Haha! You totally took the words out of my mouth about that Lithuanian entry! I'd actually forgotten it existed, it was so BLAND and forgettable. How it made the final I don't know.

Also that DJ Bobo entry was the favourite to win in 2007 prior to the contest - the only time I can think of that the favourite crashed out in the semi - but probably highlights what a bad contest that really was. (Can I remind you of "Water" for a moment?) - poor Verka! Though I actually really appreciate "Molitva" these days too.

Martina was so charismatic though <3

I love me some Le Grand Soir. I still remember playing that song on a cassette during the summer of 2005

I can't disagree with any of those.

Certainly disliked "Keep The Faith" last year. Didn't she have a hissy fit on social media after they failed to qualify?

I still regularly listen to (the studio version of) Jugarem A estimar-nos, really love it. It reminds me of being at college so I must have been spamming the song a lot at the time, I think the chorus is pretty melodic!

Don't care for any of those other four. 2002 was indeed pretty bad, in an overall bland way. I remember only really liking seven songs that year and of those I probably only return to four these days. But definitely nothing horrible in the line-up indeed.

Now that we have reached the top 600 it's time to go over which years and countries have lost the most songs. Here is how many songs each year has lost so far:

2007 · 8/42 · 19.0%

2008 · 8/43 · 18.6%

2001 · 4/23 · 17.4%

2011 · 7/43 · 16.3%

2003 · 4/26 · 15.4%

2010 · 6/39 · 15.4%

2009 · 6/42 · 14.3%

2017 · 6/42 · 14.3%

2004 · 5/36 · 13.9%

2012 · 5/42 · 11.9%

2006 · 4/37 · 10.8%

2014 · 4/37 · 10.8%

2005 · 4/39 · 10.3%

1999 · 2/23 · 8.7%

2000 · 2/24 · 8.3%

2013 · 3/39 · 7.7%

2015 · 3/40 · 7.5%

2002 · 1/24 · 4.2%

2016 · 1/42 · 2.4%

Probably most surprised at 2002 having lost only one song so far as I usually regard that contest as one of the absolute worst. Not at all surprised to see 2007 and 2008 in the lead as they are easily some of the worst contests. 2016 having only lost one entry so far is no surprise as it's definitely one of my favourite contests yet. Will be fun to update this come Top 500 to see what's changed.

Ouch at Lithuania & Latvia, the two neighbouring countries having lost a total of 12 songs combined. Belgium surprisingly hot on their heels with Poland, Portugal & Cyprus rounding up the top 6. Cyprus definitely being the odd one out as I didn't realise I disliked so many of their songs. Finland so far the only nordic country to have lost a single song so my regional bias is probably shining brightly at the moment lol. Would have expected Croatia to have lost more songs at this point. Monaco & Andorra too lol.

>> For anyone curious I have updated the front page with every song eliminated so far (listed by year).

Surprised you've only lost one of San Marino so far... there must be 3 to come in the 500s I'd have thought, at least!

I disagree re: saying "that's why Andorra never qualified for a final" (unless I read it wrong), they did send some decent entries - I felt "Sense Tu", "Get A Life" and "Salvem El Mon" all deserved to get through in each of their respective contests. They were poor years on the whole (2006 and 2007 in particular).

That Romanian entry was dire!

Also agree that 2001 and 2002 were pretty dreadful on the whole - to be fair though it took until now to lose one from 2002, there are also a lot less entries from pre-2004 due to not having had the semis.

I always forget about Keep The Faith but it is pretty bad, she was essentially making as much noise as she can by shouting her way through it and it didn't come across well at all.

No casualties yet that I particularly disagree with looking back, I have to echo your thoughts about Amar Pelois Dos! Just not my type of music at all, it drones on despite obviously only being 3 minutes and he is really unlikeable due to his whole attitude acting like his song is the greatest thing ever to enter Eurovision and he was so above it all. Sweetheart my ass  Each to their own and everything, even winners like say Lordi which I personally don't like I can see the appeal with, but APD is up there with Running Scared in that I cannot fathom quite how it won (well, Azerbaijan buying votes in the case of the latter ). Particularly by such a margin and with the highest points ever, so many 18s etc. (I know the points totals are higher in general now due to the new way of voting, but still). Absolutely baffling for something that sounds like something you'd hear at 3am on Radio 2.

I have to admit I'm surprised at that comment, Liam! You normally seem like you've got your head screwed on... a little too much sometimes ;)
I really love 2001 but it was the first year I properly followed, and bought the CD for, so I guess there's a lot of nostalgia there. I still regularly listen to a good 10-13-ish of those songs, which is good from such a small field!

I need to watch the contests from that era back again (2005 and before); I literally remember the winners and UK entries and the odd one and that's about it these days.

2001 was brilliant! Greece, France, Slovenia, Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland, Croatia all essential. For me the stage was FAR too big and empty and those hosts were rather dire. All made up by the Aqua interval act though *.*

2002's top 5 was sensational with the exception of the winner. Safe to say that was the first time a gimmick won the entire thing (unless I'm missing something glaringly obvious?). Maybe if Ira had pulled something else out of her dress along with the silver glitter it could've been different.

Been on vacation for 2 weeks and just returned so I'm resurrecting this today! I know all of you are incredibly excited about this and have probably been crying since this became inactive but worry not: I am back.

What does
mean?

Ah lol I'm posting this on another forum as well and there it turns into a long line that separates the entries from each other. I'm just too lazy to remove it before posting haha.

And there's one of the few Irish entries I'll defend! (along with Dervish, that went well) A bit tacky true, but my kind of tacky.

I wouldn't call Eg A Lif a highlight of Iceland, but I do find it quitey pleasant and melodic. I'll take Nebo being out though, always found that very boring.
