We only have to go back just over a year ago to see our previous TV-spin off at #1 (‘Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale’, £4,390,303, #1). There was a time when British comedy series always seemed to get big-screen adventures (see more about this with the film at #3) but I think you have to go back to ‘The Lego Ninjago Movie’ (£3,642,038, #1, 2017) for the last non-Downton TV spin-off at #1 (depending on if you want to accept the Mission: Impossible franchise) and to ‘The Inbetweeners 2’ (£12,538,114, #1, 2014) for a British adaptation. For anyone unaware, ‘Ghosts’ was a British sitcom that ran from 2019-2023 written and starring the comedy-troupe Them There (‘Horrible Histories’, ‘Yonderland’) and has since been successfully adapted for an American version. The third entry in James Gunn’s rebooted DC universe, ‘Clayface’ becomes the second-consecutive film to debut at #2 (£2,011,765, £1.9 million without previews) following ‘Supergirl’ (£2,725,612, #2) in June. Despite the lower opening, this is actually a great result for DC. Seeming that this can be described as “in the vein of Sony’s disastrous SPUMC universe” where they’ve made a film about a Batman villain with no Batman and its an 18-rated horror film, this is a great first weekend with the film already making $46 million worldwide against a $40 million budget. Written by Netflix’s go-to King adapter, Mike Flanagan and directed by James Watkins who has previous with big horror hits (‘The Woman In Black’, ‘Speak No Evil’), this has earned good reviews and looks set to be a Halloween choice for many next week. This is the 6th biggest horror opening of the year and the second-certificate for a 18-rated film. One of the early-trailblazers of the mockumentary format, Sacha Baron Cohen has seen his comedy-creations return big box-office in the past and it turns out, there’s still an audience awaiting his return as ‘Ali G: Who Iz I?’ debuts at #3 (£1,344,873) despite a stunted release by Amazon who kept reducing and reducing its showtimes as the release date got closer. It was meant to be just this weekend but a second weekend has now been announced. It’s still a much lower opening than ‘Ali G Indahouse’ (£3,231,673, #1, 2002) nearly a quarter-of-a-century ago but it has beaten ‘Digger’ to be the second-biggest debut for a 15-certificate comedy of 2026. Cohen’s last film of the sort ‘Borat Subsequent Moviefilm’ was a success, receiving Oscar noms, but skipped cinemas for an Amazon Prime release. Completing a brand-new top #4 is ‘Wildwood’ (£1,022,599, £983k without previews). This is the latest film from Laika studios and has a massive $100 million budget. Despite being a 12A, this has received their widest ever release. It’s not a great start but the reviews for this film have been outstanding so there’s a chance it can find its audience. Laika’s only real box office hit, remains their first release ‘Coraline’ (£2,427,244, #2, 2009) which made £8.7 million on original re-release and even opened better than this film on re-release in 2024 (£1,260,124, #4) where it added another £3 million+. The final new entry this week is ‘Fatherland’ (£311,086, £198k without previews, #9). This is the strongest debut for Polish director Paweł Pawlikowski, beating the Oscar-nominated ‘Cold War’ (£228,780, #15, 2018), a film I did see but ashamedly remember nothing about. Last week’s chart-topper, ‘Street Fighter’ falls to #5 after a 56% drop but does just about stay above £1 million. Five films above £1 million is nothing to be sniffed at during this time of the year. With £4.3 million, it’s already well above where ‘Mortal Kombat II’ ended up closing (£3.4 million). After a disappointing opening, ‘Forgotten Island’ showed positive signs in weekend two (-28%). But with an opening that low, this looks like too little too late. ‘Verity’ loses 42% as it becomes the 21st member of the £10 million club of 2026 while ‘Other Mommy’ drops another 54% as it climbs towards £5 million. Climbing back into the top 10 after a week’s