There's been talk in a couple of threads about McFly using 'clever marketing' this week and 'not fighting fair'.

Can someone please explain what they did this week which was a bit sneaky?

Was it like Elton John giving away copies of the single to people who entered a competition?

Was it the huge amount of extras on the single?

Or was it something else?

If someone can please explain I would be most appreciative.

Three for £5 offer I think and a 99p single or something.

Basically...they offered all 3 formats,cd1,cd2 and a dvd for 5 quid in HMV and Virgin. They also got tons of downloads because fans could text a code to recieve the song...and a special live version, video version etc...

Don't quote me on it but that is most of what i remember!

I think Mcfly are great, can't understand how people can't like them even a little xxxxxx

I actually quite like them to a degree, and don't mind them as much as most people seem to here.

But they didn't deserve #1 this week. <_<

Oh I wondered why it had unusually large sales. It sold more than their last one did in it's first week by Friday.

Ah well it'll bomb next week.

Cool. Thanks for answering.

The 3 for £5 is quite common though and - as I said in another thread - it's not like it's attracting loads of casual buyers. People willing to spend £5 on McFly will be McFly fans, who'd buy at least 1 copy of the single as it is.

The free downloads thing is a bit of a cheat though. Naughty McFly.

1) 3 for £5 offer - done by loads of other acts

2) Loads of downloads - surely these are still being paid for by the person sending the text?

3) 6 signings during the week - they're hardly the first act to do signings are they

The text where pre-sales. So it's like adding last weeks downloads to this week.

Playing dirty or clever marketing - which ever way you look at it, it worked for them.

And another boyband are using the same strategy in a week's time in an attempt to beat All Saints, U2 & Green Day & Christina Aguilera to #1. :arrr:

Oh and i forgot the 6 signings up and down the country

They didn't just sign though, at four of the largest signings they performed 5 songs live and you had to be there early, as they gave out 800-900 wristbands which entitled you to have your "3 for £5 cd's collection" signed. I personally thought it was very "forced" promotion.

practically in yer face promotion

I used to like McFly but I absolutely hate them now. Their sell by date has well past but they continue being succesful with scams like this.
It's agressive promotion, but it's nessesary if they want to get band to Number 1 that are low in the airplay charts.

So?

Performing live - fairly common

Giving out wristbands - check the instores section on the HMV or Virgin websites and that is the norm for acts who are going to attract a large crowd - the store has to do it for safety reasons

I'm sure no-one was forced to buy all 3 formats to get a signature. In fact for time reasons they would probably only have been allowed to get one item signed.
