Quite a task for her as "Shape Of You" managed 15 weeks at the top. She looks pretty likely to get the longest running by an Australian artist, the record is 10 weeks for that.

I'm late so I'll be quick which is fortunate because there's not much to note this week. Tones And I has been #1 for 9 consecutive weeks, which matches the absurd reign of Justice Crew's "Que Sera" from 2014 (for UK readers: imagine it's a JLS song or something), which is the longest reign for an Australian artist in the ARIA era. She'll almost certainly make a 10th week next week and match the all time record. Also a surprise is that Marshmello's "One Thing Right" continues to climb to #4, only 1 place behind his highest peaker "Happier". With an average WI of 15.7, it's a remarkably ancient top 10 which might be helping it. The highest debut of the week comes from Maroon 5 which zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

how odd that One Thing Right is a big smash there when it barely impacted the UK and didn’t do too well in the US either.

and yes Maroon 5 can snooze right off. thank god it’s not going near the UK top 40.

Yeah it's like this weird anomaly, where it's steadily dropping off on Spotify all around the world...except in Australia. My only guess is that Australia is just a bit more receptive to country singers than everywhere else but the US, but in the US, Marshmello isn't anywhere near a consistent top 10 hitmaker like he is in the UK/AU, so Australia is like a perfect Venn diagram for it :P

A warning for any cars or men holding a fish on Facebook, "Dance Monkey" is now the longest running #1 single by an Australian artist of all time. It logs a 10th week and is set for a safe 11th next week, thus Australian music is destroyed forever as the record is no longer being held by that song that makes drunken adults drop their pants and make their children uncomfortable. Post Malone continues to be quite proficient at holding down the #2 position, 4 weeks running now, closing in on the 6 week feat for "Better Now" last year. If not for "Circles", then "Senorita" would have logged 13 weeks at #2 now. This is largely because the charts have been monumentally stuck to the point that the top 9 is unchanged this week, and the only change in the top 10 is Sam Smith finally getting there with "How Do You Sleep?" after 10 weeks between #11 & #14. Things look to finally get shaken up next week with new singles from Travis Scott & Dan + Shay bidding for the top 10, and probably Maroon 5 too for some reason. Lizzo scores a 2nd top 20 hit with "Good As Hell", and just ahead of it "Truth Hurts" scores a new peak after 5 months on the chart, partly because radio are finally actually playing it. Flume also scores his first top 20 hit since "Say It" in 2016 with "Rushing Back", which is also another contribution to the sad fact that so many popular Australian female artists can only crack the top 50 when guesting on male rapper or producer tracks (well Vera Blue did make the top 50 several times as a Voice contestant but who's counting that). Nonetheless Vera Blue has now sat on both sides of this as her only other top 50 hit was a guest spot on Illy's "Papercuts". This issue does not apply to British singers though and Freya Ridings scores her first top 50 single with "Castles".

Post Malone maintains the #1 album just barely this week. The Beatles' 50th anniversary of "Abbey Road" takes the former #1 album back to #2. Much of the rest of this week's entries are cause for existentialism for fans of early 2010s artists. Busby Marou's last album entered at #1 in 2017, this week they debut at #5. It's something of a surprise to see that they're now able to net bigger opening sales than Boy & Bear who were always much more popular in a similar field, if not for Adele's "21" they would have had 3 #1 albums. Alas they have been out of the limelight for several years as their lead singer has been dealing with chronic illness, and their return sees a #7 debut. But there are more former #1 Australian artists because Hermitude's follow up to their #1 album from 2015 lands at #18. Dean Lewis returns to the top 50 off the back of a performance at the AFL Grand Final, keeping DaBaby from scoring a top 10 debut. Since he's not credited on "Enemies" for no reason, this is his first appearance in the Australian top 50. Next week we'll see what Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds and City and Colour can do (there are too many 'and's to make that sentence legible) with their latest albums.

haha just curious but what song makes drunken adults drop their pants??

Daddy Cool's

which was #1 for 10 weeks in 1971, because Australians are weird (in terms of the tradition, the song itself isn't weird).

Dance Monkey is a better song anyway tbh, and no one can deny how huge it’s gotten now. I can’t turn on the radio without hearing it.

Do you know if Triple J have been playing any Tones and I? It’ll be interesting to see how well she does in the Hottest 100 next year between JRA/DM/NSTR/any future single. It’s undoubtably the biggest song of the year but whether or not it’s the most popular idk

Yeah they've pretty much been playing her since the day JRA was released, all 3 of the singles and now they're spinning the title track to her EP. I'm fairly sure she's the first triple j Unearthed artist to hit #1 in the UK. She's definitely a big Hottest 100 contender but I'm not sure she can contend for #1 just because she's way too polarizing for their audience from what I've seen which can only get you so far. Could be like Dean Lewis coming 6th last year, and though his hit wasn't quite as big, he didn't have the vote splitting that Tones is gonna get. I think "bad guy" might just pip "Dance Monkey" for #1 chances even though Billie has the same vote splitting potential. Incidentally I feel it may be close between these two songs for #3 on the ARIA End Of Year list (behind "Old Town Road" & "Sunflower").

