Yep this has had no discount so far and zero promo as well so it just goes to show how much of a streaming force she is - enough to have a 7k lead officially over #2 in week 5!! Here's to week 6 ahead of the major Christmas invasion :D I agree that this doesn't feel as culturally big as 'thank u, next' or '7 rings' but has connected really well with the general public nevertheless. '34+35' is the one with the memeability factor really, I think 'positions' spawned 'president Ariana' memes for a couple of weeks thanks to the video but that's about it.

The song refuses to age one bit. Insiders were calling it a "grower" before the song came out and I see why. 5 weeks in and it still sounds extremely fresh.

#1 in the First Look Chart today! Get that 6th week Ari :o

The only non-Christmas song in the U.K. Spotify top 10 right now

If Ariana does this I'll be VERY impressed. Little Mix and Mariah Carey are big threats this week. Personally I'd like to see LM have a quick run in the top spot before the years up, but it really is going to be a fight with this MONSTER hit hanging in there. Couldn't be prouder of her.

But she doesn’t deserve etc etc etc

I’m loving a long running number one and it’s a very good song despite being slightly underwhelmed at first!

Mariah is 900 copies behind in the mids - I guess we'll have to wait and see how big her 1st December streams are, how much they drop after that, plus how Ariana's numbers hold up. I finally bought this on iTunes today :kink:

Btw this continues to be stable in the U.S. too:

BTS x2 + 'Mood' ahead of her this week!

Midweek info has gone quiet but Mariah didn't even do double Ariana's numbers on Spotify for the 1st December boost, so hoping she'll still be okay for a 6th week! I did have a hunch all week that she'd do it, mainly due to ACR being such an obstacle, but you can never predict the figures - was shocked at that

Edit: not me posting that and then the mids being released a few minutes after

1 Ariana Grande - positions (24.4k)

2 Mariah Carey - All I Want for Christmas Is You (22.6k)

3 Little Mix - Sweet Melody (21.1k)

4 Wham! - Last Christmas (20.1k)

5 Miley Cyrus - Midnight Sky (19.6k)

I know people had their doubts as to Ariana returning with a new album so soon after ‘thank, u next’ due to what (for seemingly any other artist) would be a risk of over-saturation, but she really has proven that people generally don’t tire of her and her music.

I mean ‘positions’ spending what will almost certainly be a 6th week at the summit (albeit somewhat by default), ‘34+35’ climbing/promising to be a substantial follow-up hit, and ‘Santa Tell Me’ looking to re-peak in its 7th(?) year charting are all just signs that she is fully cementing herself as a future icon.

I imagine at some point we will see her return to her poppier roots as she changes and her career evolves. But for now I’m happy living in the R&B era with her as it’s clearly her best market for the moment, and she’s not about to go anywhere anytime soon. Her stardom reminds of me Rihanna in her peak, in the sense that anything she puts her name to will automatically take off; the key difference between the two of them however I think is that Ari seems to have honed in on a staple sound much quicker.

Come on Positions. :cheer:

I know it's inevitable that AIWFCIY will eventually become a #1 but I really hope it can be delayed as long possible.

I wouldn't call an almost two year gap "so soon" but I agree with the sentiment. The whole concept of over-saturation is very much a myth that's somehow only ascribed to female popstars. Rappers put out multiple projects a year that do well. As long as the audience enjoys the music the demand is there.

On a side note, I'm pleasantly surprised to see 34+35 rising in streams everywhere. The song has apparently gone viral on TikTok and Snapchat, a re-entry to the top 10 seems possible.

Spends a SIXTH week at #1!! :cheer:

Incredible, her joint longest stay at #1 with 'thank u, next' + alongside 'Head & Heart' it's the most consecutive weeks spent at #1 in 2020

What a smash :cheeseblock:

She’s still doing more than Mariah on Spotify (with ACR taken into account), so I wonder if this can manage a 7th week?

I want her to achieve a 7th week so she can snatch that most consecutive weeks of the year stat for herself  keep streaming everyone! :cheer:

Glad that holding off on downloading it until this week was worth it :kink: might get the Now version as well for this next week

woo that continued stability *.* looks like its #1 run is probably going to end this week in the U.K. as Mariah is currently quite far ahead in the mids. If it falls behind Wham! as well then it will match the exact chart run of 'thank u, next' so far. Plus match her position in the States right now of course. Ari was #7 in the First Look Chart yesterday in amongst the major Christmas influx, but has climbed to #6 already today so I imagine her fall from the top won't be dramatic at all.
