New #1! 'Eastside' is the tenth #1 of 2018, including 'Perfect' which carried over from last year, and that's still two more than there was at this point last year. It's Halsey's second #1 following 'Closer' and Khalid's second #1 following 'Young, Dumb & Broke'. 'God is a woman' beats its previous #6 peak, while Ariana adds two more chart entries further down.

 

Speaking of Ariana, she earns her second consecutive and second overall #1 album. One wonders why Aretha Franklin's only two album chart appearances are a duet album and an orchestral album; there doesn't seem to be any eligibility issues with her other albums but maybe they just didn't sell? To be fair, Who's Zoomin' Who is her only top 10 NZ album, and it peaked at #6. This is Otis Redding's first ever NZ chart appearance, so that's cool.

At The Disco appears for the first time since 'Nine In The Afternoon'. Coincidentally both of those peaked at #28.

 

On the albums chart, BTS just miss the top 10 after their last release got to #5, and the one before that peaked at #9. Sweetener is Ariana's first album to be #1 for more than a week.

Eminem instantly outperforms his last era, where 'Walk On Water' only reached #18 and 'River' peaked at #3. His four new entries push a lot of songs down but there's still five songs earning new peaks, plus Ella Mai's new one already about to overtake 'Boo'd Up'.

 

On the albums chart, Eminem returns to his usual #1 spot after Revival only peaked at #3. This time #3 goes to Troye Sivan, which matches the peak position of Blue Neighbourhood and Wild. His highest is still TRXYE which peaked at #2. Pink's tour is in town and would've brought her back to #1 if Eminem hadn't released. Her last four NZ shows count toward next week so maybe she'll still get there.

Okay so P!nk can't quite climb to #1 after all, unable to overtake Eminem's sales and streams. Mac Miller posthumously gets his first NZ top 10 album, beating the original #13 peak for Swimming. It was already his highest-charting NZ album, with his previous releases peaking at #17, #29, #36 and not top 40 in reverse chronological order. Paul McCartney earns his highest solo album peak since 1993's Off The Ground, which peaked at #4! He hadn't even made the top 20 in those past 25 years.

 

On the singles chart, the artist cap rule allows Eminem to have two more new entries this week. The other debut is, of course, 'I Love It'. Kanye was just in the top 5 with 'All Mine', which peaked at #5, and this is his highest chart appearance since 'FourFiveSeconds' went to #1. This is Lil Pump's first time in the top 10 - 'Gucci Gang' peaked at #15. It's a decent week for movement as seven songs climb to new peaks.

New #1! 'I Love It' is the eleventh #1 of 2018, including 'Perfect' which carried over from last year, and that's one more than there was at this point last year. It's Kanye's sixth #1, the other five (including features) being 'Gold Digger', 'Stronger', 'Knock You Down', 'E.T.', and 'FourFiveSeconds'. 'Happier' has now matched the peak of 'Friends' and is also Bastille's highest peaking single, beating 'Pompeii' which peaked at #8. Plus, five new entries this week and all from different artists!

 

Not much on the albums chart - Carrie Underwood's last release was her highest peaking to date (#13 for Storyteller, also had a #22 peak for Blown Away) but she falls quite short of that with Cry Pretty.

It's also George's second #1, 'Budapest' being the other one. 'Happier', 'Promises' and 'Vibes' all rebound to new peaks. The Chainsmokers debut after 'Side Effects' missed out, and Lil Wayne charts for the first time since featuring on DJ Khaled's 'I'm The One' last year. It's his first as lead artist since 'Sucker For Pain' got to #5.

 

Lil Wayne also earns his highest peaking album, beating Tha Carter IV which peaked at #8. Not counting Mamma Mia from a couple months ago, Cher actually hasn't charted since Burlesque in 2010, as her last studio release Closer To The Truth never made the top 40. Dancing Queen is already her second highest-peaking album, behind her only #1 album Believe. Further down, Logic fails to match the #5 peak of Bobby Tarantino II from earlier in the year. This is still his second highest-peaking album though.

