This is not a particularly thrilling week and it does not help that matter when Calvin Harris & Marshmello's new hits seem to both be missing their Apple streams (there is a distressingly similar situation for "Baby Shark" which is not appearing on this chart). Otherwise the chart is providing excellent reasoning for album tracks to be let on the chart because otherwise nothing else happens, unless of course you're seeing that long list of bottom end re-entries and thinking 'thank goodness they're still making an imprint'. This isn't entirely fair to the chart as there are two new entries in the top 50. Firstly BTS have very narrowly scored a new singles chart peak with their 3rd top 50 hit "IDOL". And secondly we have the very timely return of Jason Derulo, a couple weeks after I remarked that he's yet to score a top 50 hit this year. His streak of making the top 50 at least once has made it to 10 consecutive years, and he does it because there are no popular songs right now that rhyme with "Waste" and that he got luckily prominent placings on iTunes & Spotify...so his questionable Bocelli sampling gets in at #50. Also because of a very slow promotion cycle, "Never Ever" is now the highest song with Sarah Aarons providing vocals, even though it was actually released before "Fire/Reprisal". Australia's favourite whinging babies The Amity Affliction score their 4th consecutive #1 album. These have all been in the 2010s, so they join the small list of artists with 4 different #1 albums this decade, off the top of my head this includes One Direction, Lana Del Rey & Taylor Swift. Recently announced/released albums for Bring Me The Horizon & Eminem could also put them in that list. BTS also score another top 10 album but unlike the upward trend on the singles chart, this is the lowest peaking of those 3. Next week is a strange powerhouse battle of Eminem, Troye Sivan & Tash Sultana.

Here is where things start to complicate for him though as he is no longer #1 on either sales or streaming. The former goes to George Ezra with "Shotgun" now becoming his highest ever charting single at #3 ("Budapest" having peaked at #5), but with it only sitting at #9 on Streaming, it can't yet compete for the top spot. What will be competing is Benny Blanco who continues to rule the streaming chart and came surprisingly close to the top of the chart this week (it's hard to tell exactly because "Be Alright" is getting a lot of video streams misrepresenting its Spotify numbers), and it looks like he will close the gap even more this week so he could just snatch it. On the writing & production side of things he has previously had 7 #1 hits here, the first being "TiK ToK" and most recent being "Cold Water". I also forgot to mention last week that Drake's "In My Feelings" had been slipping down the chart with a Fibonacci sequence (1-1-2-3-5), sadly this week he falls a little too low to continue that. Part of the blame is on the elephant in the room that is Eminem's new album. Last year's splash for "Revival" was a bit muted, and only the 2 singles made the top 50 (though about half a dozen others charted in the 51-100 section). He has considerably improved his fortunes this time around as the entire album (minus the skits) is in the top 50 this week. He also instantly matches the count of top 10 hits on "Revival", with "Kamikaze" instantly getting 2, "Lucky You" and "The Ringer". "Lucky You" is Joyner Lucas's first ever top 50 hit, he previously entered the top 100 alongside Chris Brown with "Stranger Things". If I'm not mistaken too, with vocal contributions on "Fall", it's the first time in the top 50 for Bon Iver, who because of "Skinny Love" being left out of the chart for no reason, only ever charted in the top 100 with the very inaccessible single "Heavenly Father". Once again I have to spend most of this time speaking about Eminem because there's very little else happening. His influx of entries does stop a top 50 debut for Dynoro, whose "In My Mind" has been getting ignored from the chart for a few weeks now, which I can kind of understand because the official YouTube upload isn't even available in Australia, maybe they're not super interested in promoting a song that's already been a top 50 hit twice this decade here. Also just narrowly missing the top 100 is "Baby Shark". Vance Joy never stops doing promo so "Riptide" is back in the chart, oddly ahead of anything on his new album. The album chart was looking to be quite a battle, and we were due for another Australian double at the top, but then Eminem went and spoiled it all by releasing a new album out of nowhere. In doing so he has the biggest weekly album figures of the year, (unless you count Ed Sheeran's post-Christmas week