With the charts now being a giant pile of c**p, despite being very good a few years ago, what would you say the turning point for the UK Singles/Albums Chart was when it began to get really c**p?

Discuss.

The end of 2004, that was the begining of dire sales -_-

2003 was the beginning of dire sales, with the highest seller of that year not even clearing 600K -_-

Start of 2000.

The rise of the chavs putting Eminem and company in the charts.

All this indie $h!t which was good at first but now when you have 50000 bands releasing the same bland c**p on a weekly basis it is a bit overkill :(

Sales were still good until about 2004 but meh the charts died at the end of the 90s - for me the 90s were the best 94-99 for sales and for music.

The very late 90s/turn of the century. 1999 was absolutely dire, imo, despite having superior sales -_-

The 2000s started off well, with Manic Street Preachers grabbing the first new no.1 of the milenium, and it all went downhill from there.

2000, the year we had over 40 #1s, a hell of a load of 1 week runners at #1
BEPS sold over 600,000 sugar.

In my opinion, the best era for pop music was the 20 year period from the start of 1965 through to the end of 1984.

I consider the chart was not very exciting from the mid 1990's when suddenly nearly everything seemed to peak the week it was released, but downloads have thankfully added an extra dimention since then.

The singles chart is not dead, it's just evolving with modern technology.

Also, these days it's not just mainly music specialists who sell records, but supermarkets, which have other considerations to bear in mind.

Also, there are so many other entertainment options these days to what there were 20 or 30 years ago.

The turning point was 1st May 1999.

That was the day that Westlife "I Swear It Again" went to #1 on the singles chart after a lengthy amount of hype from their manager Louie Walsh & record label boss Simon Cowell.

It was the first time that a manufactured "boyband" debuted at #1 with their debut single.

The charts have gone downhill since that date.

Agreed, but take Westlife out then I'd say the musical quality is the best it's been for ten years as there aren't that many manufactured artists with the intention to make money as that died at aroun 2002ish so the singles sales went down bur instead we have mostly artists who are in to make music like it should be. It's especially good to see so much brit-pop (yes not Indie as I keep saying) doing so well instead of the same old same old. -_- Things are starting to go up again now with the way downloads are used in the charts and I think that physical singles will be released as soon as they're played on the radio again soon like what happened in the 80s.

Well, from sales figures the 2000s have been the worst years on record, but in my personal opinion music started to go downhill from the late 90s -_-

I dont think they have died  although Westlife's The Rose & Akon's Smack That could be the start :puke2:

you cant say what year is best over another one as every year will be good stuff and utter $h!t. people will always continue to buy the records that get the most radio play and will be mostly ignorant to 94% of music avalible worldwide.

tbh i dont care what year a records from, where a records from or who its by. as long as it doesnt bore me when it comes on tv. thats the main point.

i would say Westlife are still successful as the 'quality standards' are still there. thats the stds that that Westlife brand means in the marketplace not based on a comparison with anyone else, no dodgy rap albums for them, just the same old stuff for the same old people.

You have a good point agreed. But the era I quoted was prior to the video becoming fully fledged.

Video = image, so the power of the image was enhanced, perhaps sacrificing a little the influence of the tune.

The sight of a handful of men sitting on stools, gazing into the middle distance whilst singing ballads seems to be a popular one. But I just don't get it??? For me, it's tune first, image second.

When that song about candles became the biggest-selling single of all time.

...but for me it has come alive again.

It died in mid 1995 when most singles entered at their peak positions. This made them uninteresting.

Now with the downloads singles climb go back down and some climb back again. HMMMM! interesting.

As for the music this century as we've been flooded with rubbish such as:

R&B, Hip Hip, Westlife, McFly, Busted, Beyonce.
