does Selena have a chance to dethrone T&I?

Possibly in the future but not this week, Tones is still leading on every platform.

Very impressed with Jessica Mauboy, had no idea she was still so popular.

Because it's the one thing worth keeping track of, Tones And I has now been #1 for 14 consecutive weeks. This is actually an all-time record tied with "Fernando" because the only song that has spent longer at #1, "Shape Of You" did so non-consecutively as Harry Styles debuted at #1 in the middle of its reign. Note that I'm not about to pretend that Tones actually has the #1 record because unlike the UK, I use common sense, but that doesn't matter because Tones will almost certainly have that record anyway, still #1 on iTunes, Spotify & Apple. This is largely because nobody is rising to the challenge. Her closest competitor this week is Selena Gomez who artificially debuts at #2 which is her highest chart position ever in Australia, but she looks to decline after this week. A similar thing can be said for our other top 10 arrivals. The latest proponent of a cynical remix for sake of chart position is Lizzo's "Good As Hell", which in kind, becomes her first top 10 hit. Meanwhile Kanye West released a new album and since ARIA seem to have accurately counted its streams, it arrives with a top 10 debut in "Follow God". Aside from bringing back Clipse & Kenny G to the top 50 for the first time in 17 & 26 years respectively, Kanye West notably debuts his entire album in the top 100, which after "ye" & "KIDS SEE GHOSTS" makes him the first artist to do this 3 times. He just narrowly misses out on getting the entire album in the top 50, a feat which has only been pulled off I think 3 times, by Ed Sheeran, Ariana Grande & Kanye himself. It would have also possibly made "Jesus Is Lord" probably the shortest song to ever make the top 50. The first time that Taylor Swift & Kanye West can be connected, their respective album releases are the only times that "Eastside" has been pushed out of the top 50. A longer album would have also made a significant impact by potentially pushing out "Shape Of You" from the top 100 for the first time ever. Instead it lands at #98 this week and probably won't leave until the chart becomes Christmas inundated.

Speaking of Kanye, he's #1 on the album chart. He scores his 3rd #1 album following "Yeezus" & "ye", in-between which "The Life Of Pablo" never charted because ARIA took too long to include streaming in the album chart. This is relatively noteworthy because he's only the 2nd solo rapper to have this many, after Eminem. In terms of hip-hop as a whole, only Eminem & Hilltop Hoods have more than him, and only Bliss N Eso match him. Rex Orange County makes his first chart appearance ever all the way up at #4. He once remarked that Australia was the first country to ever give him a gold single (with "Loving Is Easy"). James Blunt scores his 7th top 10 album which bucks the usual trends and actually charts higher than his last, which was his only album to miss the top 5. With a lack of major new entries, it's possible that Kanye West could retain the #1 spot for the first time ever next week, but I think it's more likely that Post Malone returns to the top.

Tones And I has now been #1 for 15 consecutive weeks. I've never seen anybody do the thing she did before because it's an all-time first. It also ties "Dance Monkey" with "Shape Of You" for overall most weeks, and I can pretty much already report that she's got the record locked up next week. #2 may be a case for competition instead as it's a little less clear. I purposely waited until today to type this up because I was hoping to get some mid-week data but it seems ARIA isn't divulging it much anymore, so I have no idea about the status of Arizona Zervas's "ROXANNE". It should have been around the top 20 this week but it's completely missing, so I can only hope that it'll take a high chart position (see "Jocelyn Flores", "Ransom") to make the penny drop, as it's approaching the #1 spot on Spotify. Otherwise Maroon 5 are #1 on iTunes and could take the #2 slot as well. Dua Lipa scores the first top 10 debut of her career with "Don't Start Now", which is also her 4th top 10 hit. It may make a challenge for a higher peak later in the month as she'll be in the country to perform at the ARIA Awards. Otherwise most of the action on the chart this week is stuff rushing back up to replace all the Kanye tracks from last week. Near the bottom are some curiosities. Major Lazer & Khalid's track from Death Stranding makes for a rare case of a song from a video game soundtrack in the top 50, the only other I can think of is Eminem's "Survival". Drax Project give New Zealand mega-stars Six60 their first ever top 50 hit, and the recent remix with Travis Scott sends Young Thug's "Hot" from just outside of the top 100 to becoming Thugga's 2nd lead artist top 50 hit this year.

