Andy Murray was not surprised Novak Djokovic won a ninth Australian Open, as the "younger guys have not shown they are particularly close".

 

Djokovic, 33, beat Russian Daniil Medvedev, 25, in straight sets in Melbourne to win his 18th Grand Slam.

 

British former world number one Murray said he watched virtually nothing of a tournament he was forced to miss after testing positive for Covid-19.

 

"I watched very little, I wanted to be there and it was a struggle," he said.

 

"I stopped following all the tennis players I follow on social media because I just really didn't want to see it."

 

The 33-year-old expected Medvedev to push Djokovic closer in the final, but knows only too well how hard it is to beat the world number one in a Grand Slam final.

He's right, Djokovic & Nadal ain't going anywhere. The only way Djokovic won't win is down to 2 scenarios: a) playing Nadal at FO or b) smacking balls at lines people and let me tell you, the latter won't be happening again!

it's a pity Medvedev didn't deliver in the final cos he had been played at a great level during the 2 weeks and I had him as favourite

but he played very bad, and his mindset was off, was a bit like the Medvedev of a few years back

but also have to say that Djokovik played very well

 

I kinda feel like Nadal's best days are over, a while ago he would have lost in a 5-set match after winning the first 2.

I think Medvedev, Thiem and Tsisipas are above Nadal now and only Djokovik stands a chance against them.

 

Osaka was the best in women during the 2 weeks. There were better games earlier in the competition, especially Osaka vs Muguruza,

which was sorta like the real final of the tournament. As usual very disappointing performance by Ashley Barty, Halep, Pliskova, Kenin etc

Nadal is still invincible on clay. Reckon' he's got 2 maybe 3 more French Opens at least. Think only Thiem or Djok in absolute beast mode can even have a sniff.

 

But yeah Nadal's finished on hard & grass courts which leaves Djokovic unrivalled to hoover up the rest. As much as everyone wants Federer to come back and win a few more Slams I just can't see it. That Wimbledon 2019 final was his last chance hurrah.

Novak Djokovic says it has taken "a lot of blood, sweat and tears" to break Roger Federer's record of 310 weeks ranked as world number one.

 

The 33-year-old Serb set the record on Monday for most weeks at number one in the 48-year history of the ATP rankings.

 

"My family have supported me for day one," he told BBC World Service.

The French Open has been postponed by a week in the hope that more spectators will be permitted to attend.

 

The Grand Slam tournament at Roland Garros will now run from 30 May to 13 June with qualifying the week before.

 

France is in a third nationwide lockdown amid a surge in coronavirus cases, which president Emmanuel Macron previously said he expected to end in mid-May.

 

The French Tennis Federation (FFT) said postponing was the "best solution".

Toni Nadal, the uncle and former coach of 20-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal, has joined the coaching team of Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime.

 

Nadal, widely known as 'Uncle Toni', coached his nephew from childhood and through his adult career until he stood down in 2017.

 

He will now join the team of highly-rated Auger-Aliassime, 20, starting at next week's Monte Carlo Masters.
