Indeed, every song is on an equal playing field (ignoring playlistola ~) at all times. The only minor exception is that songs need to be selected by the labels to be tracked, so when a big new album comes out, it's often a coin flip as to whether or not the tracks will chart, often it's really arbirary like Kendrick's DAMN. having 3 debuts, but they weren't exactly the 3 biggest that week. You also often have Spotify hits that just aren't being noticed for some reason, so even though "Nevermind" is on top of Hot Hits Australia, and should even be in the top 50 streaming singles chart this week, it's curiously absent, and I've no idea if or when it will suddenly start charting.

("Flames" also still isn't getting its Spotify streams counted oops).

J. Cole have 5 new entries on the top 50, so I'm not sure we can assume the same thing happen for Post Malone given Universal Music distribute their material worldwide.

I dunno if we can really determine much from that. J. Cole's situation is unique because it seems like the only songs that were included for him were the ones that made the top 50. Realistically he should have had nearly his whole album charting. Universal recently had The Weeknd's entire EP in the top 50, and also many Eminem entries in the lower 50, but on the other hand, XXXTENTACION had only the 2 singles chart. We won't really have much idea until themusic.com.au do their midweek data post.

You know it's a busy week when "Shape Of You" is only #40 this week. Firstly the big news, Ariana Grande scores her first EVER :jameela: #1 single with "No Tears Left To Cry" selling very strongly to compensate being #2 on streaming. It means that for the first time in its run, "Psycho" is not #2 but it actually could return there next week. We've got a very heated battle for #1 this week which looks very likely to net Post Malone his 2nd #1 hit, it's just a question of whether "Psycho" will get there based on its early lead, or it will be blocked by the very strong start for "Better Now" which is in the process of catching up very quickly. Drake will likely be relatively close but probably end up at #3.

As for this week, it lines up with the news of Avicii's passing, and this week sees 7 of his songs re-enter the top 100, 4 in the top 50. Oddly enough this does not include 2 of his 4 top 5 hits, "Addicted To You" and "I Could Be The One", though I suppose most of them are more recent. "Wake Me Up" is the highest at #14, but shout out to "Levels" which matches its old peak of #24 and further solidifies itself as one of the highest selling non-top 20 hits ever (it has at least reached top 20 on the digital tracks chart now), certified 4xPlatinum with roughly 300,000 sales. Also this week we have J. Cole impacting, having only previously charted 2 songs when his last album went about the same release process. This time he has 5 entries, all of them in the top 50 which makes me think that ARIA excluded all of the ones that didn't make the top 50. However for fans of chart accuracy, Dennis Lloyd's "Nevermind" has also finally been allowed on the chart, and meanwhile I believe Joe Jonas is a judge on Australia's The Voice which sent "Cake By The Ocean" flying up the iTunes chart, it was actually #1 combined briefly, it re-enters at #77.

On the album chart, J. Cole debuts at #1 with "KOD", his first album to hit the summit, helped largely by streams as he was certainly outsold. J. Cole's penchant for releasing albums in December means that he only made the top 10 once before with his last album, arguably his most popular album "2014 Forest Hills Drive" only peaked at #40 because of this. Unable to have such luck is A Perfect Circle whose new album "Eat The Elephant" becomes their 2nd #2 album following "Mer de noms" back in 2000. Maynard has of course hit #1 twice with Tool though. I had not realised until I saw this week's chart that Samantha Jade had released a new album, which if not determined from the title, is a disco covers album. This is her 2nd top 10 album following her X Factor coronation album, with her album of original songs peaking at #11. Next week is sure to be a competitive time as we've got two Australian artists with a history of #1 albums, 3 each, both releasing new albums, they being Keith Urban & Missy Higgins. But it'll be a question of whether their likely strong physical sales can combat with the streaming dominance of Post Malone, who looks likely to set record breaking numbers with his 2nd studio album.

Really refreshing to see a different artist at number 1 there!

No sign of Jess Mauboy's ESC entry at the moment - did it hit the chart when it came out?

  • Author
Yeah, it actually debuted at #2 on the digital chart (probably #3 on sales) which corresponded to #47 overall. That's actually a bit unusual as Dami & Guy didn't actually hit the top 50 until after ESC, so maybe she'll be able to return if she ranks highly with it.

I had hoped that one kiss would manage number one but it's lead on iTunes never got big enough sadly. Still, it's now track 1 on hot hits Australia and the video is about to drop so it could provide post Malone with some competition.

