It seems we have an even more stale singles chart this week, with only two new entries near the bottom. Imagine Dragons' 'Bad Liar' instantly outpeaks 'Natural' which only debuted a week ago, and Zara Larsson charts for the first time since 'Symphony', which peaked at #12, and her first solo chart appearance since 'I Would Like', which peaked at #19.

 

The album chart is where all the action is, and yet none of the debuts could outsell A Star Is Born. Michael Buble can't quite manage his fourth #1, but does improve on the #3 peak of his last album. Mumford & Sons match the #4 peak of their previous album, while their other two were both #1s. Little Mix, on the other hand, have their highest chart appearance to date at #6. Their other albums have peaked at #14, #11, #8 and #9, in chronological order. Mariah Carey earns her lowest-charting studio album ever, beating 2009's Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel which peaked at #25. Her last release Me. I Am Mariah...The Elusive Chanteuse peaked at #11 in 2014.

Mark Ronson reappears shortly after he left the chart with 'Electricity' (peaked at #25); as for Miley Cyrus it's her first appearance since 'Malibu' peaked at #4 last year. And Lukas Graham earn their third ever chart entry, having previously been at #1 with '7 Years' and #29 with 'Mama Said'.

 

On the album chart, The 1975 earn their lowest charting album to date. Their previous album was a #1 and their self titled debut peaked at #5. Clean Bandit barely squeak in at #40, but tbf New Eyes didn't do much better, debuting at #30 and dropping out the following week. Alessia Cara fails to make the top 40.

At five weeks, 'thank u, next' is now the longest-running #1 since 'In My Feelings' which also had five weeks. Only 'God's Plan' has had more weeks at #1 this year, with nine. Much like everywhere else, NZ is getting a bigger Christmas chart invasion than last year. This same week a year ago, Mariah was the only Christmas song in the chart and it was #17. This week it's #11 with three festive re-entries beneath it. The Pogues and Brenda Lee are likely to re-enter next week based on their performance last year, we'll see.

Well what can I say, the chart speaks for itself this week! 23 Christmas songs in the top 40 and nearly all of them have a new peak. 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' is the 16th #1 of 2018 (including 'Perfect' which carried over from 2017), and beats its original peak of #4 which it reached both in 1994 and 2017. It's Mariah's 8th NZ #1 and first since 'Heartbreaker' in 1999! 'Last Christmas' and 'Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree' reach the top 10 for the very first time, and 'Mistletoe' appears for the first time since its original run in 2011, when it peaked at #11.
