I totally agree.

Remember how Only Fools & Horses "finished" with a trilogy of near perfect episodes (Xmas 1999) which resulted in the Trotters finally "becoming millionaires".

But then the writer (John Sullivan) relented to public pressure & brought the show back for a few not very good Xmas Specials.

indeed... great comedys know when to stop...

I don't know how anyone can cry over a tv program  :o

Its not as if the actress that plays the part has died merely a character in a tv series etc

oh please, what a ridiculous comment.

Television is like art - making a statement like you have here, it's like saying... "How can music move you?" "How can that painting make you smile?".... nonsensical, absolutely ridiculous.

A programme as beautifully crafted and acted as the Royle Family has its strength in its ability to make you feel like part of their family - the absolute genius in the writing is that you feel genuine empathy and sympathy with the characters - the Royle Family is EVERYONE'S family - so of COURSE it can make you laugh, it can make you cry.

All credit to Liz Smith and Sue Johnstone for that achingly sad scene where Barabra was doing her Mum's hair... it was possibly one of the most perfect scenes I've ever seen on television. There wasn't a dry eye in our house. Perfect - I'd love to see Hollywood try a scene like that - it wouldn't even come close.

This was further proof that Cash and moreso Aherne are not only head and shoulders above all our other comedy writers - they're the best in the world right now... I do hope this is recognised at any forthcoming awards.....

Also - I bought the DVD yesterday - and the extras are brilliant - lots of bloopers Nana saying fukk a lot!, some marvellous deleted scenes including a great one with Mary and the drunken vicar at the wake... "Oh Father, you spoke so beautifully at the service, so moving... it was if you'd met her!".

Definitely worth a tenner of anyone's money.

very eloquent russ and spot on.

Best hour of comedy this year!

"What are your hobbies Slash?"

"Paintballing"

"Do you know, Cheryls father Joe has just paintballed their stairs and hall in magnolia?"

The great thing about it was that after 6 years away it felt exactly like the same show. It didnt felt tacky, rehashed, desperate, different, nothing at all...which proves how perfect it is. So good to have a whole episode dedicated to Nana as well as she's one of the better characters. It was a shame it did return and she died but the episode comepletely done justice to the show.