Kanye West holds the #1 spot on the album chart for the first time in his career ("Yeezus" could have done the same if not bumped off by a new entry in week 2) though I suspect some of the lowest sales at the top spot ever. That'll change next week as I suspect Luke Combs has the #1 spot wrapped up with his new album. The highest new entry this week comes from legendary indigenous singer/songwriter Archie Roach who has actually never made the top 10 before and does so with his 9th studio album. Though not career highs, Jeff Lynne's ELO & Miranda Lambert improve on the peaks on their previous albums and land in the top 20.

Amazing run for Tones & I, it's rare that a song this successful is one that I actually really like!

It is a terrible week for boomers across the country as they've had to face the fact that the all-time ARIA record which has stood for about 2.5 years has been broken. Tones and I has been #1 for an outright record 16 weeks in a row. If you are interested in the ridiculous targets she can still reach, The Beatles were #1 for 24 consecutive weeks across 5 different singles in 1963/1964. At the very least I think she can get 17 weeks as there's no consistent competition across all platforms. Billie Eilish may peg for a #2 debut however. Really the most baffling thing of the week is that "Memories" has gotten to #2. Maroon 5 have now had 5 #2 singles following their only #1 hit "She Will Be Loved", which serves as a great reminder that "Moves Like Jagger" probably only missed out on #1 because Take40's website leaked the video for "Somebody That I Used To Know" a week before the song was planned to be released, giving it just enough time to scale to the top of the charts and leapfrog Maroon 5 the week that "Someone Like You" finally ran out of steam. In good chart accuracy news, Arizona Zervas has been let on the chart with "Roxanne" making an instant appearance at #5. It will likely climb but really needs sales to pick up. "Lose Control" overtakes "Piece Of Your Heart" to give MEDUZA a 2nd top 20 hit, bafflingly "Piece Of Your Heart" is still on Hot Hits Australia after all this time. "Post Malone" has also now overtaken the Post Malone song it debuted alongside. Possibly for the 2nd week in a row, Kygo gets to hang on in the top 50 because of a chart omission, this time being Ant Saunder's "Yellow Heart" which might possibly have cracked the top 50 this week. It's not the only omission however, because if the chart were counted accurately, Billie Eilish's new song probably should have charted, and also Doja Cat who scored her first ever entry this week, should have also had "Candy" debuting. With a new ONEFOUR single doing quite well so far, it's likely to say this will only get worse.

Luke Combs naturally gets his first ever #1, which is the logical progression when his last album is still in the top 20. Perhaps Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds should have done the physical release for "Ghosteen" a week earlier as that may have been a freebie, but thus they've broken their streak of #1 albums recently. We've got more soundtrack spam at #7, but also curiously, a first ever time entry for Six60 all the way up at #8. The Script's latest album becomes their first to miss the top 10, a decline perhaps to be expected since they haven't had a single chart here since I believe their 2014 album. FKA twigs reaches new heights having made #30 with "LP1" and this time #22, U2 re-enter as they are currently touring the country. Of random note below the top 50 at #65, The Chainsmokers' incremential album is now long enough at 6 tracks to appear on the album chart. I'm actually surprised ARIA got this right.