which was technically a January chart though the sales were done in December) and with no physical sales to boot. As a result, the whole top 3 have sales that would be respectable enough for a #1 on many weeks. In the runner up slot we've got multi-instrumentalist and loop pedal enthusiast Tash Sultana. I associate Tash a lot with Amy Shark as they both released huge breakout singles only about a month apart and would end up in the 2nd & 3rd slots of 2016's Hottest 100 with those songs. Despite very similar time gaps between those breakouts & the eventual albums, Amy included "Adore" on her album, while Tash did not include "Jungle". Following that, we've got Troye Sivan who continues to be not very fortunate with release timing outside of his "WILD" EP which became the first ever EP to hit #1 on the album chart. His album "Blue Neighbourhood" however was released in the very busy month of December and could only reach #6. This time around he's a bit higher but still unfortunate given his competition to land at #3. Next up is the very prolific Passenger who always seems to have a new album around the corner, this is now his 5th to reach the top 10. Reaching the top 10 for the first time however is Why Don't We, who have evidently started building quite a fanbase despite only having 1 very brief running top 100 charting single, and the dubious honour of giving Logan Paul a chart hit. Next week Eminem will probably be able to retain the top spot ahead of Paul McCartney.
September 11, 20186 yr was hoping for Troye to be #1 but wasn't counting on Eminem's surprise release, never heard of this Tase Sultana

Kendrick Lamar I am aware that you have an affinity for the ARIA Charts however it is no longer, brethren, because the rurals have won again for 5 weeks in a row. I do not think it's impossible for "Eastside" to get there, though this week may be its last chance, with George Ezra making big gains on streaming. Any of the three songs could be next week's #1 I think. Calvin Harris's streams seem to be correctly counted now so "Promises" gives him another top 5 hit for 2018, it's just 1 spot behind "One Kiss"'s #3 peak. Kanye West also scores his 2nd top 10 hit for the year, and his highest for that matter for reasons that definitely do not relate to ARIA mucking up "ye"'s first week streams. With a slow start on streams, there's a good chance it will climb next week. "I Love It" is also Lil Pump's first top 10 hit. I also want to just skip ahead briefly to mention that Dynoro's "In My Mind" has hit the top 50, I believe it's the first charting hit for both him and uncredited Gigi D'Agostino. The dumb chart facts nerd in me also has to mention that this is the 3rd version of "In My Mind" to reach the top 50, following Ivan Gough & Feenixpawl's collaboration, and then Flo Rida's ruining of it, both of these were in 2012. What also happened in 2012 was that we had what I believe were until this week the only top 10 hits called "I Love It", by Hilltop Hoods and Icona Pop, so this week both of those extremely specific 2012 pairings get a 2018 counterpart. Eminem's tracks all drop this week, the best fairing track is curiously "Kamikaze", for reasons that are definitely not related to the fact that ARIA have seemingly mixed up its streaming numbers with "Fall" which curiously is only his 5th highest track on the chart despite being the only one in the top 40 digital tracks chart. Also this week, Silk City get their first chart entry here with "Electricity", giving Mark Ronson a 3rd guise that he's made the top 50 under, Diplo I think may get his 5th guise if LSD continue their climbing. For the first time in a little over a month, we have an album retaining the top spot, which means that I don't have to change the subheading for this thread. There was some competition however, and it wasn't from Paul McCartney, who despite syncing up his release week with the man who made him famous a few years ago, but instead a local act. Surf rock group Skegss are very easy to misspell, but despite that have amassed quite the fanbase to make a #2 debut with their first full length album. It's not on there but I recommend "Got On My Skateboard" as a super catchy light rock track from last year. Also making a big impact is Mac Miller due to the unfortunate news of him passing away last week. His newest album re-enters in a big way, becoming his first top 10 peaker at #7. Also entering high in the top 10 is $uicideboy$ whose reason for high digital album sales cannot be ascertained, but good for them. It's another L for Russ who misses the top 40. Next week's biggest news appears to be Carrie Underwood, Good Charlotte & David Guetta, so Eminem is probably looking good for a 3rd week at the top.

