Right now I'd go:

1. Australia

2. Sweden

3. Denmark (this is really atmospheric and stands out a lot, amazed it's so low in the odds but then I guess it's a bit 90s/00s Eurovision!)

4. Portugal

5. Finland

6. Cyprus

They're the clear standouts for me right now. Everything else needs to grow and there are still quite a lot I haven't listened to.

I've heard all but about five of the entries now and these are the ones that currently stand out to me (as in I've added them into my main weekly top 50 playlist):

1. Australia

2. Sweden

3. Denmark

4. Ireland (oops, apparently)

5. Portugal

6. Finland

7. France

8. Cyprus

9. The Netherlands

10. Israel

11. Germany

12. Lithuania

Storm is growing on me too and I can't decide whether I love or hate Estonia...it's no La Voix for me but I'm sure the live performance will sway me (I've not watched the national final performance of it). Macedonia, Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Romania, Azerbaijan, Belgium and Poland are all decent too.

I think people are sleeping on the UK's chances

Having heard the songs, I think it will go like this:

1. Israel

2. Bulgaria

3. UK, with an outside shot at winning

4. Greece

5. Violin man

Estonia/Slovenia/Romania are a pretty great top 3 although two of them seem doomed. Par for the course I guess.
I'm surprised you like Slovenia bc I thought it would be everything you hate about pop music

lolol UK winning with that nothing-y song

Based on the breakdowns? Normally, yes, that sort of thing is in songs devoid of energy, but she's very charismatic as a performer and the song is so interesting that it really works for once.

I've finally heard them all tonight and here I provide my full rankings, which giant paragraphs of commentary that I don't expect anyone to read to allow me to have my say on them all without having to comment on each individual national thread:

03 | http://esc.gerbear.com/flags/ee.png Estonia: Elina Nechayeva - La Forza

Partly due to overplay of Toy and partly due to how much I've been hammering Fuego, the whisker that seperates my top 2 places Cyprus at the top of my ranking. It's pretty much Rob my numbers, catchy pop with a really strong hook, a drop, fun European ethnic elements, sex appeal in abundance. It's great to have them back to the top 6 years after my favourite Eurovision entry ever in La La Love. Israel are a close second, the song is still the most fun track of the year, so unbelievably instant and fresh for Eurovision, it's going to be so exciting to see what they bring staging wise. And completing my runaway top 3 is Estonia, which is likely only down to the fact it doesn't have the replay factor of the former two - as a stand alone entry, however, it's absolutely stunning, her vocals are incredible, it really moves me for a genre I'm not always 100% on and the staging really elevates that. Finland is another undeniable huge pop track fronted by the hugely likeable Saara Aalto, I can't see this breaking past any of the top 3 but it does what it intends to at a very high standard. Sweden then round off the top 5 with a song I've also known for a lot longer than most of these tracks but I can't see the slick nature of this whole package suffering much come May, my favourite entry of theirs since Mans Zelmerlow for sure and I really like Benjamin as a personality too, very likeable.

Further into my top 10, I have Azerbaijan which is growing on me quickly. It's not too dissimilar to Saara's Monsters and I can see it potentially overtaking it in my rankings in time. I love the energy it brings, with a sense of euphoria towards the end and it oozes a real positive nature to me - another hugely strong female pop song in a year where the girls are really bringing it! Czech Republic was the 2018 track I heard and it's comfortably their best ever. It lacks a little bit of polish compared to the songs above it just slightly with the tinny trumpet breakdown and it pales EVER SO SLIGHTLY in comparison to Benjamin for me in how slick it all feels as I think Benjamin does it a bit better. But they've both delivered 9/10 pop tracks so I can't complain. Lithuania is one that may well have benefitted from me knowing it for a month longer than most of these but it's a really beautiful ballad for me in a very understated manner. The message it conveys is really lovely and her tone helps to round off a rousing track for me. Australia is another strong female uptempo, one of which I feel I may like even more if it wasn't for the previous tracks like Saara's and Aisel's which I do feel are stronger and provoke more of a reaction from me. Jessica's voice doesn't stand out as much for me but it's hard not to like this track, much like Azerbaijan, there's a real positive pop stamp on this which always strikes a chord with me musically. Finally, one I feel breaks the mould for me somewhat, outside of these typical pop bops, is Belarus at #10 - there's a real feel of Harry Styles in this for me and I find it dramatic in all of the right ways. Bearing in mind, I've only heard a lot of these songs once or twice, this is definitely one that's stuck in my head. The chorus and the drama of it was quite fantastic to me and I'd like to see it beat the predictions I've seen for it where it's perhaps expected to not qualify.