absence is ‘Shaun The Sheep: The Beast Of Mossy Bottom’ with its 16% climb helping it hit £4.7 million and break a record. It is now the highest-grossing Sky Original of all-time, surpassing ‘Lee’ (£4.5 million) from 2024. There are two further new entries in the #11-#15 section: ‘Tad And The Magic Lamp’ (#12) and ‘BTS World Tour ‘ARIRANG’ In Buenos Aires: Live Viewing’ (#13). Next week sees the openings of ‘Wicker’, ‘Primetime’, ‘Animol’, ‘I Love Boosters’, ‘Arnie & Barney’, ‘Everest: The Other Side’, ‘Ozzy & Black Sabbath: Back To The Beginning’, ‘BTS World Tour ‘ARIRANG’ In Sao Paulo: Live Viewing’, ‘Peter Asher: Everywhere Man’, ‘In The Shadows’, ‘Nightborn’, ‘City Of Masks’, and ‘Bad Day At The Office’. This is up on the £834,870 that 1994’s ‘Street Fighter’ opened with at #1 but that’s to be expected over 30 years later. A better comparison is probably the adaption earlier in the year of the video-game franchises’ American competitor, ‘Mortal Kombat II’ (£1,607,520, #5). That film only made £3.4 million which this will comfortably beat. Opening at #2 is the latest animation from Dreamworks, ‘Forgotten Island’ (£1,299,539). Released last month in the US to little fanfare ($35 million in total against an $80 million budget), I thought this was going to be completely forgotten about so I actually think £1.3 million isn’t that bad all things considered. Dreamworks’s last original film was ‘Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken’ (£885,056, #3, 2023) and this is an improvement on that, but it’s still way off their IP-related releases since: ‘Trolls Band Together’ (£3,051,810, #1, 2023), ‘Kung Fu Panda 4’, (£5,020,600, #1, 2024), ‘The Wild Robot’ (£3,256,572, #1, 2024) and last year’s film from the same weekend ‘Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie’ (£1,901,289, #1, 2025). Outside of the COVID era, you have to go back to 2003 to see worse openings for Dreamworks Animation. Completing the brand-new top three is Indian hit ‘Jailer 2’ (£1,169,412, £754k without previews). As you might guess based on the title, this is a sequel to the 2023 film ‘Jailer’ (£727,742, #7) and the opening is quite similar once you remove previews. That film only made £1.3 million in total so this will pass that this week. This is the second Indian film to open to £1 million+ this year. Opening at #6, but would have been #2 if you included its midweek gross, ‘Hadestown: The Musical’ (£623,906, £1.5 million in total) has already been a huge hit in the US. Based on Greek mythology, this was a recording of the Award-winning musical filmed in London with the West End supporting cast but the original main-five actors from the Broadway version. This is already the fourth biggest event-cinema release of the year. The fifth and final new entry this week is ‘Whalefall’ (£510,743, #7). This is a survival-horror about a man who is swallowed by a sperm-whale and tries to escape. Starring in this is Austin Abrams, who started off in the failed MTV US remake of ‘The Inbetweeners’ but also (more successfully) stars in ‘Resident Evil’ which remains in the top 10 after a 39% drop. Last week’s #1, ‘Other Mommy’ falls to five with a middling -53% drop. It has £3.8 million and will hope to stick around for Halloween. ‘Verity’ holds better (-44%) and is getting very close to becoming the second Hoover adaptation to hit £10 million. ‘Heart Of The Beast’ has a harsh-looking 5 place drop, but does it with the best hold in the top 10 (-38%). If it continues like that, £10 million is still possible. ‘Sense And Sensibility’ rounds out the top 10 (-47%) as it reaches £5.9 million and sits just outside of the YTD top 30. There is one further new entry in the #11-#15 section: ‘Naza’ (#13). Next week sees the openings of ‘Clayface’, ‘Wildwood’, ‘Ghosts: The Possession Of Button House’, ‘Ali G: Who Iz I?’, Klara And The Sun’, ‘Tad And The Magic Lamp’, ‘Possible Love’, Fatherland’, ‘Monster Mia’, ‘Kung Fu Soccer’ and ‘418’. We also see a re-release of ‘Scream’. Can any of them top the charts?