And the reason I did that is because we have a new #1 this week! As expected, it was quite a close battle between the top three and taking the honours is George Ezra, "Shotgun" becoming his first ever #1 hit over here. Just like it was in the UK, and proving that it is a viable smash hit even in relatively cold weather. It also shows that dominant sales can still get you across the line, as "Shotgun" is only #4 on the streaming chart but #1 by quite a margin on sales. It should safely be #1 again next week so the real battle will be who out of Dean Lewis, Benny Blanco & Kanye West will take the #2 slot. Though his contribution to both songs is relatively similar, if you were to not include "FourFiveSeconds", then "I Love It" has become Kanye West's first top 5 single since..."Stronger". On the topic of very slow rising songs, we've got..."Rise" :basil: which hits a new peak in its 15th week in the top 100. Marshmello continues to be a consistent hitmaker getting his 4th top 10 hit with "Happier", his only top 50 hit to not go top 10 being the Logic collaboration. It's also Bastille's 3rd top 10 hit, they've not been seen in these heights (or the chart at all) since 2013's "Of The Night" & "Pompeii". The only top 50 debut this week comes from Khalid, because it's law that he must be on 3 simultaneous hits at once and "lovely' is about to leave the top 50. George Ezra isn't the only very belated UK import, as to the delight of people who use the phrase 'real music' unironically, Tom Walker cracks the top 50 driven largely by being #4 on digital tracks though streaming is coming in. Incidentally this week's #6 digital track, an charity ensemble cover of Dragon's hit "Rain" misses the top 100 narrowly. Also amusingly, Machine Gun Kelly's "Rap Devil" comes into the top 50, sitting one place behind the Eminem song that fueled it. A slow week on the album chart very nearly sent Ed Sheeran back to #2 on sheer inertia. Eminem remains at #1 for a third week easily, the first album this year to spend its first 3 weeks at #1. Carrie Underwood has the highest debut this week and scores her 3rd #4 peaking album, a peak shared by all her top 10s. She is succeeding largely on sales while 6LACK succeeds largely on streams as his first album chart entry gets him to his appropriate number of #6. David Guetta cannot continue this as his radical transformation of Beach House's newest album "7" instead lands at #9. This is his 3rd top 10 album, as "Listen" was unlucky to peak at #11. David Guetta is also unlucky that ARIA are not acknowledging his song "Say My Name", which probably should have debuted around #60-#70 this week but nobody came. Oh and for some reason ARIA are just now counting Billie Eilish's EP, which has been in the NZ top 40 nearly all year and probably should have had similar chart success here. Eminem looks to continue his reign but there should be a handful of strong new entries for Dead Letter Circus, Thundamentals, Josh Groban & Slash. Edited September 26, 20186 yr by Dircadirca

September 26, 20186 yr Is there literally NOTHING OUT and that’s what warranted Shape Of You to come back to the top 50?