Wild times continue. Tones and I has now been #1 for 17 weeks running, so even if "Shape Of You" had not had its reign interrupted by Harry Styles & DJ Khaled, she'd still have the longest running #1. To make matters even more outlandish, I don't see a reason for her to be knocked off this week either. Arizona Zervas is taking a decent lead on Spotify, but struggles to crack the top 30 on iTunes, while "Dance Monkey" resides at #1 there. I'm also writing this post a few hours before this year's ARIA Awards start, where not only is Tones and I nominated for half a dozen awards, but she's also performing, alongside Guy Sebastian, Hilltop Hoods, Teskey Brothers, Thelma Plum, Human Nature, and most importantly Dua Lipa, Halsey & Khalid because we love Australian music. Billie Eilish scores her 2nd highest charter ever with "everything i wanted" entering at #2 though sadly not looking like holding on strong from here. After 13 weeks at #1, "Dance Monkey" had only blocked 1 song from the top spot, now it's blocked 4. More not-at-all-cynical remixes shoots "Lover" back into the top 20 for another brief moment, and Freya Ridings sneaks into the top 20 with "Castles", begging the question of whether it might actually be becoming a bigger hit in Australia than the UK. In 2017 Harry Styles followed up his #1 hit with a #39 follow up, he's got that #39 again with "Watermelon Sugar" although this time it looks to at least climb next week. The most exciting news of the week is that is that Sydney drill collective and enemy of the police ONEFOUR have finally been allowed on the chart, after their previous 4 singles have been left off ARIA's tracking list. To my knowledge the only other drill song to make the ARIA Charts has been..."Man's Not Hot", but also it's been a really long time since a new Australian hip-hop artist has cracked the top 50. Depending on how you rule it, the last was either Jeswon & Tuka from Thundamentals (via a charity single), Hermitude in 2013 (whose two big hits are 1. instrumental & 2. fronted by an NZ rapper), and if you don't count that, then it's Illy in 2012. Notably Tkay Maidza peaked at #51 in 2014 but basically half a generation of vibrant, exciting times in local hip hop has been overlooked by mass consumption. LANY already have a gold single here with "ILYSB" but now they chart for the first time ever alongside Lauv. It's also vitally important to note that "Eastside" has hit the landmark 69th week in the top 50, and on the topic of comebacks lower down. T-Pain has not been seen on the charts since his surprisingly huge single "Turn All The Lights Out" in 2012, and The Black Eyed Peas haven't had a proper new single on the chart (so excluding "#WHERESTHELOVE") since "Don't Stop The Party" in 2011, which was their first single post-"Where Is The Love" to miss the top 10. As one final note, Kygo & Whitney Houston have been #50 4 weeks in a row now. Several of those weeks should be invalid because of songs missing, notably recently Ant Saunders' "Yellow Hearts", although that looks to be entering the chart properly next week.

Paul Kelly has made slightly noteworthy history this week. Bizarrely he'd never had a #1 album until 2017, and he followed it up a year later with another #1. His previous "Songs From The South" compilation was a huge seller in 1997 and a staple in Australian homes, now with another 2 decades to draw from, he gets a compilation to #1, making him the first Australian artist to ever score a #1 album in 3 successive years. Speaking of 1997, Celine Dion returns with a new album at #2. This is her highest chart position since 2002, when she scored her 5th and so far final #1 album. Surprisingly consistent is Lady Antebellum, who've now charted 6 top 10 albums, all between #4 & #8. The soundtrack to "Frozen" was the 3rd highest seller of 2014, and is still in the top 100 this week, but it did have a modest top 30 debut, as does the sequel's soundtrack. I believe the film releases tomorrow so we shall see how it goes replicating it. Next week looks to be all about Coldplay, but perhaps Robbie Williams or Rod Stewart can pose some sort of challenge.

Earlier this year the US Hot 100 #1 record was beaten thusly by 3 weeks. As of this week, the same has happened in Australia as Tones and I notches up an 18th week at #1. It's pretty fair to say that a 19th week is essentially confirmed too. The closest competition is Arizona Zervas who has been trading the top spot with Tones on Spotify but still struggles to gain any notable pure sales. This week sees the effect of the 2019 ARIA Awards, except that since they were on Wednesday night and I'm not sure Spotify data was properly handled anyway, you can barely see it and it'll be more apparent next week maybe. But also maybe not because the Christmas avalanche looks to be coming next week. After a month's hiatus, ARIA brought back their Pulse Chart which suggests Michael Buble's tracks which have been excluded from the chart for the past 7 years will be let back in the chart, much higher than ever before. As for this week, Harry Styles scores his 3rd top 20 hit with an 18 place jump to #20. Lewis Capaldi already has a 2nd platinum hit with "Bruises", but now he actually has a 2nd top 50 hit with "Before You Go". In the space of 30 months, Khalid now has 23 top 50 hits with latest "Up All Night". There's also a belated entry for "Yellow Hearts" whose exclusion last week allowed Kygo to net an improper 4th consecutive week at #50. This week it's 5th consecutive and it's still improper because Trevor Daniel's fast rising hit "Falling" is completely absent. Despite getting pretty good sales over the years, Riton never charted with any of his Kah-Lo collaborations and now does for the first time alongside Oliver Heldens, who I don't think has charted since "Gecko (Overdrive)". "Turn Me On" in fact has been selling well for weeks and is a top 10 fixture on the Shazam charts, but just now got the Spotify playlist bump. Doja Cat has a belated 2nd entry for "Candy" which has been missing for a couple weeks, and because of additional missing songs, we get 2 more improper debuts. Sofi Tukker had a top 50 hit with "Drinkee" about 3 years ago and now score their 2nd ever chart entry at the very bottom of the chart, which would imply that all the people are dancing on them, but Australia is in the upside down part of the globe so maybe it works.

