April 7, 20205 yr Author Won in 2016. Came second in semi-final 2, second with the jury vote and second in the televote in the final Plenty of controversy about this winner - some pointed out that it broke the "no political songs" rule. Others weren't happy because they thought Australia should have won and didn't really like 1944. This was the first year of the split vote reveal which really ramped up the tension. Perhaps surprisingly, it got more 12s from the juries than Australia did, given it ended up trailing by 109 points at the end of the jury vote. It polarised juries too - it didn't get any points from a massive 16 juries. A divisive winner, and one I have seen cited as being the worse ever winner of the contest.
April 7, 20205 yr Why does a song have to GO SOMEWHERE? Because otherwise it just feels repetitive and you can't tell if it's starting or ending lol but it feels like it's been going on forever.

My favourite Eurovision entry of all time. Ukraine deserved the win. The most powerful and emotional performance on the Eurovision stage and probably always will be. Ukraine was going through war in the Donbass region in Eastern Ukraine (and still are), and they'd just lost their Crimea to Russia which is what '1944' is about. Jamala was incredible, she felt that song in her bones and you could see it in her performance. Her vocals was faultless every time. The staging was top-class, it didn't need the flashy and expensive technology used by Russia and Australia, Ukraine have talented people and they know how to use lighting and camera-work and THAT tree at the end. The tree for me symbolises the rebirth of Ukraine, a nation getting a second chance, this time away from Russia's grip.
April 7, 20205 yr It's funny. I was wholly team Australia in 2016 and still am but 1944 is BEAUTIFUL and Jamala delivered a flawless and enchanting performance so I could never say she didn't deserve to win. That whole top 3 was easily one of the best top 3s in Eurovision history.
April 7, 20205 yr Author Came second in 2014. Topped semi-final 1. The Netherlands comeback started in 2013 when they placed 9th in the final after nearly a decade of poor results and many domestic proposals to withdraw. With renewed confidence in 2014 the country entered Calm After the Storm which received top marks from 8 countries - Estonia, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland. They reached the final four more times in the decade but this was their highest scoring entry.

Any of the top 3 that year would have been a deserving winner, even the 4th place Bulgaria too, but for me that year's contest belonged to Ukraine.
April 7, 20205 yr Author Won in 2013. Topped semi-final 1. Looking back, it's easy to forget that Denmark made the finals 8 times in the decade, such was the average nature of their entries. While Emmelie received two fewer 12s than Azerbaijan, she got points from all but one country - San Marino.
April 7, 20205 yr Author I'm totally a fan of 1944. I can see why people like Sound of Silence but I really don't like it. Edited April 7, 20205 yr by Colm

While I was rooting for Norway I was very happy with Denmark winning.
April 7, 20205 yr Author A banger is a dance-pop tune that actually BANGS in a club. Only Teardrops isn't even a bop. Do I have to do a YouTube tutorial on this? B-)
April 7, 20205 yr "Sebi" was boring and overrated and it literally goes nowhere and zalagasper were entitled, ungrateful and incredibly rude in Tel Aviv. I have no regrets in ranking it below a trashy so-bad-it's-good bop :D You have no regrets about being wrong then xx

Even Merriam-Webster disagrees with you. BANGER slang : an energetic song that is very striking or extraordinary i.e. it's subjective. Only Teardrops is a banger. End of discussion.

I barely listened to it pre-contest compared to the ones I was into (Australia, Bulgaria, Malta, Russia, et al) which certainly contributed to that, but after it won, I watched it back to try and understand what happened and I really got it. And it has grown in to one of my favourite entries of the decade, I think. That production alone is chilling, but in the performance the part with the tree STILL gives me goosebumps.

Azerbaijan got more 12s really? :o I have this in my memory as a runaway winner, though I did host a big Eurovision party that night, there were a lot of shots, it was a great night, but I guess leading up to the contest, it felt like such an obvious winner I always assumed it blitzed the field. Was expecting this nearer to top 3. Great entry anyway!

Country music is rarely done well in Eurovision but this is the exception, I think for a lot of people it took the actual performance on stage rather than just the studio version for people to get why this was so good. This was my favourite 2014 entry listening to all the songs before the contest despite having VERY little hype, that was until a certain performance from the 2nd semi-final changed everything. April 7, 20205 yr Author Came 3rd in 2015. We haven't visited an entry from 2015 since number 21. Such was the staggering voting pattern in 2015 where 59% of all votes cast went to the entries in the Top 5 we have a situation where the song that came 3rd scores higher than 6 of the decades winners. Only 8 of the 12s available went to any entry outside the Top 5. Italy pulled in 9 of them - Albania, Cyprus, Greece, Israel, Malta, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Spain - more than the song that tool second place.
