For future reference. Following Bonnie Tyler’s sad death last week, her 1983 No.1 smash Total Eclipse Of The Heart is a re-entry at No.29 (12,074 sales). The bombastic Jim Steinman song, which last charted in 2008, has digital era consumption of 1,482,665 units, and was certified gold for sales of more than 500,000 units within three months of its original release, meaning its overall consumption is in excess of two million units.

Use https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m002yxrf as previously given, and play the programme. Fast forward and you will get the top 20 albums. The OCC will publish the list on Sunday.

So where does that Top 20 list come from? EDIT: found it!

Tony Blackburn got this wrong, as did the BBC web site. Only the all-time chart has sales and streams.

Are these lists streams only? On the BBC web site it says, "2026 marks the 70th anniversary of the UK Albums Chart. To celebrate, Tony counts down the Top 20 albums from the 1960s. This chart, supplied by the Official Charts Company, is based on total sales and streaming across all time." Tony Blackburn has just repeated this statement on Radio 2.

"Ahead of her are Taylor Swift and The Rolling Stones with 14, The Beatles on 15 and Robbie Williams on 16." Alan Jones from Music Week says 12 number ones. Depends whether you include Exile on Main Street and Goat's Head Soup which both returned to no.1. But then why does the OCC web site summary not include The Beatles Sgt Pepper and Abbey Road which also returned to no.1?

Adele 21 went 19 times platinum on 6/2/26. Oasis WHAT'S THE STORY MORNING GLORY went 19 times platinum on 15/5/26. Oasis have sold around 20,000 since 15th May, and Adele a few thousand since 6th February. So Oasis likely to have overtaken Adele.

This is as exciting as the Brit Billion streams award. What ever happened to that? Wonder how far back they will go? Maybe just to the year 2000?

Now, over 1,400 Number 1 albums later, the Official Charts Company and BBC Radio are joining forces to celebrate the album in all its glory. While listening habits may have transformed beyond recognition since 1956, seven decades on, the album remains music’s most beloved, enduring format – and that’s more than deserving of a party. Throughout July Official Charts will be teaming up with BBC Radio 2 and BBC Radio 1 Anthems to exclusively unveil the official most-streamed albums of each decade for the first time ever, compiled for the BBC by the Official Charts Company. 20 biggest sellers of all time! Will this be just pure sales or will it include sales equivalent streams? Will sales go back to 1994 or will it include earlier record company shipment figures? Will the OCC ask Alan Jones to compile the list? Will it be studio albums only or will it include greatest hits albums? Will all album versions be totalled - remastered, remixed, reissued, live albums? Will sales be rounded to nearest 1,000 or 10,000 or exact figures similar to the singles sales table in 2017? Will there be separate lists for pure sales, streams, combined figures? Hopefully the OCC will publish a complete top 100 listing.

Albums are also automatic with sales going back to 1994. BPI don't have pre 1994 sales. Previous certs were based on Record Company shipments.

4 new certs for Harry Styles and 3 for Michael Jackson this week. All singles.

Sales for a number of pre 1994 albums have been reported e.g. Sgt Pepper, Abbey Road, Rumours. Thriller was 15 times Platinum on 26/11/21 and Thriller 25 was Platinum on 14/08/2009. Bad was 14 times Platinum on 26/11/21. Abbey Road and Dark side of the moon were also upgraded on 26/11/21. Thriller must be very close to 16P by now.

And the OCC has not yet reported the Michael Jackson albums Bad and Thriller to BPI for upgrades. (15P, 16P) Maybe their 1994 and 1995 sales were adjusted downwards?
