Sounds: Mark Ronson....The Sunday Times...October 14th 2007

This week: Wunderkind Producer Mark Ronson talks about a great 2007, producing Amy Winehouse and being mates with Lily Allen

The talented producer extraordinaire catches up with Pete Paphides after a heavy night on the tequila. He talks about a packed 2007, making a jaunty cover of Radiohead and growing up in Manhatten.

"Kids used to call me Commie, but I loved New York as soon as I got there. We'd take the school bus to track meets and football games, and everyone would sing De La Soul lyrics from Three Feet High and Rising. That was New York, it was hip hop. It was weird, a bunch of precocious, Upper West Side private school boys singing Stetsasonic's Talking All That Jazz."

"People know Amy and Lily won't come to every show, or even any show. I made this record because I wanted to tour it, and I just thought I'll get my friends to sing on it, and it doesn't matter if they're not there, because they're unknowns anyway. And then Amy Winehouse and Lily Allen have the Year of Life, and that whole thing goes out of the window. But it's a really exciting, dynamic show: you won't miss Lily like you'd miss her if you went to a Lily show and she wasn't there."

"The Only One I Know [with Robbie Williams] is just not very good. I really didn't help the situation because Robbie's vocals are mixed really low, it almost makes it a tiny bit underwhelming. I wanted to do a bizarre 1960s thing where you bury the vocals under the track, but it makes it sound like he doesn't care. I take full credit and responsibility for the song being underwhelming."

Plus listen to Valerie with Amy Winehouse, Oh My God with Lily Allen, and I Suck with Rivers Cuomo (from Ronson's first album).

I wish that Mark Ronson has used someone else's bloody voice to experiement with instead of Robbie....If Mark is that bloody inexperienced I hope that Robbie will think twice before using him again on his albums....

I cannot actually believe that Mark made such a statement....

I love the version, but Rob's vocals are far too low, with the music being to high, so he is right to take the blame. But why even say that to begin with?

I agree...makes me wonder about the integrity of this guy & what he is really about....the only thing thjough I will say is that the album was his own creation with his name on it....however I do not like where he says that his mix did not help after saying first that it was not very good to begin with....is he half blaming Robbie....it was Marks album ...he created the sound that he wanted so shy he he insinuating something else now....Well at least he did mention it in The Times so I am sure that someone from IE Music will spot it & hopefully will take the remark into consideration if they decide to use Mark again....the version that Robbie performed recently is way better in my opinion but Mark is the guy that laid the tracks for Versios so he should take the blame 100%...it was the mix that created the problem not Robbies voice....

I agree most definatly. The Live version was great as you could really hear Rob's voice loudly. He has a cheek to even say that though, I mean what is it going to achive? Why did'nt he just fix the song before actually giving it the go ahead for the album if he did'nt like it?
Marks album is amazing, deffinatly one of the bests of the year. Robbie's track is alright, well actually quite good, but there is better on the album. ^_^

Robbie voice is certainly underwhelming on it but it was mark that made the decision on how to lay down the track ...I do not know why he just keeps going on about it.....
