Luton Town manager Mike Newell has launched a scathing attack on women officials following his team's home defeat against QPR.

Newell was furious that assistant referee Amy Rayner failed to award his side a penalty during the 3-2 loss.

He said: "She shouldn't be here. I know that sounds sexist but I am sexist.

"This is Championship football. This is not park football, so what are women doing here? It is tokenism - for the politically-correct idiots."

Newell was incensed that Rayner and referee Andy D'Urso failed to award his side a spot-kick when QPR defender Marcus Bignot tangled with Carlos Edwards in the penalty box.

"We have a problem in this country with political correctness," added Newell. "And bringing women into the game is not the way to improve refereeing and officialdom.

"It is absolutely beyond belief. When do we reach a stage when all officials are women because then we are in trouble?

"It is bad enough with the incapable referees and linesmen we have but if you start bringing in women, you have big problems."

But Bignot, who used to manage a women's football team in Birmingham, was astounded by Newell's remarks.

He said: "Comments like those will stop female officials from trying to make their way in the game.

"Amy Rayner is a role model and full credit goes to her. What would he have said if it had been a male assistant referee making that decision?

"It's easy to blame officials and Mike Newell is entitled to his opinion but remarks like that do not help the game

Any thoughts on his comments?

Well i was at the match so i can see were Newells coming from. The Lineswomen was awful, but ive seen alot of awful male officials as well, sex doesnt come into it.

Amy Rayner

The name just brings a shiver down my spine. :(

Personally the only woman i've ever seen ref is her and she was awful. Possibly the worst ref i've ever seen, but I don't think its fair to judge female refs just on her performance.

I don't think women should be involved as i don't think men should be involved in womens football.

oh jeez! we're not in the stone age any more.

There is no problem with women being officials. Judging by some of the decisions made by the big name refs recently, the argument that they're not as good has as many holes as a seive.

yes i think women should be involed because it is not fair that lads can play and not girls. i think girls should be on the football team with the lads because they could do so much better than some of the lads that are on the foorball teams now.

There is no way thet men and women should EVER play together! No man would ever tackle a woman because if he hurt her and broke her leg he'd be branded as woman beater and all that sh!te. There's nothing wrong with women officiating but keep the playing seperate. That goes for ALL sports too. No other sport (that I can think of) combines the two so why on earth should football!