Halsey gets her very first solo top 20 hit, with 'Without Me' immediately beating the #22 peak of 'Now Or Never'. 'Bad Or Love' didn't chart in NZ and her three bigger hits were all collabs. Her feature on Justin Bieber's 'The Feeling' also charted at #20. Speaking of Halsey features, The Chainsmokers are this week's biggest climber, and by reaching #25 they've matched the peak of 'Sick Boy'.

 

Looks like Twenty One Pilots vs. Lady Gaga wasn't much of a battle here, as the former claim their first #1 album with A Star Born not even top 5 (could climb of course!). Blurryface peaked at #2, Vessel at #16, and a Vessel/Blurryface compilation at #13. Gaga hasn't had a #1 album since Born This Way, with Artpop and Joanne both peaking at #2 and Cheek To Cheek at #3. 'Shallow' just entered the top 40 on NZ Spotify and is #2 on NZ iTunes, selling double the #3, so it should debut officially next week.

'Shallow' at #2!! This is Gaga's highest chart position since 'Born This Way' was #1 in 2011. It's a definite contender for the next #1, along with Billie Eilish and Post Malone who have all overtaken 'Shotgun' on Spotify.

 

And on the album chart, it's Gaga's first #1 since...Born This Way again! That was her only #1 album until now, her other studio releases all peaked at #2 except for Cheek To Cheek (#3). Disturbed had four consecutive #1s spanning from 2002 to 2010, but their two releases since then have both charted at #2. And despite Khalid's massive popularity in NZ, his EP does not come close to the #5 peak of American Teen.

New #1! 'Shallow' is the 14th #1 of 2018 (including 'Perfect' which carried over from last year) which matches the amount of #1s from all of 2017. It's only Lady Gaga's third #1 in New Zealand, the other two being 'Poker Face' and 'Born This Way'. 'Always Remember Us This Way' climbs to #18, giving her nineteen top 20 hits. Further down, 'Woman Like Me' is no longer Little Mix's lowest-charting lead single, beating the #31 peak of 'Black Magic'.

Notably this week is the first time ever that Ed Sheeran's "x" has left the top 40. :o

The least Ed Sheeran-y chart in a long time then right? Obviously Divide is #4 still for some reason but other than that he’s mostly absent ;o

So the lack of a full week costs 'Thank U, Next' the #1 spot (or the strength of 'Shallow', or both) although it is very likely to get there next week anyway. Several songs climb a couple spots to new peaks, and we see the return of 'Bohemian Rhapsody' which was a former two-week #1 in NZ. Queen follows suit in the albums chart with three re-entries, and Sam Smith gets a big boost from his recent NZ concert dates. Andrea Bocelli debuts at #17, it's his 18th charting album, seven of which were top 10s. His last entry was Cinema which peaked at #6 in 2015. The Prodigy enter at #28, their lowest-charting of seven charting albums. They've had one #1 album with The Fat Of The Land, and their last release (also in 2015) peaked at #18.

New #1! 'thank u, next' is the 15th #1 of 2018 (including 'Perfect' which carried over from last year) which officially exceeds the amount of #1s from 2017. It's Ariana's second #1, the first being 'Problem'. Otherwise a stale top 10 except for Halsey reaching top 5. Actually the rest of the chart is stale too, just Imagine Dragons having their first entry since 'Born To Be Yours' (#22) and their first solo entry since 'Thunder' (#3), and local act Kings charting for the first time since their #5 smash 'Don't Worry 'Bout It' from over two years ago.

 

On the album chart, Imagine Dragons match their career peak of #3, which is where Evolve peaked last year, and continue the top 5 streak of all their albums. Muse on the other hand fail to get a fourth consecutive #1 album. Taylor Swift sees a big boost from just one New Zealand tour date last week.
