Robbie Williams hits Perth today

28th November 2006, 6:00 WST

International pop idol Robbie Williams flies into Perth today to kick off the biggest tour this country has seen.

The West Australian understands the British megastar will arrive on a chartered flight and stay at the ***** ******** Hotel before two concerts at Subiaco Oval on Thursday and Friday nights for 90,000 fans.

The Australian leg of his Close Encounters World Tour has sold more than 470,000 tickets for nine stadium shows, smashing the attendance and gross revenue records of Madonna’s Girlie Show Tour of 1993.

Promoter Michael Chugg said no artist had almost filled Subiaco Oval twice on the same tour — until now.

“I knew it was going to be big because the guy is an unbelievable entertainer,†he said. “His audience is five to 70 (years of age).â€

The tour will be Williams’ third to Australia. His first in 2001 included a gig at the Perth Entertainment Centre and he played stadiums on the east coast in 2003.

During his last WA visit, the sports-mad star played three games of indoor soccer against local players and enjoyed a cruise on the Swan River.

Mr Chugg said demand was so strong Williams could have sold out two more shows in Sydney and one in Melbourne. The stage for this tour takes 77 trucks to transport around the country and is three times the size of that used by grunge legends Pearl Jam at the same venue last Saturday night.

Tickets are still available for both nights.

Melee in the lobby as Robbie lobs in WA

29th November 2006, 6:30 WST

Pop megastar Robbie Williams went to bizarre lengths to avoid fans and media yesterday, covering his head with a towel and using an entourage of security and management to escape attention after he arrived in Perth for his record-breaking tour.

Williams touched down at Perth Airport in his own private jet and stepped into one of three luxury Mercedes Benz vans on the tarmac.

His only gesture to fans before he was whisked away was a peace sign.

Williams then shielded himself with the towel as he was driven past waiting fans into a private underground carpark at the Hyatt Regency. The hotel’s lobby swarmed with security and management as a handful of people hoped for a glimpse.

The singer’s tour has smashed Australian ticket sales records and his concerts tomorrow and on Friday will be the biggest Perth has seen. The Subiaco performances will be his first since cancelling his South-East Asian tour, citing exhaustion.

Tour promoter Michael Chugg said Williams had flown to Perth from his Los Angeles home and had arrived tired. He expected the star to recuperate in his suite and not go out. But not long after arriving, the three vans — driven by men communicating with hand signals — left the hotel in a co-ordinated effort to throw off the waiting throng.

Star-struck Tanya Cox, 28, and Silvia Walker, 39, were disappointed they missed Williams. “We don’t want to stalk him, just to bump into him in the lobby,†Ms Walker said.

The superstar will gross about $15 million from his Perth concerts.
