Interesting they considered New Orders highest NE a RE at 10! Were the sales combined with the 1983 version?

I didn't notice that. In those days, you could only buy a single if it was in the shops. I doubt if any of the shops whose sales counted towards the chart would have had the 1983 version on their shelves so that chart position would have been the remix only.

  • So many songs I like from from 1985 just from looking at the top 10 singles of the year. Tarzan Boy is probably my favourite of the top 10 hits from the year!

Probably the multiple episodes a night they're showing rather than once a week. The U brand is all BBC owned anyway

Not that I've seen. It's also on at 9am too but it's the same episodes each day. 1999 is due to start imminently

I think it was counted - didn't it have the original version as part of the CD single? I certainly have a CD edition containing all of the versions. Checks: yes 700,000 the original 12" version, so the subsequent multi-versions took over a million combined, it says on wikipedia.

That edition of TOTP had 3 absolutely awful tracks, oops! Plus 4 classics.... Talk about extreme!

That was a decent episode. Some of my highlights were obviously the fantastic new no1 from the wonderful Fairground Attraction, an absolute classic that still gets played to this day. Pity Simon Mayo wasn't 100% accurate saying they won't be 1 hit wonders - they only got one more top 40 hit and 2 top 75 hits which for the talent of the lead singer seems not a lot. The other great songs were Prefab Sprout & The Adventures. I'd never heard of either bands but heard both songs a lot which is a good sign and why I watch the old totps.

Haven't heard the new Kylie there thought her next one was Locamotion.

Edited by Steve201

Broken Land by The Adventures is a fantastic song. It would be their only top 40 hit. The King Of Rock'n' Roll is a good one as well and Prefab Sprout's biggest hit single. I think the next Kylie single after this one will be The Locomotion.

They were combined- it's the only way it's position on the Gallup end of decade chart can be explained. It was actually always available and a consistent seller in the intervening years- it was the 391st best seller of 1985, 425th the year after and 451st in 1987 though we're only talking around 15k a year for those positions.

Hi '80s friends,

Anyone of you have TOTP june 05, 11, 25 1987 in original quality to trade? I was traveling overseas last march ;/

Another enjoyable episode here - good to here Prefab Sprout live in the studio and the Aztec Camera song is fab and an absolute classic - made for radio wondefulness lol. Scritti Politi return to the top 40 again and this episode made me take notice of the 3 mentioned bands and the fact they had been having hits since the start of he decade but we're having their biggest hit this late in the decade all of a sudden for me anyway. Poor no1 but always good to see Billy Bragg do well.

Really like the Heart power ballad, a classic now isn't it?! Also good to see Scritti Politti back for the first time in a while and Hot House Flowers is a good record!

Last week BBC4 showed the episodes for 9th and 16th June. This week they are showing 30th June and 7th July. What happened to the one for 23rd June? It was presented by Nicky Campbell and Mark Goodier. There's no one dodgy on the list of performers so why isn't it being shown?

I wonder why that is? Must tweet them?!!

Is tonights Janice Longs final episode? She hasn't Presented in ages, maybe since 1987!?

Just checked there on the twitter feed myself and a few others on here follow and they said it was skipped because the quality of the archive footage wasn't good enough quality to broadcast live(audio issues).

There's some clips online by all accounts.

Edited by Steve201

OK,I'll look for the performances on youtube. UB40 & Chrissie Hynde and Eurythmics were both in the studio that week.

Janice Long will be back on 4th August but I can't see her listed beyond that.

Sad to see Janice going and by the end of this year Peter Powell and Simon Bates as well - all long running legends on the show making way for the 90s crew.

Didn't think we would have the Eurythmics back on totp as they were past their peak by 1988!

This episode was shot in a corridor showing old clips and videos due to an asbestos scare just in case you were wondering why Nicky Campbell looks a bit scared and Peter Powell has responded to the situation by being so cold he wears a cricket jumper in mid June. He took it off later anyway!

Not much of note this week apart from the wonderful Aztec Camera song which gets better with each play. Anyone notice the future famous face in the Voyage Voyage video?

Edited by Steve201

I was wondering why the studio wasn't used for that episode.

I've had another look at the video for Voyage Voyage. There is no one obvious I can spot. Two of them look like Mark Benton and Nadia Sawalha.

Decent episode that - the wonderful performance in studio by Morrissey and Maxi Priest are the clear highlights. Also that first chart breaker was a bit dire!!

Feels like Wet Wet Wet have been no1 for ever and I've a bad feeling the awful Doctorin the Tardis will replace it....

Terrible No1 the original soundtrack sounds a lot better than this House make up!! Suppose it's all a bit of fun and I've learned that every year in the 70s/80s there's a novelty record in the middle of the year that lands at the top spot, not just at Xmas like nowadays. Good show though overall - we got to see that performance of 'I Owe You Nothing by Bros and The Sisters of Mercy & Erasure were nice additions!!