Coldplay score their 6th #1 album. "Parachutes"'s slow burning success only saw it climb to #2, while their last album was released in an ill-advised time where Adele was steamrolling everything, so "Ghost Stories" was their last #1 album here. Prior to this album, "A Rush Of Blood To The Head" was the only Coldplay album without a top 20 hit (and aside from "A Head Full Of Dreams", the rest had top 10 hits on them), so far the biggest hit on this album however is "Orphans" with just a #68 peak. They hold off fellow Britons with Robbie Williams having been unable to score a #1 album since 2009 but has since made the top 4 five times in a row, and Rod Stewart whose last #1 album was in 1991 but this is his equal 2nd highest chart position since then at #3. A great opportunity to be cynical about ARIA's Hall Of Fame is how increasingly apparent it is that it's become a platform to plug a new release, which might explain why the extremely inactive, but holders of more ARIA Awards than any other artist Silverchair, are yet to be inducted, but instead this year we had vocal group Human Nature inducted, whose discography at this point is mostly covers. They scored their first top 50 hit in 1996 and their last in 2004, and their latest album boasts "30 Years Of Hits" as it enters at #10, just ahead of Leonard Cohen's posthumous release. Multiple ARIA Award winners The Teskey Brothers take a big jump this week, even ahead of actual Album Of The Year winner Dean Lewis. Next week, with Frozen actually in theatres, it's set to make a big jump, maybe to #1? Fork if I know.

Surprised “Candy” is the Doja Cat single au choix for Australia, will “Juicy” be impacting soon as well?

Already has! It debuted in the top 70 2 weeks ago and is slipping down now.

Yep that's 19 weeks at #1 for "Dance Monkey". Yep, it'll be there next week to land an even 20. As I write this, she remains at #1 on iTunes & Apple, while being dethroned yesterday posthumously by Juice WRLD on Spotify. The split week means he may not quite hit a new peak this week with "Lucid Dreams", but could do so with "Robbery" or "Bandit", his only other top 50 peakers. I am wondering if vertical videos are now counting to the chart because Dua Lipa takes a big jump to #3 that I can't really account for, but it's hard to tell at the moment. The only particularly new songs this week are both from The Weeknd, with "Heartless" sneaking into the top 10 and "Blinding Lights" not far behind at #16. After being excluded from every year of the streaming era, Michael Buble belatedly scores a new top 50 hit with "It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas", which really should have been a top 10 hit by now. It's constant pot luck with Christmas entries though, notably I can see Ariana Grande's "Santa Tell Me" missing from the chart, even though it was there last year. On the topic of missing songs, "Falling" continues to be pointlessly omitted, and if this week's midweek's are to be trusted, BENEE seems to be getting robbed of a top 50 hit for a 2nd time, as "Glitter" is showing big streaming strength but is nowhere to be seen. I hate the charts.

Following suit with the UK Charts, Robbie Williams climbs to #1 to claim his first #1 album in 10 years, fending off big climbers from Frozen 2 & Human Nature. The heightened pure sales of December charts makes for an interesting dynamic, where Ed Sheeran's "÷" is out of the top 20 for the first time ever, and "x" is out of the top 70 for the first time ever.