Speaking of post Malone I think psycho will climb to number one this week. I'd say it's a likely safe bet better now will overtake over next week at the moment unless one kiss or something else pulls away

I'm bad at predicting things. As it turns out, an early lead from the start of the week is all that's required for "Psycho" to wrap things up. So it belatedly reaches the #1 peak that it really should have gotten upon debut, giving Post Malone his 2nd #1 hit, and Ty Dolla $ign his first. As it turns out, "Better Now" was let down by Apple streaming, which without the same playlist guiding as Spotify meant it wasn't able to solidify itself as the top album track (right now "Ball For Me" is still ahead of it there). Being presently #1 on Spotify doesn't hurt so it could still challenge for #1, but it'll probably need to start getting more airplay to lift its seriously lagging sales, currently #39 on iTunes. It is very difficult to determine #1 for this upcoming week except that it probably won't be either Post Malone track. Drake continues to show strong sales & streams, as does Ariana. The problem here is that Hot Hits Australia seems to be the latest playlist to turn into an unsortable mess with videos included, one of those being "No Tears Left To Cry". It's well publicised that these streams don't count to the UK Chart, but I've no idea what ARIA will do with it, if they even notice something going on with it. These streams could well be the difference between Ariana & Drake this week. Childish Gambino is also doing very well on iTunes currently, but his mid-week release will keep him out of contention at the moment. Anyway I should probably get back to talking about Post Malone because he's pretty much the only news this week, in quite a big way. All but 2 tracks on "beerbongs & bentleys" are in the top 50 this week, with "Sugar Wraith" a little lower down, and "Jonestown (Interlude)" having been discluded (it got enough streams to chart), which when you include "I Fall Apart" alongside them, gives him 17 songs in the top 50. That's 1 more than Ed Sheeran had last year, and also 2 more than Michael Jackson did the week after he passed away (though that doesn't include "ABC", "Can You Feel It" or "Blame It On The Boogie" which takes Michael's tally to 18, choose to take whichever interpretation you wish). Such is this explosion of new entries, that we've actually finally gotten rid of "Shape Of You" for the first time ever, though I imagine it will return next week. The only other new entry in the entire top 100 is from Hayden James, teaming up with Boy Matthews of uncredited "Ocean Drive" fame, possibly vying to be his 3rd top 50 hit as it's closing in on the Spotify top 50 at the moment.

You might think that this streaming dominance meant for an obvious #1 from Post Malone on the album chart, but it was actually rather close, as he went up against Keith Urban, whose last album was the #2 seller of 2016 (only behind "25"). In the end it went the way of Post Malone whose weekly streaming figure is certainly a new record in terms of being counted to the chart (Ed Sheeran's album release slightly predates it, and I believe slightly surpasses Post's numbers). Speaking of Sheeran because it's hard to avoid it discussing the charts, he's had quite a bit of a hand in this week's new releases, as he wrote Keith Urban's recently gold certified "Parallel Line", and also had Missy Higgins supporting him on his national tour a month ago. Her latest album debuts at #3, the same position released by her previous album which was also released on a busy week where the entire top 5 was new entries. Also we might not see him back at #1 any time soon as The Greatest Showman has overtaken "Divide" for the first time since he was in the country, pushing it to an all new chart low of #5(!). Sheeran is finished obviously. Keith Urban is not the only Australian country artist with a string of #1 albums that released this week, as Kasey Chambers has her new album enter at #6, her 9th top 10 entry. Meanwhile Australia's approximation of '90s British rock, DMA's, have their 2nd album out and in at #7, surpassing the #8 peak of their debut, which also released on a week where it was only the 5th highest debut. Next week we'll see if Post Malone's staying power allows a 2nd week at #1, or else Australian metalcore stalwarts Parkway Drive may be picking up their 2nd #1 album. Or maybe The Greatest Showman will return; the more predictions I make, the less likely I'm wrong.

Edited by Dircadirca

how nice of Australia to actually let (most of) the Post Malone album tracks chart :D was wondering if we'd get another ARIA inconsistency mess. Good to see 'Psycho' being able to beat Drake to #1 if only for a week too though I do prefer 'Nice For What'.
Psycho felt like a #1 already so it’s great to see that finally happen.

