To Rabbitfurcoat, Royston and Richie....

CORRECT!!!

NUMBER ONE - JOY DIVISION - LOVE WILL TEAR US APART

It had to be really... And I dont give a toss if anyone thinks this is obvious or cliched or whatever... There is a damn good reason why this band and this song are revered so much, and frankly if I have to sit here and explain it then you're not really a true fan of Indie or Alternative music... This is basically where it all begins - Joy Division, Tony Wilson, Martin Hannett, Factory Records - the era where Punk/Post Punk gives way to Indie proper and Joy Division represent that transition more aptly than any other band you could possibly think of. I wont soft-soap people, JD were a grim, desolate-sounding, depressing band who wrote music which was the very sound of despair and urban horror... But, Christ, it also sounded beautiful, if you knew where to look... JD's sound and Martin Hannett's production on JD's two magnificent albums is something that is utterly unique (as unique as that drum sound Led Zep's John Bonham created) and has really never been matched by any other band or any other producer, "Closer" and "Unknown Pleasures" sound like things not of this world and I doubt we'll ever hear their like again... To say that Joy Division are influential is a vast understatement... It's a bit like saying "Blimey, the Grand Canyon's a bit big innit...?". To write a list of the bands who owe Ian Curtis and Joy Division would take me days to compile, seriously... If you're an Indie fan, you're an Indie fan ultimately because of these four blokes from Manchester, simple as....

I wont bore you by going on about the tragedy of Ian Curtis's life and his absolutely pointless, sad suicide. At the end of the day, it's about the musical legacy he left us, and that is something that is just incalculable... If you've never heard these albums, then why not...?

SUPPLEMENTAL - A live performance of "Shadowplay" from "Granada Reports" in 1978... Look out for a young Tony Wilson....

Love Will Tear Us Apart

Shadowplay live

Great top 5... but I'd have chosen Last Night I Dreamt Somebody Loved Me over There is a Light for The Smiths....and probably something off Technique or Brotherhood over Blue Monday for New Order.

And, of course, a cracking number one. Even if I prefer Paul Young's version off 'No Parlez' ( ;) :P )

Never a truer word. Great 50. Children should be forced to bookmark this thread and dip into it on a daily basis until c**p pop is washed from their minds forever.

A compilation album of theirs came out recently, highly recommended. It's missing a few things (like "Villier's Terrace"), but for the beginner it covers pretty much all the bases, their original 80s incarnation and stuff from their more recent few albums as well...

Plenty of their vids on You Tube as well... Some great live performances....

That's for you too Royston....

Their 1997 compilation was a better one, that one had "Villier's Terrace" on.

Just wanted to give a big thumbs-up for this thread, yes i know it's old but it deserves to be on

the 1st page again for new people to see it.

I loved the Daisy Chainsaw track, i remember hearing that for the first time when it

was playing on Radio 1 (Steve Wright In The Afternoon). I was in the office at work

at the time. Awesome tune.

I'll play the full version of Leave Them All Behind (no. 44) on my show tonight.

Eclectic Plectrum Parade, listen at www.crmk.co.uk Wednesdays at 9-11pm (GMT)

Cheers.

Very good list. Could n't argue with the bands being chosen but I would probably have chosen different tracks for some of them.

I mean Only Happy When It Rains over Upside Down for the Mary Chain! But then that's what personal taste is all about.
