One thing you people from USA and Europe don´t understand is that Christmas in countries like Venezuela and most of latin America happens on the bloody peak of summer hotness, and to have trees with fake snow on them and an old men wearing glacial clothes decorating all the stores is equivalent to have an american flag everywhere. I think it´s pathetic we have a winter festival in the peak of summer. We have our own traditions that are being supressed by this american $h!t.

Wow, reading that really upset me, I can hardly believe it. I would be completely outraged. I really thought Latin America was one of the last bastions of resistance to that kind of commercialized, Americanized c**p. Fake snow displays in São Paulo?? Who is perpetrating this?

So, every adult that enjoys christmas is sad?

I think spending time with family and sharing presents is nice, not a chore.

Lol. There is no fake snow in Sao Paulo, I guess. When I was a kid my mother used to put pieces of cotton in the x-mas tree to imitate snow, cause we always felt like there should be snow on the Christmas tree... Just when I grew up I noticed how stupid it was because I never saw real snow in my entire life, except for photos and TV because winter here is much hotter then summer in Englad, I guess. And it also looked out of place the snow above the Holy Family because they didn´t have snow at that region, neither that type of trees.

Having said that, I think it´s not wrong to enjoy Christmas, as long as it doesn´t become a comercial date. My family is really big and there are some people who are poorer and some richer, and I remember some kids used to be upset at Christmas because they received cheaper gifts then their richer cousins. Obviously if they knew they parents couldn´t buy something more expensive they wouldn´t ask for it, but as we used to watch american christmas movies kids used to write letters for Santa Claus and they thought no gift was expensive or rare enough to the old men to bring... I think that was another smart creation to encourage kids to ask for better gifts.

What the hell?? That's not the issue ... the point in the post, was the idea of banning Father Christmas and Christmas Tree's ... you've twisted it round into a controversy as to whether shops should bring their catalogues out before December .. it's totally irrelevant to what I was saying.

My point was that I think it's wrong for someone to "outlaw Father Christmas" ... I never had an issue with whether Christmas stuff is in stores before Halloween??

It's all related to the same thing though mate... "Father Christmas" is a totally artificial construct... Same for Christmas Trees... If we take "Christmas" as meaning "Christ-Mass", as in a celebration to mark the supposed birth of Christ, then what the hell does some fat git in a red suit and Christmas trees have to do with it...? You dont see pine trees growing in the sodding Middle East do you...?

But, it's all irrelevant anyway - yet again this whole thing is basically a Pagan celebration (as in the winter festival of YULE..) hijacked first by Christians (how can anyone actually KNOW for a fact that Jesus was born on December 25th anyway...?) and then by Corporate greed... The meaning of "Christ-Mass" and "Yule" have been totally forgotten in the rampant commercialism, Corporatism and greed.... I absolutely applaud Hugo Chavez for actually wanting to bring some meaning and relevancy back to things.. Like Janet Jackson's Nipple said, why should South American Latin culture be hijacked by what is essentially a Western European/Anglo Saxon tradition....?

yes... why do adults need permission to party?

and why is family things confined to crimbo? surely any decent family are close all year round

Well put...

Families, not just dogs, are for life, not just for Christmas....

I think it's a bit extreme wanting to ban Father Christmas, it's only for the kids anyway, where's the harm? Christmas trees are tradition too, how can they ban them? I love decorating the tree with my mum, xmas music on in the background, it's great.

Viva Senor Chavez, is all I can say...

well no doubt GRIM has heard of Hugo Chávez before, maybe in connection with the Mía Maestro film Secuestro express  and the new film studio in Venezuela that is part of the Chávez fightback against American imperialism that is going on in the region and what the Americans are $h!tting themselves politically about when all these govts get together that join the fight. where as a lot of posters will be going on about how they love to decorate xmas trees etc etc they are failing/or ignorant of the wilder cultural context.

as the fight is not just about xmas trees, these countries are trying to get some power that will efffect trade/oil etc etc.

its a similar situation between georgia/russia/ukraine etc etc

You don't need permission, and family gatherings aren't confined to christmas. But it's just tradition, going out for a christmas meal etc. I think it's nice anyway.