With no big streaming albums out this week, the charts have calmed down a bit, which sees "Nice For What" returning for a 2nd week at the top. It sits ahead of "Better Now", the one Post Malone track to climb this week thanks to gaining radio & streaming traction. As it stands, Post Malone has now had two #1 hits and two #2 hits. I thought Ariana Grande was in with a shot, but it turns out that just like in the UK, Spotify video streams don't count to the chart, so she can only hold at #3 and is looking very unlikely to ever return to #1. But the same can be said of any of these songs as it is looking fair to say that Childish Gambino will safely bolt to the top of the chart with "This Is America", which a few days ago became the first song to simultanously top the iTunes, Apple & Spotify charts since "Despacito". Debuting at #7, it becomes his first ever top 10 hit, having gotten as high as #27 with his slow burning hit "Redbone", one of only 3 songs to chart for every single week of 2017. Also kind of a noteworthy surprise in the top 10, 5 Seconds Of Summer. With very strong sales (#1 on iTunes right now!) and streams to boot, "Youngblood" seems to be one of their first songs to really catch on beyond their usual demographics, becoming their 5th top 10 hit in the process. This is also noteworthy because it's an Australian song in the top 10, something that has gotten to be so rare lately that the last two songs to do it were both Pnau songs which were riding on Hottest 100 hype on separate years. 5SOS may even have company in that regard, as Amy Shark is not far behind with "I Said Hi", which became her first ever digital #1 single and is starting to catch some major streaming traction. They're not the only Australians to be doing well right now as out of nowhere Sia's song with David Guetta, "Flames" has gotten a serious boost of...ARIA finally fixed it so it shoots straight into the top 20. Ironically this happens the same week Sia released another new song as part of her supergroup LSD, which I can only imagine seriously confused ARIA with the way it was tagged on Spotify because it has taken the reigns of "Flames" and is completely missing from the chart despite looking like a potential top 50 debut. :drama: There's a song called "Youth" and a Troye Sivan song debuting which are not the same thing, and Khalid does a double this week as alongside his Shawn Mendes collaboration, he helps gift Billie Eilish her first ever top 50 hit which is pretty neat if you ask me.

Australian acts have always had trouble keeping up with the heightened promotional budgets of international counterparts. I distinctly recall in 2010 when Eminem released "Recovery", it spent 9 weeks at #1, 8 of those weeks had an Australian act at #2, meaning that Eminem stopped Sia, Birds of Tokyo & Parkway Drive from getting their first #1 albums, and Kylie Minogue had a 3 week #2 peaking album to boot. Fortunately for those acts, they all eventually would go on to have #1 albums in the ensuing years. Post Malone narrowly blocked Keith Urban from hitting #1 last week so it looked possible that he was taking Eminem's role as the Australian #1 blocking white rapper, but the tables have been turned by one of those very acts that Eminem blocked in 2010, that being metalcore heavyweights Parkway Drive. Their 6th studio album "Reverence" becomes their 2nd #1 album in a row. Also debuting in the top 10 is Leon Bridges who reaches #8, the same peak as his first album, and also another Australian band Middle Kids, whose

I have a lot of fondness for. Next week I would imagine Arctic Monkeys are a decent chance for #1, but iTunes have also heavily discounted The Greatest Showman soundtrack all week so you can't count that out either.

In one of the more surprising circumstances I've ever witnessed on the charts, Childish Gambino now has a #1 hit with "This Is America". It keeps "Better Now" at #2 where it will probably stay again next week as the chart continues to be volatile. Amazingly next week's #1 looks to be "Youngblood" by 5 Seconds Of Summer which is #1 on iTunes & Apple and not far behind on Spotify. What's also surprising is that we actually have 2 Australian songs in the top 10 at the same time, as Amy Shark gets her 2nd top 10 hit with "I Said Hi". Also on the note of Australian artists, Jessica Mauboy has an expected return to the chart with a new peak for "We Got Love" following Eurovision. Hayden James also gets his 3rd top 50 hit with "Just Friends" which might be able to push him into the top 40 for the first time thanks to strong streams.

On the album chart, Arctic Monkeys pick up their 3rd #1. They previously hit #1 very narrowly with their debut, and of course with "AM". They're unable to top the Digital Albums chart though, The Greatest Showman soundtrack refuses to stop selling. The latest Sony artist to do a covers album is Delta Goodrem, this time focusing on Olivia Newton-John, giving her a 6th top 5 album. Reaching a new height though is Charlie Puth with his 2nd album outpacing his first by 1 position at #7, and Bad Wolves are getting some attention on songs they've actually written themselves notching a top 10 debut. Personal favourites Beach House have done a Hayden James on the album chart, but 10 spots higher as they get their 3rd top 40 album, though without having reached the top 30. Next week will be a busy one for new entries though it's not obvious if there'll be a new #1. We've got Five Finger Death Punch, BTS, Courtney Barnett & James Bay to cover all the demographics.

