Posted December 27, 20204 yr Does anybody have any weekly sales for albums or singles top 5, 10 or 20 for the 50s and 60s? Would be interested to see what a number one or two would sell, also what they had to move to even break into the top tiers.
December 27, 20204 yr This information is not available. Apart from The Beatles sales would be rather low.
December 27, 20204 yr I know RIAA used to award certifications based on revenue earnt rather than actual sales, not sure how it looked for the UK. Pre-1994 the actual tracking of sales seems to have been a mess.
December 27, 20204 yr I know Dasher had a thread which shows number one singles sales from 1980 onwards!
December 27, 20204 yr BPI started the certification in the 70s, but I think we have only total sales and certs, not weekly sales.
December 27, 20204 yr Author Thanks for the replies so far, it's a bit awkward with sales certifications as they only came into play in the 80s, If I remember correctly, and record companies have to pay to get audited which means why would a record label in 1990 get a single from 1953 validated? Just wondered as I'm quite interested in actual sales and the 60s seemed wild.
December 28, 20204 yr You could maybe track streams of the songs now but there won’t be a huge amount from songs this old with ‘White Christmas’ and ‘Rock Around The Clock’ being some of the few songs doing well!
