Hugo Chavez announced that he will outlaw representations of Father Christmas / Santa Claus and Christmas trees during this Christmas in Venezuela, claiming they're "American imports" The only symbols of Christmas allowed are those that refer to the Nativity.

Chavez already outlawed Halloween last year in Venezuela under the same allegation.

Well, he's actually factually correct. The image of Father Christmas as the Jolly Fatman wearing a red and white suit was concocted by the Coca Cola corporation (whose corporate logo is red and white...). "Trick or Treat" is also another American concoction. The original "Halloween" celebrations go way back to Pagan times thousands of years ago (predating Catholic "All Saints/All Souls" days...) and the Autumn Festival of "Samhain"....

In a way, I kinda wish someone had the guts and political will to outlaw the ramapant over-commercialisation and Americanisation of Christmas and Halloween in this country. I'm getting a bit bloody sick of the Christmas lights going on earlier and earlier every year. There is a Christmas Carol called "12 Days of Christmas", these days it feels more like it's "12 Weeks"........ <_<

I hope the fever spreads trough all latin america, tough I think nobody has courage for that. The easter rabbit has to be the next victim. In USA they should change the holiday name to Clausmas.

agreed...

oh please! christmas is a time for fun, love and giving, not correctness, and a time to be worrying about coglomerates or advertisting, and it's wrong to instruct someone on how to privately celebrate one of the best and most important holidays of the year IMO

give it a rest!

Does it need to last for two and a half fukkin' MONTHS.....??? I dont think so... In case you hadn't noticed it is NOVEMBER THE 10TH!!!! Nowhere NEAR Christmas, we should be bloody well talking about "Remembrance Day" not sodding Chrismas <_< ..... There were Christmas displays in the supermarkets about three weeks before we even had Halloween...... This is ludicrous.... Those of us who are over 25 remember that none of this would even begin until about the last week of November/beginning of December in days gone by...

We should all be concerned with the tacky, rampant commercialisation.. You can call me cynical if you want, but as far as I'm concerned it is FAR more cynical for businesses and corporations to be coining in on Christmas earlier and earlier every year, raking in more and more profits and making people on low incomes feel like utter pieces of sh!t because they cant bloody afford to even HAVE a decent Christmas... Talk about rubbing people's faces in it....

Viva Senor Chavez, is all I can say...

lol.. i think youve highlighted the very point that this geezer has made!

and why should 'fun' be confinded to crimbo? its the most disingenuous time of year! its all falseness and bullshyte! how can you have real fun on an imagination?..

bugger crimbo, i have fun all year round, apart from crimbo!

I agree with almost everything you say. The way corportation exploit Christmas to the bone earlier and earlier is shattering.

But in the end I believe that it's up to anyone's mind to decide how they want to celebrate Christmas. Who says Christmas should be all about shopping and presents. I believe Christmas is way more than that. For exemple having all my family together for Christmas is what matters to most to me around this time because there was a time when that may not happen. And Xmas presents mean less and less to me. Anyone is free to decide whatever Christmas means to them.

Besides, I didn't like someone tell me how should I celebrate Christmas, specially if my president was some t*** who is just doing that because he doesn't like the USA.

i object to being forced to celebrate crimbo even though i really dont want to.... i cant ignore it though id like to.

What the hell?? That's not the issue ... the point in the post, was the idea of banning Father Christmas and Christmas Tree's ... you've twisted it round into a controversy as to whether shops should bring their catalogues out before December .. it's totally irrelevant to what I was saying.

My point was that I think it's wrong for someone to "outlaw Father Christmas" ... I never had an issue with whether Christmas stuff is in stores before Halloween??

youve taken that quote right out of context, when its IN context its clearly pertainent to the question posed.

ie 'father christmas' is nothing more then a commercial invention aimed at making money... shops advertising crimbo goods in september/october/november is therefore relevant to this evolving thread.

For the record, I actually agree that July (which is the time Harrods set up their own Christmas displays) is way to early ... IMO Christmas stuff still shouldn't be in the stores now.

But, I don't much like being sworn at and talked down to for having different thoughts on the matter on the base issue, before it "evolved", that's all.

But he didn´t restric private celebrations, as far as I know. Santa Claus and the gifts thing on Christmas is the worst $h!t ever invented.

That´s because if people buy all the gifts they need to buy on November, they´ll probably buy a bit more until Christmas comes.

One thing you people from USA and Europe don´t understand is that Christmas in countries like Venezuela and most of latin America happens on the bloody peak of summer hotness, and to have trees with fake snow on them and an old men wearing glacial clothes decorating all the stores is equivalent to have an american flag everywhere. I think it´s pathetic we have a winter festival in the peak of summer. We have our own traditions that are being supressed by this american $h!t.

I think it's a bit extreme wanting to ban Father Christmas, it's only for the kids anyway, where's the harm? Christmas trees are tradition too, how can they ban them? I love decorating the tree with my mum, xmas music on in the background, it's great.

I do hate that shops start getting xmas stuff in so early though. I have never really been a fan of christmas but this year it will certainly be different, I'm looking forward to it, no dad or his side of the family, just us doing what WE want to do.

i think the post above yours explains it pretty well actually :)
