"Mood" has now been #1 for 8 weeks. It also spent quite a long time at #2 so this is especially noteworthy though it's doing it with some of the lowest numbers I can recall. With a decent lead over "positions", it'll probably go for a 9th week. This might be spelling the end however just because The Kid LAROI is bolting up the chart this week with "WITHOUT YOU" which isn't on the ARIA Chart because ARIA, but they've confirmed today that it will debut next week, likely in the top 10. After 16 weeks, "Midnight Sky" finally hits the top 10, Miley's first non-collaboration to do so since "Malibu" in 2017. Yesterday it was close to 40C over here so suffice to say, Australia is always a little slow on the Christmas spirit. But hey, maybe this year we won't be totally on fire whilst listening to "It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas" en masse. Tangentially, Australia this week has its own The Neales with Jam Mountain Music, which I did not know existed until I saw it on the ARIA Chart this week. It's a charity single from Tasmania and running more or less entirely on sales but not from iTunes.

For the first time ever, AC/DC have a 3 week reign at #1 on the ARIA Chart. In doing so, they assert their dominance over their successor of Australian bands who sell albums by the truckload, Powderfinger. From 1998 to 2009, Powderfinger's last 5 albums all debuted at #1 with varying levels of multi-platinum sales each. They vaguely reformed this year to do a 'live' stream for Beyond Blue which is an extremely based thing to do. This year also marked the 20th anniversary of their most successful album "Odyssey Number Five" (the only album that can boast TWO triple j Hottest 100 winners [which imo are both only mid-tier at best on that stellar of a tracklist]) which has been popping up in the chart often this year. They've now put out a new album entirely of unreleased songs which would probably go to #1 on most weeks but alas. Miley Cyrus scores her 6th top 10 album, she previously hit #1 with "Breakout" & "Bangerz". Recent breakout Western Australian stars Spacey Jane chart thanks to a vinyl re-release of their 2017 EP, while Steps have their highest charting album in 20 years at #26. The Smashing Pumpkins have previously made the top 10 with every album since "Siamese Dream", but now lowly enter at #36 with their latest album. Next week Shawn Mendes will challenge AC/DC I guess.

Do you know if My Head & My Heart by Ava Max managed to make the top 100 singles?

It hasn't cracked the Spotify chart so it's pretty unlikely at this stage. Kings & Queens took months to chart here though so that might not say much.

Ah ok thanks. I know iTunes isn’t much of an indicator but it’s doing well there and Apple Music has it around the 100 mark I think.

Yeah that's not bad at all. I feel like you need to be around #30-#50 on Apple before it's viable to chart without Spotify top 200 presence.

True, it might be a chance to chart after Christmas.

You’re right, Kings & Queens took a while to chart.

Wow ‘Mood’ seems unmovable in Australia. Great to see AC/DC have three weeks at the top there too and yes at Mariah top 20 in the albums doing better than the I’m anyway, does it normally chart there each year?

She's off to a slower start than usual this year but that was also true of last year, so it seems the big couple days of enormous Christmas streams are mattering more than pure sales, making it more and more lopsided in its progression.

I wonder if it can challenge Michael Buble in the years to come.

Wow, Steps album made the top 30 :o Also the Xmas album seems like it was a good idea for Delta, is showing some decent longevity at the top end of the chart.

Baffling state of affairs has "Mood" #1 for 9 weeks. This reign should be ended next week courtesy of a likely #1 debut from Taylor Swift. Not likely enough to bet your house on it, but figures across the board are promising. The Kid LAROI's worst song has finally been let on the chart and is now #1 on Spotify, so there's a decent chance he gets to #1 at the start of the new year. After months underneath the chart, the magic of the Today's Top Hits & Hot Hits Australia buttons simultaneously being pressed means that Glass Animals have their 2nd ever top 50 hit with "Heat Waves". It will probably outpeak "Gooey" in the near future, and get much higher in the slightly less near future of February. Justice for "Your Love (Déjà Vu)". "Someone You Loved" is now the first song to ever spent 90 weeks in the top 50, but is at a slight risk of dropping out in these next two weeks. It's moderately interesting to me that for what will probably end up as one of the top 10 sellers of 2020, it didn't really get a Spotify Wrapped rebound to be seen on the chart.