Volatile is a good way to describe the chart right now  I'm so glad that No Tears Left To Cry/Psycho/This Is America all managed to go #1 despite Drake's constant heavy presence in the chart. I reckon the next #1s will be Youngblood, Better Now, and then Happier. One Kiss and Back To You are possible future contenders too, both will be Top 3 before long at least and Shawn Mendes will get an album boost this week which could propel him up again

Please don't tell me there's a Happier Duet/Symphony in the pipeline, I've had enough Divide to last a lifetime :P

I'd love for one kiss to get there but I think it's time has passed. Youngblood could be number one for a while as they are on the voice at the weekend, unless better now can overtake.

I must say that I am finding the digital chart more interesting than the main chart at the moment.

Please don't tell me there's a Happier Duet/Symphony in the pipeline, I've had enough Divide to last a lifetime :P

I read somewhere there was I think... but maybe not :P

Interesting that the airplay chart has Hurt Somebody at #1 for another week but it’s now falling down the chart...

Yeah, Hot Hits Australia had it right up near the top (with a cover photo to boot!), only to shove it like 30 spots down a week or so ago, making it drop #22->#35 in one day, because charts in 2018.

For the first time in close to 2 years, we have an Australian artist at #1. I hope you have crumple zones ready for awful word play because this means that 5 Seconds Of Summer have their second time at the #1 spot, while in these post-Post Malone album drop weeks, Post Malone continues to post strong but not strong enough streams as "Better Now" is now #2 for 3 weeks. To go back to 5SOS, a particularly bitter person could note that this is the first time a song of theirs has hit #1 proper, because "She Looks So Perfect" almost certainly hit #1 due to combined sales from individual tracks on the EP of the same name. Aside from a mostly stable top 10 this week, Anne-Marie scores a 4th top 10 with her frankensong "2002". As predicted last week, Hayden James gets his first top 40 hit this week, and that's the same case for BTS. To move onto artists past their glory days, this week has the Backstreet Boys back in the top 100 for the first time since 2009 and top 50 for the first time since 2007. Also not having charted for a decade is Celine Dion who gets her first chart entry since 2007.

To my surprise we don't have a new #1, we don't even have a Greatest Showman #1, we've got Post Malone returning to #1, with sales that I can't imagine are particularly strong. We very nearly had an Australian double at #1 as Courtney Barnett's 2nd album debuts at #2, outpeaking her debut which made it to #4, though I believe is the newest album to achieve a gold certification by an artist that is not a children's entertainer and has never had a charting single. Also debuting in the top 10 this week is Five Finger Death Punch, who don't score a new peak, but do get their 2nd top 10 album. There's also BTS who do score a new peak to go along with their top 10 album, and I imagine the highest peaking Asian album in some time on the basis that I can only also think of BABYMETAL's #7 peak. The 2nd Deadpool soundtrack cracks the top 10 after the first one peaked at #18. Next week I will not 100% count out Post Malone, but I imagine he won't be able to stop Shawn Mendes from scoring his first #1 album. Also appearing in the top 10 should be CHVRCHES & A$AP Rocky.

Lovely is shooting up the chart now, Top 15 next/this week and hopefully even higher soon. It's lagging behind a bit on sales compared to streams, not that that makes a huge difference, though. Ocean Eyes is almost Top 60 on Spotify too after getting a bit of a playlist push, I see that becoming another huge hit for Billie here despite being from her previous album

Happier should have a decent boost next week with how well the Tiesto remix is doing. It's fairly crap in terms of remixes I think but I'm happy if it gives Ed another hit ;)

5 Seconds Of Summer now have their longest running #1 on any chart with "Youngblood" getting a 2nd week at the top. It has become the first Australian song since "Fancy" to hit #1 on the Streaming Singles chart, and I think the first song to top both streaming & sales at the same time since "Perfect", so it's pretty ingrained in the top spot for the time being. Thanks to the shuffling of the chart, "One Kiss" manages to hit a belated new peak of #3 which will probably be as high as it gets. Also climbing in the top 10 is Selena Gomez who scores her 5th top 10 hit, and first non-collaboration to get there for that matter. As it turns out, the collaborator on her first top 10 hit is also hitting new heights, as A$AP Rocky gets his highest ever lead artist single with "Praise The Lord (Da Shine)", which is also the first time Skepta has ever appeared on the singles chart here. Sydney trio RÜFÜS DU SOL score their 4th top 50 hit this week, their first since changing their name from just RÜFÜS.

