September 28, 20204 yr In the year that trance went mainstream this appeared on a record number of dance compilations, which where going though a very bountiful period themselves, meaning that this song appeared on more sales units (either album or single) than any other song. Ever! [citation needed] I used to have the same thought! Oddly enough it rarely pops up on compilations these days considering how ubiquitous it was in 1999, and if it does it's more often than not the original version you've posted, rather than I don't know if that's a licensing thing (perhaps Ministry of Sound won't license the UK version, but the original is easier to source from the original European label), or if it's simply because the people compiling these albums now are too young to remember which version was popular in the UK!
September 28, 20204 yr Author I don't know if that's a licensing thing (perhaps Ministry of Sound won't license the UK version, but the original is easier to source from the original European label), or if it's simply because the people compiling these albums now are too young to remember which version was popular in the UK! I couldn't find the UK hit version after a while searching so I gave up. I know we've discussed compilations before - I think the people who compile compilations don't care as much as we do
September 28, 20204 yr I couldn't find the UK hit version after a while searching so I gave up. I know we've discussed compilations before - I think the people who compile compilations don't care as much as we do  Indeed! I suspect a lot of times with licensing ancient songs it becomes harder - maybe impossible - to get the versions that were big at the time, but I also think a lot of the 'wrong versions' that appear are due to incompetence. For example, I bought a compilation the other day with the correct/hit version of Sun Is Shining by Bob Marley vs Funkstar Deluxe, yet most other compilations that feature it use some edit with the intro chopped off. So that proves the hit version is still out there to license, it's just a question of whether the compilers can be bothered to do a smidgen of research to find out what the hit version was.
September 28, 20204 yr Author 3rd place - Shania Twain - That Don't Impress Me Much 6.5 UO_Wcq1B10w This has always been a quite enjoyable song for me. I expected it to do well here. A solid pop song and Shania has bags of charisma in the vocal. I don't think she bettered this song, in my books. Edited September 28, 20204 yr by Colm
September 28, 20204 yr Author 2nd place - Britney Spears - ...Baby One More Time 7.8 C-u5WLJ9Yk4 This will surprise some of you but this is more of a grower than an instant hit for me. If I'd put any effort into listening to it in detail I may have warmed to it sooner. Max Martin's handy-work is all over it - the frequent use of the orchestra-hit makes it an exciting impression. I need to investigate his other work from the late 90s - I know there was plenty of Back Street Boys songs that need to be re-visited.
September 28, 20204 yr Where did you get the top 10 singles from? They're not on the Wiki page for 1999 nor on the OCC pages.
September 28, 20204 yr Author 1st place - Eiffel 65 - Blue (Da Ba Dee) 7.9 68ugkg9RePc This will be heresy to some, having this above Britney. I'm sure there are others who would swap it with Flat Beat. There's always been a pathos to this song that connected with me. It's not high art. It's got a terrible video. I can definitely see ...Baby One More Time overtaking this at some point. They scored very closely.

September 28, 20204 yr in regards to 98, I think some of the ballads you hated were ok, I do really liked the Leann Rimes song back in the day, haven't heard it in ages but it would probably be my #1 even above Cher :D I also liked the Savage Garden one, even if it's a bit sappy I admit... very shocked at your 99 results. I do hate that Blue song, for me it's as silly as Whitfield-Saturday Night or worst, and I do certainly prefer Mr Oizo, which I ended up buying as single :D my top 3 would be 1 ATB 2 Britney 3 Shania. I was totally obsessed with the ATB song and I heard it recently and still sounds great.
September 29, 20204 yr 1994 was another "aggghhh!" year indeed for big-sellers. I agree with top spot, Doop should be lower, Whigfield is better, Mariah crucified a classic, (so bad that Harry Nilsson died) and deserves only to be above Blobby and D:Ream is top 3! Wet Wet Wet and Bon Jovi are middling mehs for me. More to catch up on, Ive been away!