September 26, 20186 yr Author Is there literally NOTHING OUT and that’s what warranted Shape Of You to come back to the top 50? Kind of. It's also kind of disingenuous because Tyga's "Taste" has been omitted from the chart for no reason (this is actually the 4th time that Shape Of You has held a top 50 spot because of it). I've also recently learnt that ARIA doesn't get Spotify's Thursday data in time (which is why Eminem's "Killshot" just missed the top 100 this week), and Shape had a pretty hefty loss of 8000 plays on Spotify on Thursday, so I'm willing to bet an 'accurate' chart would have it kept out even if Tyga was still missing. It SHOULD be dead and buried for the time being though, it's bleeding streams heavily this week for some reason. If only "Perfect" showed any signs of going away as well <_<

While not riding on a huge lead, in the context of the more static charts of late, George Ezra is pretty safely at #1 for a second week with "Shotgun" which is riding huge digital sales thanks in no small part to a TV commercial that it's featured on. Benny Blanco narrowly holds the top spot on streaming despite Kanye West being #1 on Spotify all week, returning to #2 in the process. The continued ascent of "Happier" means that all four of Marshmello's top 10 hits have peaked between #4 & #6. New in the top 10 is the extremely questionable cash grab release 'collaboration' between Lil Peep & XXXTENTACION, the first time Lil Peep has ever appeared on the ARIA Charts. Meanwhile the chart run for "Not Afraid" back in the day will have you note that Eminem is quite a fan of #10, but oddly enough he's been #11 three weeks in a row now, as replacing "Lucky You" as his highest is "Killshot". I forgot to mention last week that Dynoro's "In My Mind" (which is now top 20) has outpeaked the Ivan Gough & Feenixpawl version from 2012 which peaked at #29. XXXTENTACION isn't the only artist with a dodgy background debuting this week because Tyga...yeah never mind, but Kodak Black makes his ARIA Chart debut as well alongside Gucci Mane & Bruno Mars. I believe it's the first time Gucci Mane has had a lead credit on a chart entry. The Chainsmokers have also been pushed hard by Hot Hits Australia on Spotify but since a lot of that is from a vertical video at the top of the playlist, they only just scrape the top 50 with their song that is now top 10 on Spotify. It also means that Kelsea Ballerini scores a top 50 hit before Morgan Evans can, largely because he hasn't found favour with the playlists yet. On a positive note of chart accuracy, last week's mistakes have been fixed for this week, and now David Guetta & Dua Lipa have charted as they should have last week. Avril Lavigne also returns to the chart for the first time since I believe "Rock N Roll", coincidentally the same week a song called "I'm With You" debuts. A curiosity is that because Australian radio is trying really hard to pretend that rap music does not exist at all, Eminem holds #1 for a 4th week in a row, yet to reach top 40 airplay for any tracks on "Kamikaze". Drake only narrowly holds us off from the quinella of white. Highest debut of the week goes to Slash who has been rather consistent with solo albums this decade, this being his 4th to reach the top 5. Of course I'm more inclined to say the important news is the big entry for America's hardest working boy band BROCKHAMPTON. They've been building quite a bit of fanfare here ever since the release of "SATURATION II" started getting them national airplay, "SWEET" was voted by triple j listeners as the 11th best song of 2017 (and for that matter, 2nd best not from Australia or New Zealand). Their newest album "iridescence" was the 3rd most streamed album this week and reaches #6 overall. On the topic of the triple j poll, one of the 8 (there were 3 Gang Of Youths songs in the top 10) artists to beat BROCKHAMPTON were Thundamentals with their song "Sally". Despite a usual rate of 1 new album every 3 years, it's taken them only 18 months to follow up their last album, which may have resulted in less hype as they enter at #9, a bit of a far cry from their last two albums that debuted in the top 3. Also having slipped off a bit is Brisbane's Dead Letter Circus. They're notably tied with the Backstreet Boys for the 2nd most albums to peak at #2 without having a #1 album, as their first 3 studio albums all did so (Radiohead are far ahead with 6 #2 albums), a lot of those instances were badly timed with competition, but now it looks like #1 may be eternally out of reach as they only debut at #10 with their self-titled 4th album, which has had some great singles I must say. Next week we'll have the fall out from the country's two biggest sporting events on the weekend, the AFL & NRL Grand Finals. They probably won't impact the singles chart except that Spotify numbers have notably dropped about 20% over the weekend, which is probably only good news for Tom Walker. Performing artists Jimmy Barnes & Gang Of Youths should have good boosts, while there are new releases for former multi-#1 artists John Butler Trio & The Living End, and of course Lil Wayne has "Tha Carter V".

