'all around the world' (jam, 77) was just about my fav 'punk/new wave' tracks.. it was utter class capturing the spirit of the new sounds in '77.

'funeral pyre' was also a great track and i liked most of jams hits.

however

i regard paul weller as one of the worst plagarists of all time, knicking riffs shamelessly. (ok, todays music is full of 'samples' but he gave no credit to his scources)

he pinched heavily from the kinks, beatles and even e.l.o. (changing man is 10538 overture)

yea Ive heard that, they say the riff from Start is taken from the Beatles Taxman. Tho I think alot of artists do, Oasis, even George Harrison did without realising with My Sweet Lord

actually, in fairness, many early beatle tracks pinched riffs or snips from remote minor U.S. hits.. i saw this on the tv rockumentary 'john lennons jukebox', fascinating insight into what inspired him.

ps.... im not so sure about george 'not realising' he had pinched the 'my sweet lord' riff, as 'hes so fine' was a well known enough track and im sure that anybody in the music buis would have heard it.
Actually Weller has himself admitted nicking riffs, but I still regard him as great musician  He's great to see live, always a fantastic atmosphere with fans of all ages, from those who've been with him from the early days, to teenagers just discovering his music!

Weller admitted at the time he had based Start on Taxman. In an interview with Record Mirror in late 1980 he said how the Jam were touring the US and mainly listened to Revolver during their trip. Dreams Of Children (the B side of Going Underground) was similarly inspired by a track from Revolver, Tomorrow Never Knows. At least with that song they didn't lift the sound (the Chemical Brothers did that years later though!), just the idea of backward tracking (or whatever it is called!). However, Smithers Jones, the version on their 1979 Setting Sons album is quite obviously inspired by Eleanor Rigby. It features a similar string arrangement.