Not shackled by the tedium of airplay as a chart component, Tones and I does what Lil Nas X couldn't do in the US and lasts for 20 weeks at the top. She looks pretty safe for a 21st week and thus it's a very strong possibility that a song that hit #1 at the start of August will be dethroned by "All I Want For Christmas Is You", though I don't know how anyone instinctively turns to Christmas music like that when so much of the country is literally on fire. After 13 weeks at #1, "Dance Monkey" had blocked a total of 1 song from becoming a #1 hit. 7 weeks later, it's now blocked 6 songs, as Dua Lipa climbs to #2. Still not addressing the sludge but there's a lot of end of year playlist rebounds this week, to the disadvantage of anything that's been in the chart for less than 5 months. Harry Styles has also now managed 3 top 20 hits on his new album out last week, compared to just 1 he scored from his first. The big news of the week is Juice WRLD's passing, and he has a 1:1 return of all his past top 50 hits, with "Bandit" scoring a new peak. I am always a bit skeptical of ARIA's data regarding mid-week streaming boosts, as all of his entries feel like they should be at least several pegs higher. If true, "Robbery" is caught in the middle of two opposing errors, where maybe it should be higher, but also if not, then it shouldn't be in the top 50 at all because of the Trevor Daniel & BENEE elephants that are not in the room. I at least have confirmation that Trevor Daniel will chart next week but I'm more than slightly peeved about the other situation. "All Girls Are The Same" joins the increasing canon of songs that were platinum certified before even entering the chart, and this is my yearly reminder that ARIA have galaxy brained themselves into combining all Band Aid streams and sales into Band Aid 30, though I'm actually not sure the original version on its own would have cracked the top 100 this week so there is that. Because of its streams being split up into multiple versions that don't turn up individually high on year end list round ups, "Perfect" falls to an all new low of #90, only a few places ahead of "Shape Of You". Depending on how many Christmas songs are let on the chart, they might finally drop out soon.

Australian pub rock icons Cold Chisel score their first #1 album in 17 years, having scored their first #1 38 years ago, can I get a 'yeaaaaah baby'. This is the band's 5th #1 album overall, which combined with all of Jimmy Barnes' solo #1's makes for a staggering amount, this is also the first time in about 35 years that both have scored a #1 album in the same year. Surprising to me is that Camila Cabello scores a 2nd top 10 album despite releasing on an inauspicious week for chart positions, and despite the album's only major hit not even being her song (in fact "Liar" tanked on the chart this week because more people listen to it on playlists than on the album apparently). On the topic of streaming, the week's most streamed album, 'Hollywood's Bleeding" is not in the top 10 this week, as increased pure sales are causing a temporary exodus of stream-reliant albums. After dropping out of the top 70 for the first time last week, "x" is out of the top 80 for the first time this week. The Chainsmokers having a full album out means that they can now crack the top 30, though their most streamed song on Spotify last week was "Closer". Something I observed last year was that Juice WRLD's album was not having its streaming data processed properly, so it only now cracks the top 40 for the first time now, putting it above the oof-worthy debut of Liam Payne's album, whose reinterpretation of FKA twigs' first album charts considerably lower than the original. Maybe stream equivalent album sales will save it in January. It's not all bad news for ex-Directioners though, as it looks like Harry Styles is en route to scoring a 2nd #1 album next week. Stormzy will probably have to settle for top 20.

20 weeks for DM is mental like. She will likely replace herself at no1 soon but Mariah must be certain like in the uk for next week.

That makes 21 weeks at #1 for Tones and I. For once I can't say she's probably #1 next week because the default sanctioned Mariah Carey #1 must return, look forward to being bored by its dominance in the year immediately after it hits #1 in your respective country as it has nothing left to gain. Harry Styles has a big week, including "Adore You" matching the #7 peak of "Lights Up", and all but 2 tracks on his album charting (by comparison, only 3 songs from his first album charted). Trevor Daniel is finally let on the chart, BENEE still isn't which is the only reason why LadBaby is able to sneak onto the chart erroneously. Speaking of errors, Andy Williams debuts on the chart only because he wasn't allowed to last year. Next week, The Pogues, among others, will also make their very belated debut.

Still DM lol, it's unbeatable. Xmas songs not doing as well here.