At The Disco 50 32 05 02 FLOW STATE Tash Sultana Stagnant times at the top of the singles chart. George Ezra safely has a 3rd week and very likely the 4th week incoming as well. Benny Blanco enters the pantheon of long running #2 hits with "eastside" now running up for the 6th non-consecutive week. Marshmello gets his 4th top 5 hit with his 4th top 10 hit, "Happier" which also wedges in-between the #4 & #6 peaks of Bastille's first two top 10 hits. Khalid gets his 7th top 10 hit this week with "Better", while Loud Luxury are also still climbing with "Body" now in the top 10. DJ Snake simultaneously has the highest top 50 entry and top 100 debut with "Taki Taki", which is Ozuna's first ever ARIA Charts entry I believe. Lil Wayne's new album also impacts the top 50 with two entries (though "Don't Cry" wouldn't be in if there weren't excluded songs, as usual with the #50 song). Alesso also creeps into the top 50 with "Remedy" on the same week it had its video taken off Hot Hits Australia & Today's Top Hits, making it look quite auspicious as it reaches a new peak while losing a quarter of its Spotify plays. A particularly curious exclusion this week is "Shallow" which was #3 on the Digital Tracks chart, it hasn't quite made the same streaming impact here as in the UK but I suspect it should safely be in the top 50. Perhaps next week with the rest of the soundtrack out. This week's album chart is firmly not dictated by the youth, but several older demographics. Reaching #1 is The John Butler Trio, which is something of a curiosity because their last album (which had a top 50 peaking lead single) missed the #1 spot early in 2015 due to hype around an INXS biopic. I assume the entire population of Byron Bay bought a copy. Prior to this, John Butler and his cycling band mates had quite a run with 3 consecutive #1 albums that all sold very well in the long run. Next up we have Cher with her very timely release of ABBA covers. It can't quite reach the top like the movie soundtrack she contributed to, and incidentally it's her highest chart position since another soundtrack where she was credited, "Burlesque" back at the start of the decade. Her 1989 album "Heart Of Stone" did reach #1. Next up we've got The Living End, who have had two #1 albums, about 20 & 10 years ago respectively. All 8 of their studio albums have reached the top 10 and this is a slight improvement on their last album which peaked at #4. Lil Wayne on the other hand, is hitting new heights with "Tha Carter V", his highest album chart peak to date, just ahead of his other top 10 album, "Tha Carter IV". Anthony Fantano continues to release albums under Logic's name, also getting a 2nd top 10 and new high peak with "YSIV". Jimmy Barnes performed at the AFL Grand Final last week, and while most international readers will know him best as the giant cowboy screaming in the clouds in that song with Alex Cameron and some other guy, Australia knows him best as the lead singer of Cold Chisel. The band's Best Of set from 2011 has a huge jump to #5, and Jimmy's more recent album release that contains many versions of Chisel tracks among other things also has a big boost to #11. I assume NRL Grand Final viewers were too furious that a non-dinosaur band in Gang Of Youths were performing so their boost isn't quite as big. Next week will be the ultimate battle of white people, as twenty one pilots will go head to head with the "A Star Is Born" soundtrack.

It's 4 weeks now for "Shotgun" with no clear challenge just yet. This week's "Happier" update is that it has now reached #4 which equals both Marshmello & Bastille's highest prior peaks ("FRIENDS" and "Pompeii"). Though it seemed like it wasn't even intended to be pushed to Australia, Dynoro is doing just fine with "In My Mind" in the top 10 at #7. I also have to note Loud Luxury moving up to #8 despite having thus far peaked at #18 on Spotify. Just missing a top 10 debut is Halsey, who just yesterday vertical video'd her way to #1 on Spotify so she might get there next week. It's already her highest charting entry that doesn't have some dude's name attached to it in front of hers. Speaking of which, The Chainsmokers are now in the top 20 with their song that is featured with 6 placings across 3 of the most popular Spotify playlists in this country. The elephant in the room is the "A Star Is Born" soundtrack which impacts the chart this week and will probably make an even bigger splash as the movie just opened here. "Shallow" is #25 this week but it's now #1 on iTunes and making strides on streaming. It may well be a #1 hit in the making. The Rita Ora song I still struggle to remember and the Eminem song I wish I could forget both enter the top 40, while Lauv finally gets his 2nd entry in the top 50, Morgan Evans finally gets his 1st, and the worst band in the world continue to torment me with their existence. For the second week in a row, the best new entry by a mile is the one that features Kendrick Lamar, also Bobby Shmurda gets his first ever chart entry because Australia just wasn't ready for his viral smash. When I thought it might be a close battle for #1 on the album chart, it was when I hadn't realised that "A Star Is Born" wasn't even out yet here. So while they've missed the top spot in the US and UK, Australia, where they charted 1 song for 1 week this year has been most kind to twenty one pilots netting them a #1 debut, beating out all competition by a nearly 3:1 ratio. In the end "A Star Is Born" only lands at #3 but my extremely not ambitious prediction is that it will have some staying power and this won't be its peak. They're the only top 20 debuts so much of the top end of the chart this week is even more ancient than usual. A promo tour brings Panic! At The Disco up quite a bit. The 3rd highest debut this week is the 3rd album from Australian band Last Dinosaurs who I quite like, though it's their lowest charting album to date. For next week's highest debut, it'll be the battle of young & old with new releases from Morgan Evans & Paul Kelly.