The singles chart is littered with Shawn Mendes tracks so it's not too big of a surprise to see that this week he scores his first ever #1. He does so managing to be the only new entry to overcome the 3 album chart juggernauts of 2018. A$AP Rocky has the next highest entry, matching his previous peak of #5, while Xavier Rudd scores his 6th top 10 album (and 3rd to peak at #6), and CHVRCHES their 2nd. Bizarrely Taylor Swift returns to the top 10 with "1989" as "reputation" falls out of the top 20, while Pusha T scores his first top 50 album, and Snow Patrol actually halve the peak of their previous album. Interestingly aside from Khalid and 3 new entries, the entire top 50 have peaked in the top 10. Next week we'll see if Kanye West can score his 2nd #1 album, while Australian electro stalwarts The Presets will aim for a 3rd top 5 album.

Kanye West is such an odd entity in the charts that even if I wasn't a big fan there'd be a lot to unpack this week. For starters though, 5 Seconds Of Summer continue to carry on with "Youngblood" at the top of the chart for a 3rd week. It's starting to face some competition on streaming from Post Malone who is neck & neck on Spotify (though arguably ahead as 5SOS have ineligible video streams from Hot Hits Australia), but he's way behind on sales and can't really pose a threat yet. Maroon 5 are also back in the charts with the peculiar stat that "Girls Like You" is their first top 5 hit since "One More Night", as their long running hits of late have all had a habit of just missing the top 5. It's also Cardi B's first ever top 5 single. Also for fans of mathematical patterns, Childish Gambino's last 4 weeks have had him matching triangular numbers as he goes 1-3-6-10. That is however, perhaps misinformation as we get into the info that Kanye West has had his entire new album debut in the top 50. This is despite releasing a day later than usual, and it also seems that he's been disadvantaged quite heavily by some sort of data mis-representation. I say this because "All Mine" was pretty much locked for about #3 on streaming based on Apple & Spotify, but only ended up at #9 on that particular chart, and #12 overall. Nonetheless, it's a fascinating turn of events as Kanye has not seen a track from a studio album of his reach the top 40 since "All Of The Lights", though many of them have since achieved gold & platinum certifications.

"ye" also hits #1 on the album chart, which is Kanye's 2nd #1 album after "Yeezus". "Yeezus" is in fact a very peculiar case in ARIA Chart history as it's one of the very few instances I can think of where ARIA have actually revised a chart after publishing, a big change from now when they just ignore the several errors that are plaguing the chart from week to week. But indeed, when that 2013 album chart came out, Kanye was #2 behind a collaboration album from Adam Brand & Troy Cassar-Daley. It was later discovered that sales of that album to retailers were accidentally included in its count and so the top 2 were swapped around. Incidentally this happened in the same year that Jay Z achieved an instant platinum certification in the US by getting Samsung to buy 1M copies of his new album. Anyway, that was also the last time Kanye West ever impacted the album chart because the even more obtuse release strategy with "The Life Of Pablo" means that the album was not even eligible to chart at the time. I actually don't know if it's eligible now that streaming counts to the album chart, but nonetheless it's still never hit the album chart. "ye" is notably short at just 7 tracks, but it is not quite the shortest #1 album we've ever had, which I believe is Troye Sivan's "Wild" EP, which is 2 minutes shorter. Anyhow, the next highest debut on the chart comes from The Presets who score their 3rd top 5 album, having previously hit #1 with their immensely successful "Apocalypso" album in 2008. Moving up in the world is Ghost, who score their first ever top 10 album with their 4th album. Also on the way up is Father John Misty who keeps climbing higher, now with his 4th album under said moniker he scores his first top 10. Luke Combs also shoots into the top 10 with thanks to a deluxe edition. Next week looks to be a competitive week on the album chart, as Kanye West is back at it again with his Kid Cudi collaboration album "KIDS SEE GHOSTS", but we've also got another Australian band, Sheppard who could challenge for the top spot, alongside the usual suspects of Post Malone & The Greatest Showman.
