March 9, 20187 yr Author So Help Me Girl was the one Gary solo song truly pushed in America peaking at #44 so sadly outside of the US top 40 to be classified a hit. It was given a strong favourable review in Billboard which is at least a positive and went to #3 on the Adult Contemporary US chart. It failed to chart however top 100 in Canada and Gary has never had a solo track chart in Canada to date despite Take That earning chart topping status there two years earlier and having charted singles/albums. The single was reported to have hit number one in 13 nations and due to the information that is available this is likely to have been nations across Asia and South America where Gary did a World tour promotion. For example if a song like So Help Me Girl can hit #1 in 13 nations worldwide without published charts to view made available or rather hard to find then a song like Back For Good can definitely hit #1 in 31 nations worldwide. Twelve of those nations it did are listed above however there are HUNDREDS of nations all over the world big and small and it's only industry insiders who obtain these facts. Casual pop fans outside those nations have to make the best of the information provided though at least with the internet in full swing Take That's chartings are easier to find now! A song's success is always bigger than the information out there if that makes sense. The best person to ask would be Nigel Martin Smith or possibly Gary would know as well depending on how methodical he is around chart success. Michael Jackson books always list huge numbers of countries where he went to #1 in his discography obviously highlighting his attention to detail to such things whilst reaffirming that he was a big deal worldwide in all nations but the published charts for a lot of these nations in continents I highlight below are hard to find. There are numerous countries the World over where knowing a song's success isn't readily available especially in South America, Africa and large parts of Asia and in the 1990's so a song/album #1 or top 10 status song or album is actually greatly enhanced. However I'm reporting only official information readily found. The information however that is available does provide a telling clue to that particular continent trends as normally success has a ripple effect across borders however this isn't always the case. The glaring obvious example being the United States of America as though Robbie and Take That have had huge to moderate success in bordering countries Canada/Mexico in America they have a mainly blank discography. The single didn't take off in Europe at all with only the strong foundation of the UK & Ireland giving the single top 20 status. Gary's biggest solo global hit remains his first Forever Love which peaked opening week at #7 on the World Chart and was released three months after the end of Take That. March 9, 20187 yr Forever Love, was a beautiful song and a very strong debut solo single. Love Wont Wait was very forgettable and its a song i never warmed too or had much affection for. So Help Me Girl was wonderful, it is my favourite single from the album and it was a surprise it missed the top 10 considering his fourth single Open Road did. That said, Open Road was also a good single. Outside Love Wont Wait he released a very strong set of singles from his debut album. While Love Wont Wait is not a personnel favourite of mine it is likely no other song would have done better than it as it did achieve him his second solo number 1. Hang On In Their Baby or My Commitment are preferable songs for me.