"Shotgun" scores a 5th week at #1 but it's looking to be its last. Perhaps sooner than expected, "A Star Is Born" has completely taken the country by storm, and now it's looking like "Shallow" will very safely take the top spot next week. Lady Gaga's last #1 hit was "Born This Way" in 2011. Nothing in the top 13 moves more than 1 place from last week, but with that we do see Halsey's "Without Me" becoming her first solo top 10 hit. It's currently #1 on Spotify but about 20% of her streams are coming from a vertical video and sales have really dropped off so it's hard to say how much higher she can get. The highest debut this week is "ZEZE", giving Kodak Black his 2nd chart entry just a month after his first. Rita Ora reaches the top 20 with "Let You Love Me", which is a familiar height for her, as "Your Song", "Anywhere" & "For You" also reached it, but none of them hit the top 10. It's not looking like this single will change things. Little Mix's new single debuts at #23 which is pretty typical of them as they never have the same instant hype as they do in the UK. It's still gaining traction on streaming but it doesn't look like it will keep climbing the chart just yet. "MIA" gives Bad Bunny his first lead artist chart entry. Also for those whom it may concern, Ava Max's "Sweet But Psycho is #101 this week so it should debut next week. However, there's a heightened level of uncertainty to next week's chart. Just this morning, ARIA announced a change to chart calculation with greater weight given to paid streams as opposed to free streams. I assume it will be similar to the UK chart formula, but it will pretty much be impossible to tell. Yet again there's a #1 debut on the album chart. Australian music legend Paul Kelly surprisingly only scored his first #1 album last year with his very successful "Life Is Fine" album. He's followed it up speedily and now notches up a second #1 album. It's just Australian artists impacting the top 10 this week. Canberra-based rock band Hands Like Houses score their 2nd top 10 peak, but a new high of #4 with their 4th album. Australia's other contributor to the current wave of pop country, Morgan Evans also hits a new high of #5 with his 2nd album. There's also a big re-entry courtesy of the 20th anniversary of Powderfinger's 3rd album "Internationalist". Buoyed by excellent singles like "The Day You Come" and "Passenger", it set them in stone as the biggest band in the country for many years to come. For reasons I can only ascertain as Newscorp readers listening to shitty reggae to own the libs, local tools Sticky Fingers' debut album returns to the top 50 for the first time since it first debuted in 2013. Next week's album chart proves to be quite a contest. "A Star Is Born"'s soundtrack could vault to the top spot, but it does face strong competition from former multi-#1 scorers, Disturbed, RUFUS DU SOL, and the latest triple j Like A Version compilation.