(I also think it's better than "Eagle Rock" :P)

11 weeks at #1 for "Dance Monkey" means that all Australian targets have been beaten and we have to look global for future landmarks. It's now the equal 10th longest reigning song of all time, and equal 5th longest reigning for this decade. It's anyone's guess how long she can keep it up, but I do think a 12th week is pretty safe. There is actually some fresh music in the chart this week too, with two top 10 debuts. Travis Scott scores his highest ever charting single with "HIGHEST IN THE ROOM", his 3rd top 10 hit following "SICKO MODE" & "STARGAZING". Dan + Shay's chart improvement is significantly better with "10,000 Hours", as they only previously made the chart earlier this year with #69 peaking "Tequila". Maroon 5 maroon 5 songs to move up to #7. Lil Nas X just holds on in the top 10 with "Old Town Road" which with 27 weeks in the top 10, is the 2nd longest top 10 runner, just behind "Sunflower" of course. "Good As Hell" overtakes "Truth Hurts" to become Lizzo's highest ever charter at #14. Roughly 4 songs are missing from the top 100 this week which allows Zedd to erroneously debut though he'd likely do so properly next week. This list of songs includes SHAED's "Trampoline", but midweek data suggests it will chart next week so ZAYN will debut alongside Harry instead of Niall.

Post Malone holds the #1 spot for a 5th week, which is the longest consecutive run for an album at #1 in 2019. In terms of total weeks, it ties Ed Sheeran, but is still 2 weeks behind Billie Eilish's 7 weeks at #1 for the longest reign of the year. Post Malone likely is only at #1 due to the lack of physical release for the new Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds album. Their last 2 albums have reached the #1 spot and it wasn't a tough challenge this week under normal circumstances, but they have to settle for #7. City and Colour scores his 4th consecutive top 10 album this week. Unlike The Bad Seeds, he's never had a #1 album, and instead has unluckily been #2 once on his own, and also #2 with his collaborative You+Me project with P!nk. Tyler, The Creator tops the Vinyl chart and returns at #15 with the excellent "IGOR", while Summer Walker translates strong streaming presence to a top 20 debut as well. Lizzo has a mighty jump to a new peak which makes me suspect that her streaming wasn't being counted correctly until now. A slow week means that a new Hillsong Worship album could challenge for the #1 spot, but don't forget to stream BABYMETAL's new album ~

maybe if Adele releases a single, she can stop T&I, but now sure how big Adele is in AU

"Hello" debuted at #1 and stayed there for 6 straight weeks (and "25" & "21" are both currently in the top 100 albums), so the potential is definitely there. The only concern would be that hype post "25" is not going to match hype post "21", and of course streaming is much more important than it was 4 years ago and that proved Adele not unstoppable back then, as Justin Bieber's "Sorry" actually outstreamed "Hello" when they both debuted.

Tones and I has now been #1 for 12 consecutive weeks, which makes "Dance Monkey" one of the top 10 longest reigns at #1 ever. It's the 4th longest reigning #1 of the 2010s, behind just 'Shape Of You", "Old Town Road" & "Despacito", though it will likely tie the latter two next week. In a world where "Memories" is climbing fast, this is a favourable outcome. 10 years following Jay Sean's #1 residence on the Hot 100, Regard's remake of "Ride It" makes the top 10 and looks to keep climbing from #5. Harry Styles scores his 2nd top 10 hit with "Lights Up", which is actually doing far better on streaming than sales now, but doesn't look likely to hold in the top 10, to make room for new rising hits like "Someone You Loved". blackbear's misogynistic nonsense is also in the top 10. Proving that sometimes post-album pushes can work, "South Of The Border" surpasses its original #14 peak from when it debuted. In a similar sense, it seems that Tones and I has had the "Thinking Out Loud" treatment (in terms of the UK Chart), as "Never Seen The Rain" been charting endlessly with limited airplay and playlist treatment. Now with both of these, it looks to finally crack the top 20, and maybe come close to the top 10. Waiting even longer is Sam Feldt who looks likely to score his 2nd ever top 50 hit as this week he climbs to #51 in his 15th week, I don't even know why. Yet again there are probably 3 songs missing from the top 100 due to ARIA silliness, and conveniently, there are 3 waste of space re-entries at the bottom (I like Billie but the point still stands x).