As we hit #11, we reach a range of 7.5/10 for me, a rating which denotes that it's on the brink of being fantastic but just missing that something. And that's most notably the case with my #11 and #12 which I'm itching to love more than I actually do. Macedonia's track is really frustrating to me, I love love LOVE the chorus, it's giving me Freemasons, with definite feels of Heartbreak Make Me A Dancer mixed with a touch of Xenomania. But it feels really mismatched with the reggae verses which aren't as strong for me and the track as a whole doesn't fully work which is really annoying when I find it's got such potential in certain areas to give me something amazing. Malta isn't mismatched but it frustratingly never feels like it's allowed to have its moment until the last chorus. The chorus is melodically strong but because it casually phases itself in from the verse, it loses impact. It's still a good pop song and as a package, I feel like it could work at Eurovision. France definitely isn't in the same boat, it's a fully realised track, very pleasant and minimalist in a lot of ways. I actually wouldn't expect to like the song as much as I do but it's got a lot of charm to it and while I don't love it, it's definitely giving me something and I enjoy it. Moldova is an odd one. On paper, I feel like I should love this and I would be expected to. I adore the brass instrumental that it's in it, which is a feature of many Eurovision songs I like over the years, like Opa and Zaleilah. It's the sort of thing I love being brought to Eurovision and I can't wait to see it performed so I'm delighted it's been entered, I'm just not sure how actually strong it is as it's taken a couple of listens to remember any particular hook, it just left me with the memory of "oh, I really like the instrumental". I can see it growing hugely and being a highlight of Eurovision live though. Poland are bringing the Spotify 'Grab The Moment' of the year but I feel it's lacking a real hook to grab onto which is what made Norway's track work better than this does. Even given that though, I think it's going to be a really fun song to have at Eurovision, it stands alone in what it's trying to achieve as there's nothing else like this, it's very feel good and I can see it growing, it just doesn't impact HUGELY on first listen.

Austria's track is very professional and could work in or outside of this contest which I imagine will work its advantage, particularly with jurors. It leaves me feeling the same way I feel with John Legend or Rag N Bone Man tracks in that they're very undeniably well done but it's a tad too MOR for my personal tastes to really grow to like much more than I do now. Switzerland also feels professional and actually I feel similarly towards it as I do with Austria. I don't think there's anything I'd say is "lacking" or sounds unprofessional, it's fully realised and is a good track, it just simply doesn't do more than a 7/10 for me. I do think it's good though and it's a shame they won't qualify with another impressive effort from them that doesn't just sound like it was created for Eurovision, which I always respect. Bulgaria is another case of "I think this could grow" but potentially it was my expectations given the hype, as well as their least two entries on top of that, that led to me feeling a bit underwhelmed. It's got all the ingredients of something that could be massive but I never feel like it reaches that and the vocals doesn't really do a great deal for me, I'm not sure how well they mesh. I like the production and the general tone of it but while I think it's got strong elements to it, there's still something that levels me feeling not totally complete with it and it feels a little like it's still in demo stage before becoming something really huge. Germany is another case of doing what it's trying to do with ease, it's classy, it's really quite lovely but it doesn't leave me feeling like something I'd necessarily want to return to with excitement which is all that's holding it back but I certainly can't fault it on an emotional level and this is a vast improvement on their last few years and something they can be proud of. Lovely song that may rise for me. Belgium is all chorus for me, the rest I can give or take, but the chorus has been stuck in my head for the past few years so beyond something that is a bit TOO minimal for me, it does have a strong hook which I'll always appreciate.

Slovenia is sonically very interesting and has definite potential to rise but I don't enjoy it as much as I want to. I like that it does something different and it's unique but ultimately I do find it a bit messy. Rather that than dull though! Denmark is another that falls under the category of "nearly but not quite" but not quite as convincingly as the likes of Montenegro and Malta. It has the markings of something that could be epic but leaves me feeling a bit like how I felt with Roger Pontare's "Himmel Och Hav". I like the tribal kind of feel to it but it's not as anthemic as it wants to be and never builds to anything remarkable so it leaves me hanging at a feeling of underwhelmed. There's plenty they could do with this though that would elevate it so it's got definite potential. Ukraine have definitely brought a good and competitive track with Under The Ladder but I don't think the problem with this for me is mostly the song, but more his vocal. There's something about his tone, delivery and pronunciation that makes me find this track quite annoying along with the "oh oh oh" hook which could be more than it is in my eyes. But I don't think it's so much "lacking" like other tracks, there's just things about it that put me off wanting to listen more. Russia has fallen significantly for me, it was initially high for similar reasons to Belgium in that I had the chorus stuck in my head but after hearing the song as a whole again, it is just the chorus that works for me and there's more wrong with it than Belgium. I feel harsh criticising someone's English when it's not their first language because I can't speak a word of Russian but her pronunciation really really bothers me and doesn't make anything about this feel natural. It's a lot stronger than her 2017 song though and it does boast a strong chorus hook. Greece is an interesting one, there's elements to it that I like and it's ethnic vibe is something I enjoy, but the vocal effect on it is a bit odd and I don't get the lift in the chorus that I want. For some, I imagine this will massively strike a chord but it's a tad flat for me even though it's sonically quite interesting. I'm not sure how it'll work at Eurovision.