I assume they're taking the UK ratio but I don't really know. What I do now know is that streaming's influence over the chart doesn't seem overly different, though it might be just a little less, it's hard to tell because the chart is cluttered with "A Star Is Born" tracks that aren't getting strong streams yet. There's been one exception which is "Shallow", which reaches #1 this week, giving Lady Gaga her 4th #1 hit following "Just Dance", "Poker Face" and "Born This Way". It nearly wasn't #1 though because ARIA seemingly aren't counting its Apple streams so George Ezra nearly erroneously retained the top spot. For the time being, "Shallow" should safely be #1 even with this disadvantage. Australia are showing wild creativity with their music listening, as they slowly move on from listening to the Halsey & Khalid song and start listening to the Halsey & Khalid songs, as both score new top 10 peaks this week. Also impacting the top 10 is Billie Eilish, debuting right at #10 giving her a 2nd top 10 hit following "lovely" which reached #5 in its only week in the top 10. She has soemthing in common with the next debut in that they have vertical videos inflating their Spotify positions. "Shallow" was #4 on Spotify the other day but was actually getting the most chart eligible streams, because evidently people are very happy with Hot Hits Australia for all their music needs. Nonetheless it's a #13 debut for Post Malone & Swae Lee which looks to climb, not just because recent tour announcements have seen a big boost for all of Post Malone's songs on Spotify lately, "rockstar" is back in the top 50! Lady Gaga has 2 more debuts in the top 50, while Khalid's new EP nets yet another entry for him, "Suncity" is however the first time in the chart for Empress Of. BLACKPINK aren't credited but they do appear on Dua Lipa's new single which is their first top 50 entry, having reached the top 100 with their EP earlier this year. Several long chart runners drop out this week for the first time ever, possibly owing to the new formula, "Thunder", "Havana" & "These Days". There was no shortage of albums piquing the public's interest this week. There are 7 debuts in the top 10, however none of them are #1 because the "A Star Is Born" soundtrack easily gets there. This is Lady Gaga's 3rd #1 album following "The Fame Monster" and "Born This Way", having reached #2 with her 2 studio albums of original material that followed. Being blocked from the top spot in this process is RUFUS DU SOL, which is a bit unfortunate for them because their first two albums (back when they were just called RUFUS) debuted at #1 so this is their first to miss out. Also relatively unlucky is Disturbed who also have 2 #1 albums, "Indestructible" back in 2008 and "Immortalized" which both debuted at #1 in 2015 and returned to #1 in 2016 when people were getting way too enthusiastic about that ridiculous Simon & Garfunkel cover...of which a live version is included on this new album. Disturbed aren't new to bad release weeks though, I think their highest weekly sales came with their 2010 album which ended up at #2 because Katy Perry released the same week. Moving on we've got the "Bohemian Rhapsody" soundtrack album which may climb just like "A Star Is Born" because the movie is still yet to come out here (I think it comes out tomorrow). Ending a #1 stream far more unceremoniously is the triple j Like A Version series, which following 5 years in a row of #1 debuts, only lands at #6. The chart fortunes of the compilations both in debut and proceeding weeks varies greatly, but this is the 9th in a row to reach the top 10. Local country singer Troy Cassar-Daley has a Greatest Hits set debut at #7 as his 5th top 10. I'm sure the tracklisting is appropriate but I can't comment because I don't think he's ever had a lead artist singles chart entry. Getting his first top 10 is Khalid, whose first album has been hovering around the top 50 for over a year, but only peaked at #13. Oh and Greta Van Fleet are here too. This hectic influx of new arrivals pushes both Drake & The Greatest Showman out of the top 10 for the first time, but fans of equilibrium will be thrilled to know that Ed Sheeran is only down to a new low of #8. Next week's album chart will be considerably less busy at the top end I imagine, I'm not sure if there will be any top 10 debuts, though I could see Robyn & Gang Of Youths figuring somewhere among it.

