Welcome to the World Cup of Sitcoms! Over the next few days/weeks, some of your all time favourite sitcoms will be battling it out against each other to be the ultimate winner.

STAGES

  • GROUP STAGE: 8 Groups
  • QUARTER FINALS: 4 Groups
  • SEMI FINALS: 2 Groups
  • FINAL: 1 Group
Before that, we need to find which sitcoms should qualify for the Group Stage! So, in this thread, NOMINATE A MAXIMUM OF THIRTY SITCOMS from around the world - they do not have to be ranked. ~40 of the sitcoms with the most nominations will then be split into 8 groups for the Group Stage. To help generate ideas for nominations, I've tried to draw up an extensive list of both UK & US sitcoms but please please note THIS IS NOT AN EXTENSIVE LIST so don't feel you have to only nominate sitcoms on the list!!! You can nominate any show but it must come within a vague definition of sitcom - essentially it would be a scripted comedy show. Possibly controversial but I won't be accepting any animated shows, we've already got a separate competition for that!

Have fun nominating! You have until Wednesday 15th August!!

Friends will do amazingly well and I'm here for it, but as I'm watching through Seinfeld, I must say, half of the gags and plot points from Friends are directly taken from Seinfeld. It's quite odd to watch but it's so clearly influenced it reveals a lot about its originality.

Didn’t watch much comedy growing up but getting into more old and new now! I adore all of these but I’d actually put Not Going Out as my fave, so many laughs even if it is a bit predictable. They have ruined it (sort-of) with the kids :’( Miranda said if she would do another series she and Gary would’ve had kids as well, yay x

Plus these which weren't on the OP list:

Joey

Green Acres

Rules of Engagement

Anger Management

I did think about putting forward some Australian ones just for the reach but it's all crap

IASIP & Veep are my Top 2 tv shows of all time fyi so if neither of them go through (which I think will be the case) I will cry. In fact a good bunch of those I've nominated would be in my Top 50. More realistically I hope The Office (US), Seinfeld, and Arrested Development can do well here.