AC/DC are still #1 so I still don't need to change the subtitle for a 4th week. By choosing to tack "Senorita" onto the previous album, Shawn Mendes assured higher numbers for his self-titled, but nothing to fall back on to save his next album. It's still a relatively fine #2 debut but the lack of sticking hits might end up hurting it a lot in the coming weeks. All 6 Arctic Monkeys studio albums have debuted at #4 or higher, and they at least keep up this pace with their new live album. YUNGBLUD's first album did not crack the top 50 here but some years of brewing popularity sees him in at #6 this time. There's yet another Hilltop Hoods instrumental album, and fascinatingly, Tame Impala are already a nostalgia band as "Currents" re-enters the top 50 ahead of "The Slow Rush". Next week is probably Taylor Swift's for the taking but I'm less certain than I usually am. We're not done with live albums as Cold Chisel have an auspiciously dated live album coming up this week, while The Avalanches should also figure relatively highly.

Loving the AC/DC dominance!!

Wow at ‘Mood’ still number one, is Mariah likely to be Christmas number one?

AC/DC denying Shawn Mendes a #1, that is peak Australia.

Lol at Blinding Lights going back in the top 5 from the Spotify wrapped/Rosalia remix boost. That song will never die.

This year has been a series of mostly 6 week #1's punctuated by Taylor Swift getting 1 week at #1 before going on her merry way. This is the week that allows this statement to be made. Well, at least for the rest of this week that second part is only implied, but this is her succeeding. Most of her album cracks the top 50, where I don't think there are any omissions, just that the bottom end couldn't quite make the cut. ARIA have once again truncated credits but if you ignore that, Haim have their 3rd top 20 hit and I make the baffling statement that The National have an ARIA top 50 hit single in 2020. She has the only debuts this week though it's interspliced with a return of Australia's own version of The Neales in Jam Mountain Music, who are now back up to #23, I have no idea where they'll be next week. In fact I can't really make many calls about next week because of ARIA's impossible to predict 'eligibility', and the influx of already hard to predict sales titans. What I mean by this is that LadBaby could have an ARIA top 20 or even top 10 hit next week, and also there's that new Ed Sheeran song which I feel could sneak into the top 40 but not much higher. I am fairly positive that Mariah Carey will return to #1, and it's quite possible that Wham! will score a new #2 peak. Michael Buble & Ariana Grande are in an intense battle for Australia's 3rd favourite Christmas song, comfortably won by Buble last year while Ariana was only 7th but she's having a great showing so far. Australia mostly just listens to the same Christmas songs ever year, but we are looking at new first time top 50 berths for Sia's "Snowman" and Kelly Clarkson's "Underneath The Tree", the latter just missing out last year, while the former is looking to interrupt Paul Kelly's previously unassailable status for the definitive Australian Christmas* song. Taylor Swift has also done an early job of the Christmas chart exile, so it'll probably be mostly just her songs leaving the top 50 next week but I simply must point out that for at least this week, we have freedom from "Someone You Loved". It also means that the longest top 50 runs are pretty easy to remember right now, as Lewis stands on 90 weeks, and "Dance Monkey" has managed to tie "Shape Of You" and "Perfect" on 80 weeks. Prior to seeing Christmas streaming figures, I'm ambitiously expecting "Dance Monkey" to stay in the top 50 next week but "Someone You Loved" could go either way.