Not that it needed it as there is no new competition coming along just yet. Okay well there is the new Ariana Grande but I suspect she won't be able to get to #1 right away due to her mid-week release. Halsey climbs into the top 5 with "Without Me", while Post Malone scores his 6th top 10 hit via "Sunflower". P!nk's cover of "A Million Dreams" enters the top 30 largely thanks to digital sales where it is #2, notably the original track from The Greatest Showman never charted. Ava Max is also new in the top 50 and it's not just due to streaming as digital sales are picking up too. There's no change on the album chart except it gets even more soundtracky as "Bohemian Rhapsody"'s soundtrack reaches #2, where it will probably be stuck even with the movie release because "A Star Is Born" is miles ahead. Taylor Swift's Australian tour takes her latest album to #4, long after all the singles have left the chart. The highest new entry is an MTV Unplugged set from Gang Of Youths, a bit over a year after their 2nd studio album hit #1, which is still charting. Bocelli gets his 7th top 10 album and helps to push "Divide" to a further new low of #10, we'll have to see if people will be so on the ball to make it a popular Christmas gift or if it will finally leave the top 10 soon. Robyn debuts in the top 20 which is her first solo album to make the top 50 at all, having only previously done so with her Royksopp collaboration. Next week we've got new entries coming from Matt Corby, The Prodigy & Barbra Streisand, all of which have hit #1 in the past.

I mean it always is but I'm fairly certain that it's inaccurate in an all new way. Ariana Grande's new single "thank u, next" debuted at #1 in the US & UK this week but only makes #2 here. I am fairly certain that the reason this happened is that ARIA don't treat first week streaming correctly. As we know, Thursday data on Spotify comes in pretty late, but unlike the UK, it's not clear what ARIA does to compensate this. They clearly do something because once songs aren't new, there isn't a striking error. If the data were properly parsed, I think Ariana would have debuted at #1 for the second time this year so Lady Gaga gets a 3rd week at #1. In the grand scheme of things, this isn't super important though because Ariana Grande will likely be #1 next week. Otherwise this week, the public have settled into summer slowdown because nearly every song in the top 30 only moves a few spots at most, and there are only 3 debuts in the top 100. There is on the other hand, quite a lot of Queen, with "Bohemian Rhapsody" back in the top 50 for the first time since 1992, and half a dozen other tracks re-enter for them as well. I find it noteworthy that "We Will Rock You" is always the 2nd best selling Queen song on iTunes but it's only 7th highest here due to lower streams. "A Star Is Born"'s monopoly supposedly is maintained for 3 weeks as it's also #1 on the album chart. The Queen soundtrack is starting to pose a serious threat however and could well overtake it next week. The highest debut comes from Matt Corby, who rose to fame as runner up on Australian Idol back in 2007, but strayed far from that lane with his music and scored a #1 album 2 years ago. This time around he just hits #4. Another former #1 artist, Barbra Streisand lands at #7. The massive elephant in the room this week is King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard. You might remember them for how often I brought them up last year as they released 5 different albums in 2017. By the work of magic, they have gone and gained 5 new debuts in 2018 as they've reissued several older albums on vinyl (though the last one is a 9-track EP), so their first 4 albums, which were the only albums of theirs that didn't reach the ARIA Chart (excluding last year's "Polygondwanaland" which was released for free and is co-owned by me), all debut in the top 15 this week. Though not needed, they assist in pushing Ed Sheeran's "Divide" down to #16, the first time it's ever been out of the top 10, though supposedly there has been some error relating to physical sales data so that might not be accurate either. While lamenting the dumpster fire of our charts, look forward to seeing who comes in what order with new albums from Muse, Imagine Dragons, Architects & Ziggy Alberts vying to impact the top 10.
November 15, 20186 yr Author Yep it has been since around 2009-2010. Prior to that it was Sat-Fri but they changed it because retailers tended to put new albums on sale on Friday. In 2008 Kings of Leon & Metallica debuted in the top 10 with 1 day of sales before climbing to #1 the week they were supposed to impact.
November 16, 20186 yr I'd guess that New Zealand has the same issue with first-week streaming, based on how many songs climb in their second week and 'thank u, next' debuted at #2 there too!
November 16, 20186 yr Author Yeah, given how much Spotify rules the roost there, with full data Ariana should absolutely have been #1. At least NZ has the 'excuse' that their chart is published in the late afternoon on Friday so that data almost always hasn't even been published yet by the time the chart is out.
