Robbie keeps faith with fans

December 02, 2006 12:00am

FOR someone who openly admits performing live concerts is the least favourite part of his job, Robbie Williams knows how to put on a good show - in more ways than one.

When his Australian tour opened in Perth on Thursday, an energised Williams thrilled 45,000 fans with his unique mix of cheesy cabaret and effortless rock star.

If he does hate being on stage, he hides it brilliantly.

Williams's record-breaking world tour was briefly derailed when the exhausted star cancelled its Asian leg.

Fans were concerned that Australia - the final leg - would also be axed, despite Williams having sold 450,000 tickets nationally.

"Did you think I'd come or were you a little bit worried?" Williams teased the audience.

His arrival in Australia followed a five-week break, which recharged the singer, who looked fit, tanned and healthy - flashing his flat stomach to the crowd at several points.

Williams threatened to retire after his 2003 Australian tour.

This world tour, he told the crowd, would be his last "for a very long time".

"This retirement thing is good. I've got to come back and keep retiring in Australia," he said.

Abrasive opener Radio was followed by wall-to-wall stadium anthems such as Rock DJ, Millennium, Tripping, Strong, Feel and Monsoon.

Williams' immense hi-tech stage was jaw-dropping and not only dwarfed U2's most recent stage, but was far more user-friendly for the entire stadium.

A faithful cover of Back for Good, by his previous band, Take That, was a highlight, as was the most dysfunctional of stadium anthems, the bleak Come Undone.

Williams's first Melbourne show will be at Telstra Dome

:D :D :D

Robbie Williams

Subiaco Oval, Perth, November 30. AAMI Stadium, Adelaide, tomorrow. Aussie Stadium, Sydney, December 9-10. Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane, December 13-14. Bookings 132 849. Telstra Dome, Melbourne, December 17-18. Bookings 136 100. Tickets $99-$149.

THE opening night of the final leg of Robbie Williams's mega-successful Close Encounters tour supported the argument that he is the greatest performer of his generation.

It was not without its problems, however. At the back of the venue, people had to contend with video that was slightly out of synch with audio. Approximately 100m from the stage, we were relying on the massive and, it must be said, absolutely sharp screens, but the slight delay between sound and vision was a constant irritation. Up front, though, they looked like they were having the time of their lives.

It's hard not to love Williams. His banter was expletive heavy but always good natured, even when complaining about the weather, the cricket and the lack of girls at his hotel. He has a back catalogue with enough hits to fill a two-hour set, and it is difficult to recall a performer having as much fun on stage. He will do practically anything to ensure his audience is enjoying themselves, too.

This included calling his best friend Jonathan Wilkes to the stage, for what would be called a turn if it were occurring in your lounge room. They chased each other around, orchestrated a crowd singalong and even managed a rendition of the Bee Gees' Stayin' Alive. Such tomfoolery in the midst of technological innovation was a masterstroke, for it showed that Williams was not relying on the spectacle and would be just as entertaining should he come around to your place.

(Space does not permit discussion of the size of the set, but suffice to say that the way it dwarfed Subiaco Oval's northern stand signalled the beginning of a new scale of concert production.)

Despite complaining of jet lag and being rusty from five weeks off, Williams sang beautifully. Featuring only a couple of songs from his new album, Rudebox, he crammed in as many of his hits, including Rock DJ, Make Me Pure, Sin Sin Sin, She's the One and Let Me Entertain You, as would fit.

He also revisited his boy band days in Take That by trouncing a handful of their chart successes before offering a tender reading of Back for Good. Williams recognises a great song when he hears it, and knows how to share it with 40,000 friends.

There may be questions over whether the equipment can deliver a quality experience to all members of the audience, but there were none about the star.

One more thing... before Robbie left Perth, he visited Lords Sports Club again on Saturday evening for another game of soccer. (That's where I work!) Yes I missed out again! :P After his game, he was at the cafe buying a coffee. As he picked up his coffee, he touched the girls hand and said to her "you have a lovely face!"

 He so wasn't looking at her face!

I have a feeling faces are not importnant to Robbie at all !!!