*December 21st

Taylor Swift scores a #1 album, something the band Evermore could never manage to do. Something nobody has managed to do is score two #1 albums in such quick succession only 20 weeks apart. David Bowie came moderately close to doing so in 5 weeks in 2016 when his Best Of had more longevity than "Blackstar" but it only crept up to #3. Proving that Christmas charts are a crapshoot for predictions, Delta Goodrem has rushed up to #2 this week meaning she may well be a contender for #1, however Taylor Swift does have CD sales coming in next week which could maintain her standing, alongside looming threats of AC/DC presents and Buble streams. Bafflingly, The Avalanches released an album, moreso, they did it in December. Their comeback album in 2016 actually did net them their first ever #1 but this tough battle ground has them settling for #4. They're ahead of a live Cold Chisel album or in non-Australian speak, the band of that cowboy yelling from the clouds. I mostly just love the fact that it's a February 29th performance, as you don't see a lot of those. Thelma Plum's very rad Indigenous flag coloured vinyl has been delayed more times than I can count but it seems people are finally getting their hands on it for a strong re-entry. Kid Cudi actually manages his highest charting album ever (apart from KIDS SEE GHOSTS, which is incidentally a popular vinyl seller even still). I'm also surprised that in such a week, Jack Harlow can get a top 50 album. Next week will probably have Paul McCartney landing in the top 10 as the only significant debut.

amazing for Willow and Evermore

Well done Taylor in Australia as well.

Delta boosted into the top 2 again this week!

I'll level with you, it was exciting the first time, but 3 years in a row of a pre-ordained #1 is boring to the point of not wanting to write about it further. I can at least note that in the Christmas standings, "Last Christmas" has gone from being what must have been the longest running #3 hit, having spent 9 weeks there to now a 1 week at #2 peaker. "Santa Tell Me" is also in the top 10 for the first time ever, and "Underneath The Tree" in the top 50 for the first time ever (same goes for "Snowman" but that hasn't been trying for quite as long). Brenda Lee should probably be pretty close to the top 10 except her split versions on Spotify have once again not been combined and wait for it...ARIA seemingly didn't count *any* streams from Christmas Eve. We should be absolutely inundated with the stuff considering that Frank Sinatra did half a million more streams than "Don't Start Now" on Spotify alone but alas. Ed Sheeran debuts near the bottom of the top 50 so he can challenge for the biggest ever climb within the top 50, that to my knowledge belongs to "3" by Britney Spears climbing 50-07. This week Ed Sheeran drops to only having the equal 3rd longest running top 50 hits as "Dance Monkey" laps up its 81st. Also ARIA have seemingly addressed my annual concern over "Do They Know It's Christmas?" being attributed to Band Aid 30, as their site no longer says '30' on it. It still has the 2014 artwork, and the chart statistics for that version, but hey, someone noticed I guess.

In typical Taylor Swift fashion, she remains at #1 for more than 1 week. I am tempting fate by saying that this hegemony at the top means Michael Buble's "Christmas" has missed the top 3 for the first year ever, but it's entirely possible that Christmas Day streams (and strangely lingering sales) will push him back up next week. Paul McCartney scores his 5th top 10 album in the last 30 years, I curiously discovered that excluding Wings, he's never had a #1 album in his lengthy career. This also applies to King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard although their charting career has been compressed into about 4 years with just as many albums. The vinyl release of "K.G." brings it into the top 10, I suspect a couple weeks later and it might have challenged for #1 but alas. Eminem has a deluxe re-issue that you probably knew about, and most bizarrely, New Zealand's L.A.B. who are in their home country making "Dance Monkey"'s chart performance here seem relatively understated have somehow managed to debut their new album on this week of all weeks. This week being what it is means that Lewis Capaldi & Post Malone's albums are pushed out of the top 50 for the first time ever, but fret not as we will soon return to our weekly dosage of them, Maroon 5's singles collection and whatever else people are streaming 5 songs from en masse once people stop buying albums again.

Nice to see Wham and Mariah in the top 2 here as well. As you say the uk will be at this point in a few decembers when they reach the top 2 EVERY year. Nice that you’s don’t have to suffer from Ladbaby disrupting the genuine hits.

Y'know I completely forgot about that one. I'm fairly sure LadBaby SHOULD be in the top 50 this week on the strength of huge sales but hasn't been included. He was last year at like #97.
