier in the thread, go me!)

Running order

Voting format
The voting will be 50% jury voting and 50% televoting.

The favourites to win
Fan favourites MADARA and Markus Riva are in with a chance of winning, but it's Laura Rizzotto who must be the favourite, after winning both the jury and public votes in her heat, the only act to do so.
markus is quite boring, Mandara is not as good live as I hoped, Laura is fantastic and very Aminata <3
Switched to this... who was the pretty girl? Edit: it was Laura Rizzotto

This Markus Riva song would be good if his vocal wasn't so unlistenable. He's cute though
let's end this super saturday on a high note plz
