The UK music scene of 1976/1977 really needed punk to blow away the cobwebs of the mid 1970’s, as some of the worst in British music was inflicted on the poor music buying public.

After the heights of the 1960’s Beatles, Stones, Kinks, Who, to name just a few, and the early 1970’s we had Bowie, T Rex, Slade.

But then what happened :( ! We had musical geniuses like Showaddywaddy, Bay City Rollers, Boney M, Hot Chocolate, Paperlace, and the Rubettes. What happened indeed.

Even America was giving us bland soul like the Stylistics, or mor bands like Chicago, Boston, Starship, REO Speedwagon.

Punk gave as the SexPistols, Jam, Stranglers, Siouxsie, Blondie, followed a few years later with the new wave and new romantics, which put some excitement back into music.

Do you agree or were you a disco dancing guy in your heels, or a groovy gal in your flared jeans.

as i see it, and i was there...lol.. the 60's were a time of great innovation where the fashion was to experiment (c64-8) after that these groups matured, split, went on to do different things leaving the door open for a new sound... glam... which in turn slowly faded so by the mid 70's music had all but lost its way...

the greats of the 60's were now prog rock, or rock, glam was a joke... a parody of itself.. there was nothing going on.

coupled with the political situation of the time, punk not only spoke to the ordinary kid, but was a reaction against the pretencious 'prog rock' scene, and gave us what we wanted... good old fashioned guitar based blues/pop. call it mod, punk, new wave, britpop, indie... this is our traditional british favoured music type and long may it be so!

the time was right, punk filled the niche that existed in music/youth culture and had the political edge that america lacked.

punk brought politics, free thinking, political correctness, racial and sexual equality into youth culture.... GOOD.

I loved all those, REO Speedwagon, Chicaga, paperlace, rubettes. They all did it for me and they still do. :cheer:

Must admit, I was a big fan of Supertramp, they were quite big mid to late 70's, weren't they :cheer: And as for the Jam - loved them and still a huge fan of Weller

1974 - 1976 are arguably the worst three consecutive years in the history of Pop Music.

Although 1986 - 1988 runs it close.

Why was the Mid 1970’s so bad for musical creativity

so was the mid-70s really that bad then. we ARE living in 2006 if you didnt realize .

Although 1986 - 1988 runs it close.

id suggest that 87-89 were the second worst, as imho 86 had a few good tracks where 89 had nowt!

agreed about 74-6 though. my teenage years ruined by utter tripe, no wonder punk took off :)

What happened was that in the mid 70s British bands went completely over the top and recorded utterly unlistenable, uncommercial albums like Tales From Topographic Oceans (Yes) and A Passion Play (Jethro Tull). When both the rock fraternity and the general public rejected these overblown concept albums the bands did the wrong thing and recorded safe, sterile albums (Relayer and War Child) which the public and fans also rejected. With progressive rock killed off teenagers needed something to spend their hard earned allowances on and there's no way a British record company was going to promote black music, so a window was opened for punk.

Rock music promoted on children's television also had a lot to do with it :D
