THE Princess of Pop is back where she belongs - thrilling thousands of adoring fans with an amazing stage show.

Kylie's triumphant return got off to the best possible start, even before she took to the stage in Sydney.

Celeb pals, including Sir Elton John, David Furnish, Sir Cliff Richard, Dame Shirley Bassey and Olivia Newton-John, packed the plucky singer's dressing room with goodwill messages and lavish bouquets.

More blooms came from rockers U2, in the city for three sell-out gigs, which included the message: "Call us if you're up to a midnight jam session."

Last night Bono went one better and joined Kylie, 38, on stage at the Sydney Entertainment Centre for a surprise duet of Kids.

Kylie was clearly overjoyed to kick off the Showgirl Homecoming tour after winning her battle with breast cancer.

Before Saturday night's show, she said: "Just to be here to have the opportunity to do it, I feel quite proud of that.

"I'm thrilled to be back, I've been looking forward to this for such a long time.

"Generally I'm like 10 minutes late, but this is a year and a half so I'm fashionably late. Thanks so much for your thoughts and wishes and I'm glad to be here." Then her closest friends and family formed an impromptu guard of honour as Kylie emerged on stage in the first of many stunning costumes - a pink glittery showgirl outfit with a huge train of ostrich feathers and a matching head-dress, by designer John Galliano.

Greeted by the cheers of 10,000 ecstatic fans, Kylie was moved by the thunderous applause. But ever the professional, she wasn't overwhelmed and after two minutes signalled to the band and launched into Better The Devil You Know.

In the two-and-a-half hour extravaganza that followed, she belted out her greatest hits, including In Your Eyes, Spinning Around and On A Night Like This, plus - in tribute to Madonna - a version of Vogue.

The hectic set also involved seven costume changes which, after months of gruelling chemotherapy, she admitted she found a little stressful.

The spectacular designs by the likes of Karl Lagerfeld and Dolce & Gabbana mixed plenty of distinctive looks.

At one point Kylie was clad head-to-toe in leopard-spots, then she was in a punky PVC mini dress and thigh-high boots, then in an 80s-inspired outfit complete with jewelled jacket and trilby.

The outfits weren't as skimpy as of old, but then she's a "different person" now. So sorry, boys, that means no gold hotpants.

But she certainly didn't skimp on the old razzle dazzle - her stunning Bollywood sequence, choreographed by Akram Khan, was absolutely breathtaking.

The showbiz tradition is to "leave them wanting more" and that's just what Kylie did. Her weekend shows are proof, if any was needed, that she's a survivor.

Kylie is officially back in business - and the best is yet to come.

'I DREAMT OF THIS MOMENT'

Eva Simpson & Caroline Hedley

KYLIE said she was cross with herself for not thanking everyone properly on stage.

Our spy says: "She began to talk about 'having dreamt of this moment' but feared falling apart if she spoke at length about everyone's kindness - so then she quickly decided to continue with the show.

Her parents Carol and Ron assured her nothing needed to be said - her emotions were written all over her face."

TEARS AS LIGHT DIM

Eva Simpson & Caroline Hedley

AS the lights dimmed, tearful roadies and backstage crew came out to the audience to watch Kylie.

We're told: "Stage hands who've seen the biggest names have an affection for Kylie they don't have for others."
