As you can see, the Christmas songs didn't slowly build up the chart as they do in the UK; instead most just made a big impact on the week of Christmas, with basically four days of sales/streams since Christmas was on a Monday. Mariah Carey's song reclaims its original #4 peak, while Michael Buble smashes his #36 peak and, believe it or not, Brenda Lee and John Lennon/Yoko Ono make the NZ top 40 for the first time.

 

On the albums chart, now's probably a good time to see how many weeks Divide has actually had at #1...and the answer is 26, meaning it was #1 for 25 weeks last year, nearly half the year. This is its first week at #1 since 16th October, and at one point it did drop as far as #5.

Perhaps most notably, Charli XCX is in the NZ chart for the first time since 'Break The Rules'. Machine Gun Kelly has his first since 'Bad Things', and X Ambassadors have their first appearance as lead artist, their only other one being the feature on 'Sucker For Pain'.

 

On the albums chart, the Six60 EP gets a new peak at #2 six weeks after debuting at #3, while Sol3 Mio show their strength by staying top 10 the week after Christmas. G-Eazy gets a new peak as well, up to #25 two weeks after debuting at #26.

The Cranberries have had seven charting albums in NZ, including this best-of which gets a new peak at #13. They had two #1 albums (No Need To Argue and To The Faithful Departed) and nine charting singles, including three top 10s: 'Zombie' (#5), 'Salvation' (#7), and 'Ode To My Family' (#8). This may be a slight surprise that Drake *only* debuts at #7. Not sure if there's any data missing or if his lead on Spotify just wasn't big enough. Strange considering 'Passionfruit' got to #2 but 'Fake Love' missed the top 40 so there must have been a glitch there too. Oh well, another week at #1 for Ed it is. He's still #1 combined on iTunes so who knows when he'll be dethroned.

 

Fall Out Boy have started a nice pattern of peaking at #2, #4, and now #6 with their last 3 albums. Infinity On High is their only #1 album in New Zealand.

Ah, there we go, Drake is #1 now. Dua Lipa is top 5 and Camila is top 10, so not a bad week for movement. Rudimental earns their first entry since 'Lay It All On Me', because surprisingly 'Sun Comes Up' missed the NZ top 40. It's automatically Jess Glynne's second-highest entry, behind 'Rather Be' which peaked at #2. Her others--'Real Love', 'My Love', and 'Not Letting Go'--all peaked in the 30s, and yes that means she's never had a solo hit in NZ.

 

Ed is dethroned in the album chart too, you've probably never heard of Tomorrow People but this is their third #1 album so they're a big enough deal. At #5, Migos improve quite handily on the #20 peak of Culture last year.

This is strange, Tomorrow People had the #1 album last week but are nowhere to be seen on the album chart this week :unsure: Justin Timberlake earns his fifth top 5 album out of five, and his second consecutive #3 album. His first three albums peaked at #5, #4, and #1 respectively, so if Man Of The Woods could somehow climb to #2 he'd have a full house :magic:

'These Days' becomes Rudimental's joint second-highest charting hit to date, matching the #4 peak of 'Feel The Love' and only trailing the #2 peak of 'Bloodstream'. Kendrick and SZA leapfrog them into the top 3, so it's charting higher in NZ than anywhere else at the moment. Similarly, Bazzi's 'Mine' quickly jumps in the top 10 before it inevitably follows suit in other countries.

 

The Fifty Shades soundtrack series sees diminishing returns; the first peaked at #2 and the second at #4, while this one opens at #10. We'll see if it climbs. Black Panther has a strong debut and Justin Timberlake avoids a sharp drop in his second week.

I must admit, the top end of the chart is looking fresh, with the entire top 8 having charted for 8 weeks or less. It's just the same songs that are hits everywhere else, with the exception of Khalid, who earns his fourth top 10 with 'Love Lies' - keep in mind he only has one top 10 in the US! Post Malone falls just short of what would've been his third #1 in less than six months. We get a belated new entry for Liam and Rita; 'For You' is Liam's second chart entry as 'Get Low' and 'Bedroom Floor' both missed out, and it's Rita's 8th, currently matching the peak of her last collab 'Lonely Together'.

 

On the albums chart, Vance Joy actually halves the peak of his last album, which was #40, and Bruno Mars' first two albums re-enter from the first two nights of the NZ leg of his tour. The last two nights were Friday and Saturday so they'll count toward next week.

This may be the freshest top 10 we get all year, with all 10 songs having charted for 9 weeks or less. 'Love Lies' becomes Khalid's third top-3 hit, following the #1 'Young Dumb & Broke' and the #3 'Silence'. Justin Timberlake finally claims a top 20 hit from his new album, a good recovery from 'Filthy' missing the top 40 completely. To get an idea how streaming-dominant the chart has become, 'Coming Home' by Sheppard has been top 5 on NZ iTunes but due to poor streams has yet to even make the Heatseekers chart. 'This Is Me' has also been #1 on iTunes for most of the past few weeks but has only made it to #15 officially.

 

On the albums chart, Logic's mixtape makes the top 5, his highest peak to date beating his last album Everybody which reached #14, and Ed Sheeran has dethroned yet another album at #1 over a year after its release.

Has 'The Middle' peaked already? If so, it hasn't become Zedd's highest-charting single as lead artist, instead matching the #9 peak of 'Stay'. You may vaguely recall XXXTentacion's 'Jocelyn Flores' charting higher in NZ than anywhere else, which sort of explains how his newies are also charting fairly well here. Not much else going on in the singles other than the top 10 debut of 'Freaky Friday'.

 

On the albums chart, XXXTentacion matches the #2 peak of his first album, and yes, Ed Sheeran is boosted all around due to his tour coming to NZ - the first date of which was just this Saturday so he may have a much bigger boost next week! He's playing six shows and his openers are local faves Drax Project and Six60, so we'll see if they get a positive effect as well.

So 'God's Plan' spends "only" 9 weeks at the top, unable to match the 13 weeks of 'One Dance' but it is the longest run at #1 since 'Despacito', which also had 13 weeks. I suppose Drake could still reclaim #1 at any point, either with this or his new single. 'Freaky Friday' is Lil Dicky's first NZ #1 (obviously) and Chris Brown's seventh - his other six are 'Run It', 'Kiss Kiss', 'Forever', 'With You', 'No Air', and 'Yeah 3X'. Further down, The Weeknd scores his seventh top 10, and Six60 earns a new peak for 'Closer' in its 23rd week (previously peaked at #19)!

 

The Weeknd gets his second #2 on the albums chart, having been there before with Beauty Behind The Madness. Starboy only reached #5 in NZ. #8 appears to be a new peak for that Elton John album, its old peak was #17.