September 29, 20204 yr 1995 has a bunch of classics, so much hate for Wonderwall! It's a genuine classic - I guess it's down to being a teenager then and hating overplay, cos it certainly appeals to older folk. It's right up there with Gangsta's Paradise - the first Gangsta Rap track with wide-ranging appeal and it's Stevie Wonder song to boot - Take That (Barlow showing he can write a CHOON when he tries) and fab EBTG. Not apologising but Earth Song was massive cos it's OTT message was to save the planet, 25 years later no-one listened obv, and it's even more relevant than it was at the time. His Self-Messianic stance in the video showed he was mentally losing it by now, but it was effective. You Are Not Alone is an R.Kelly dirge, reason enough to place it bottom given he was marrying a 15-year-old around that time. Funny he should give it to Michael..... Think Twice I loved at the time, though took ages to warm to (not a natural celine fan, I have to be convinced) but it's not as good as I thought it was back then.

Nowadays, as soon as he starts to sing I cringe and switch to another song. Edited September 29, 20204 yr by Colm
September 30, 20204 yr 1996 was a good year, I pretty much like all of them! Personally I'd reverse the order of the Spice Girls tracks, Pater Andre would still be last (but I like it) but Killing Me Softly would be lower cos I'm old and love Roberta Flack's version. Gina G is great fun, yes should have won Eurovision, though it would be down the lower end for me in the list. mark Morrison I'd also struggle to listen to an entire album, but not cos his voice, more cos of his ego, Mack is fab though.
September 30, 20204 yr 1998 is pretty good too, Teletubbies excepted, and Elton John's I can't stand, sorry - I didn't rate the original at the time, grew to tolerate it, then quite like it, then hate it after this. I love Elton, and I understand why it's huge, but I don't ever want to hear it again. Puff daddy would be above Elton, and for much the same reasons, though in the case of the original Every Breath You Take is a dark, moody, troubling classic, where I'll Be Missing You is mawkish as almost every tribute record to a recent lost celebrity is. The rest of the list I'd keep the order more or less, and agree with the views, except Spice Girls would be a bit higher :)
September 30, 20204 yr Ooh 1998 was naff! Poor ol Isaac hayes, though it's no Shaft, that's for sure  Cher is head and shoulders over everything else. I could separate those joint tracks, Boyzone is a decent song, albeit it not a Lloyd-webber best of, Ghetto Superstar would join them on a par with Salty Balls but without the humour, Celine's is still not too bad, Leanne is a dreadful dirge, always was, always will be, and yes it is hard to be bothered enough to put them all in order really, except (and this is becoming my catch phrase) "I'd put the Spice Girls up a few places"
September 30, 20204 yr Author Top 10 over all 1 Adamski - Killer 10 2 Shakespears Sister - Stay 9.3 3 Snap! - Rhythm Is a Dancer 9 4 Erasure - SOS 8.8 5 Elton John - Sacrifice/Healing Hands 8.3 6 Everything but the Girl - Missing (Todd Terry Club Mix) 8.3 7 Erasure - Voulez-Vous 8.2 8 Queen - These Are the Days of Our Lives 8 9 Natalie Imbruglia - Torn 7.9 10 East 17 - Stay Another Day 7.9 Looking back now, I scored Queen and Voulez Vous too highly.
September 30, 20204 yr Author Bottom 10 over all 94 No Matter What - Boyzone 2.8 95 Things Can Only Get Better (D:Reamix) - D:Ream 2.5 96 Saturday Night - Whigfield 2.1 97 I Wanna Sex You Up - Color Me Badd 2 98 Mr Blobby - Mr Blobby 2 99 Teletubbies Say Eh-Oh! - Teletubbies 1.5 100 Mambo Number 5 - Lou Bega 1 101 Chocolate Salty Balls (P.S. October 1, 20204 yr Who would be your first place for 96? Ooh tough one for 96 - I'd be controversial and opt for Earth Song, cos that message is the most important message for the future, bar none. It's so close after that, though, with Gangsta's Paradise, Back For Good, & Wonderwall all topping my charts, and Missing being a big number 2 (in a good way). All 5 are perfect pop records for me