Latvia is another that I want to like more than I do, I always enjoy songs that have that Bond touch to them and I do somewhat enjoy this, it just doesn't really go anywhere to particularly excite me. United Kingdom is another nice enough song, it just lacks even more than it did at its national final. The chorus now has even less power and while I think it's nice and quite catchy, it is only skipping being "forgettable" for me because I was invested in the UK national selection. I enjoy the progression of Armenia and I think it leads itself well to a moment at Eurovision but I don't think it really lends itself to a riveting studio listen for me. Now, Hungary, I actually enjoy when rock is brought to Eurovision a lot of the time, it stands out well when it's done well. I think, to an extent, this is at its best when they're going hell for leather in the final minute and I like it most at that stage, but as an entire package, it's not wowing me or smashing it for its genre in my opinion. Serbia's pro's and cons are kinda similar - I like that it seems like something that could've been sent in 2005 in a "ah, this is what I like about Eurovision" kind of way but then that's also why I don't enjoy it, because it's got a bit of a dated nature and for me, it doesn't really go anywhere very enthralling that grabs me.

I'm a bit tired of writing now, so San Marino, somewhat catchy and I do like the chorus, but as often with them, it sounds very demo-ish and even though there's 12 songs I like less than this, this is probably sounds the cheapest and weakest of all. Portugal's track is sweet and definitely has something to it in a London Grammar sense that I like but in terms of being instant, which is what Eurovision is ultimately about, it didn't grab me with its beauty in a way even close to Lithuania for comparisons sake. Ireland, for yet another year, is nice but I'm tired of nice. Romania... disappointing for a country that so often brings something exciting. There's a good 30 seconds of this when it brings elements of a 90s rock power ballad but it's so disjointed that I can't even properly appreciate it. Albania, I've played several times and I'm struggling to think of anything memorable about it so that says a fair amount but I know I find it "okay" when I hear it.

Norway is irritating me on many levels. One of them is that I'm thinking "I've got a feeling I'm going to end up really liking this" because for all of its faults, of which there are MANY of them, it's catchy as hell, particularly the instrumental sections which are ingrained in my head already. But, god, I hate him even more than I did when performing Fairytale, smug as f***. And the lyrics don't do anything to change that feel, infact they make it worse. Horribly patronising and childish and on the one hand I loathe it, but in the same sense, I can't deny it's made more of an impression on me than many so... fair play, I guess. Italy and Montenegro can both fall under a similar category of being okay but again, I don't really remember anything about it when it's over. Spain is way too f***ing twee for me, I just want the two of them to break up. PDA makes me slightly uncomfortable anyway but this is done in such a "rammed down your throat" way, it's hard not to even want to like this even though I don't outright hate it. Croatia, I may be being slightly harsh on, but when I'm stanning for so many big female pop songs, this feels even more piss weak and uninteresting than it probably is but right now, I'm just finding it boring and I can't imagine it doing encouraging anything exciting on a stage.

43 | http://esc.gerbear.com/flags/nl.png Netherlands: Waylon - Outlaw in 'Em

Georgia, another case of forgettable which could fall into the same category as Montenegro & Italy, only it makes even less of an impression on me. And then finally, the only two songs I outright dislike and thankfully, I don't think either will be providing me a Jamala moment. Least of all Iceland, which should rightfully finish rock bottom of its semi, the lyrics are just ridiculous and I think even X Factor would be ashamed to let this touch their winners single songbook. It's so cliché in a way that even a Westlife fan can't enjoy, it's just so far from moving or well done or even well produced. Finally, Netherlands, well if this is your sort of thing it's not bad, but it's so far removed from my sort of thing that I hate it and I can't see anything changing that. It's just... a million miles away from my cup of tea, from the twang, to the style, to the genre, to the fact it doesn't belong in Europe or this decade.