Post Malone has now been #1 for 6 weeks running. This is one of the lowest activity weeks I think I've ever seen in terms of pure sales because most of the stream heavy albums are sliding up. Egregiously, Jason Derulo's 2016 compilation "Platinum Hits", one of the few compilations not hit by recent rule changes has hit a new peak of #75 this week. The highest new entry comes from Hillsong who seem to have missed a really easy opportunity for a #1 on a slow week. Speaking of missing #1, Grinspoon have made a career out of being exceptionally bad at hitting the #1 spot due to bad timing. They've also never had a top 10 single, possibly because their "Pushing Buttons" EP was put on the album chart for its first week and ARIA never retroactively fixed it, despite moving it straight to the singles chart forever after then. Anyway, it's roughly their 25th anniversary, and they have a 2nd Best Of. Their first from 2005 peaked at #12, now this new one is at #9. BABYMETAL's 3rd album enters at #18, having previously made the top 10 with their 2nd album in 2016. This is still fairing far better than Lukas Graham who debuted ahead of them at #1 that week, but then their next album missed the top 100. For UK pundits, the current #1 over there from Elbow debuts at #60 here. Next week we should likely see a new #1 from Jessica Mauboy.

Is Samantha Jade really doing nothing? Sad times.

She's doing okay on radio & iTunes and that's about it, however she was also just added to Hot Hits Australia which could push her somewhat close to the top 100 maybe.

It would be a reasonable assumption 3 months ago that "Old Town Road" would be the longest running #1 hit of the year, but it's taken 1 shy of the minimum requirement to be matched, as "Dance Monkey" is now #1 for a 13th week, making it one of 5 songs in history to last this long, with only "Fernando" & "Shape Of You" having spent longer. Tones' lead continues to hold on all platforms so you can probably lock in week 14 as well. 7 of these 13 weeks have been spent with "Circles" at #2, but it may be its last as Selena Gomez looks to make a big splash next week (she was not let on the chart this week and may have cracked the top 50, leading to one of the biggest top 50 jumps of all time, shame). Aside from the nonsense chart run I refuse to dignify, there's a new arrival in the top 10 (and top 20) also from Tones and I, with "Never Seen The Rain"'s belated push sending it right to #10, outpeaking her first single which leaves the top 50 this week. Katy Perry continues to narrowly graze the top 40 as "Harleys In Hawaii" becomes her 3rd song to peak between #31 & #40 this year. Sam Feldt scores his 2nd top 50 hit with his song that debuted on the same week as "Goodbyes" because I don't know why, but it might have been his last chance as some Spotify playlists have decided that maybe 4 months of pushing it is enough. SHAED have their first top 50 hit and Juice WRLD has his 3rd. Contrary to Selena this week, it's been a remarkable week in terms of ARIA getting their shit together because 4 weeks late, YNW Melly scores his 2nd top 100 hit with "223's", which outpeaks "Murder On My Mind" only because it was let on the chart sooner. It's possible both songs should be top 50 hits. In splendid news for me, they've also extended this olive branch to BENEE who finally makes the top 100 for the first time after previous singles "Soaked" & "Glitter" were both denied the privilege (only "Evil Spider" was actually let on the chart the week it was released and that was nowhere near the top 100). My avatar-sakes Flight Facilities are also back and in a curious turn of events, after their last chart entry was entirely helped by Spotify playlists, their new single is getting the Marian Hill/SHAED treatment and is being shunned possibly because it's in ads promoting Apple products. So in terms of position it's their biggest digital hit ever, though "Clair de lune"'s ~4000 sales peak probably would disagree.

In an interesting turn of events, Jessica Mauboy now has a #1 album that's not tied to a soundtrack. Previously she had sort-of #1 albums by way of The Secret Daughter & The Sapphires, but now she's done it on her own with "Hilda". The top 10 is a 50:50 split of stalwarts & debuts, the next highest being the latest triple j Like A Version compilation, which I imagine wouldn't have made the top 10 if not for Denzel Curry's inclusion. At #6 it's a far cry from the #1 peaks the series used to boast, but I suppose that's to be expected when it's never been properly available to stream. Alter Bridge score a 2nd consecutive top 10 album, just 1 place lower than before. The 5th album from local hip-hop collective Horrorshow gives them a 3rd top 10, having previously made #2 with their 3rd. Foals manage a top 10 peak this time around after their first portion this year landed at #11. They scored their first UK #1 this week but over here only 2013's "Holy Fire" got there, which I remain convinced is because they discounted it on release and made people like me end up buying it. Next week makes for an interesting prospect of how James Blunt selling really well but not streaming, and Rex Orange County streaming really well but not selling will duel, but likely both will end up way behind Kanye West.

Apparently it's the first time in 15 years that the singles and album chart both had a female Australian artist at #1. Looks like the two artists involved were Missy Higgins and Paulini?

Yep you're right, I heard about it earlier in the week but forgot by the time I went to put this down. I was also just noticing after that Jessica Mauboy has charted a new top 50 hit every year since 2008, I suspect she has the longest streak going now that Rihanna didn't have one last year (only because Lemon debuted at #48 in 2017, but it re-entered at #44 in 2018 :P)
