An incredulous state of affairs as a song that peaked weeks before it even got to #1 is still holding on through inertia several months later as "Mood" has now been #1 for 10 interrupted weeks. Next week will prove a test as "WITHOUT YOU" is fighting off the diminishing side effects of December-based boosting which would make you think that it'll just get statistically close enough one of these days, possibly this week. Because Christmas Day was counted on this week's chart, we have a diminished showing but not everything clearing out in one week, which if nothing else is going to prove irritating for me in 11 months time. One interesting tidbit of it is that Paul Kelly actually climbs into the top 50 this week, which would be uncharacteristic, except that the more ragged hot summer sound of the song (imo) always has it dropping off a little slower than similarly ranked Christmas songs, and for once it's demonstrated on the chart itself. The differing audience and less obvious sonic Christmas connection might also be why Sia only suffered a minor drop, though she will be gone from the chart next week. Anyway, since it's clear ARIA didn't count Thursday data properly last week, it's probably true of this week which means that some songs such as "Blinding Lights" and "Dance Monkey" should be EVEN HIGHER than they are this week. Something new that does climb is "Afterglow" though not quite with a record-breaking climb as it's *only* up 40 places to #7 this week. It's still climbing on Spotify so there's still potential from this. On the other hand, Glass Animals' ancient "Heat Waves" also climbs into the top 40 this week, becoming their highest ever charter, and likely to ride Hottest 100 hype and momentum for a few weeks yet.

Taylor Swift holds the #1 spot for a 3rd week. "folklore" managed 4 weeks at the top and "evermore" looks well poised to do so as well. As tends to be the case, this week's chart is just a resetting of equilibrium, where the strength of rebounds is proportional to how streaming reliant the albums are. We do get a new entry at #15 from Playboi Carti though, his highest ever chart position by a significant margin. Another interesting thing is that "Legend" is in the top 50 for the first time in almost exactly 20 years. I've always been suspicious that the streams for the album are not being counted correctly though this could also be a short sales boost again unless ARIA really have fixed it. I don't have strong expectations for anything to shake things up next week so inertia is probably the word.

Does the Australian audience not have a curious reaction to a song whose main hook is 'heat waves in the middle of June'

I suppose it's in a similar boat to "Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!" (though honestly as a West Australian, we can still get surprisingly warm winters).

It occurred to me a day later that "Heat Waves" doesn't actually do the lyric in this way

I'm freed of my annual hassle of excess work in chart stat compiling due to the shifting sands of Christmas. So we're back to the boring status quo except wait, we're likely to get a #1 debut next week courtesy of Olivia Rodrigo. Such is her enormous ascent, she's looking very likely to bypass the usual Australia 1 day lag and ARIA's own Thursday issues meaning that she's probably effectively taking the top spot on 5 days of sales & streams. Thus ending the almost unexplainable 11 week reign of "Mood" though The Kid LAROI was probably about to take it anyway so he may well be getting "Moves Like Jagger"ed, a reference that works for both Australian & UK chart followers. As is tradition, a new Justin Bieber song enters the top 5 as another for the pile. Pulling through for a prediction I made a month ago on plug, Tones and I scores her 3rd top 10 hit with "Fly Away", which might have a chance at outpeaking "Never Seen The Rain" at least but the high influx on the top 10 lately will probably keep it on the lower rungs. Speaking of that top 10 influx, SZA is possibly going to be making a charge for it soon with "Good Days". I mistakenly thought it was a curious surprise to see a SZA song doing so well though I'd forgotten she's had about 10 top 50 hits at this point. Mind you this is the only one without a high profile name attached to it so the notability still comes through. MEDUZA's new song is being mistakenly credited to Tiesto giving him his 4th top 50 hit, and now an absurd state of affairs means Jason Derulo has 3 songs in the top 50 at once. Though this might seem like a cheap knock off of his previous hit, I'm pretty sure it didn't come out of a millionaire trying to steal a teenager's music without credit or permission, so it's instantly a better song.

"evermore" was poised for 4 weeks at #1 and that's what it accomplishes. It may well go for 5 weeks depending on how Passenger and/or Morgan Wallen feel about that. Otherwise this is an especially peak week of low sales so chart gains are likely proportional to how much their stock was based on residual streaming. And here I was hoping that a year without a major hit would have people slowly forgetting that Maroon 5 exists.

Also ARIA have promised to post their End Of Year content on Friday, so I'll try to do the same.

Oops, it has clearly been a while since I last actually listened to 'Heat Waves' and I confused the lines in the chorus :kink: (still, the words 'middle of June' in a song called 'Heat Waves' is a little northern hemisphere centric regardless :magic:)

This Jason Derulo song is still following the exact same formula as 'Savage Love (Laxed - Siren Beat)', the only difference is he didn't try to release it without crediting the Oceanian producer who made the original song this time. It's almost impressive how blatantly he just did the exact same thing a second time. But sad that he has been rewarded so much for it, it's an even worse song this time and all.

Oh I know all the history behind it, it's just me embellishing my words a little to say that intellectual property theft from the rich angers me more than even the most egregious Jason Derulo wailing, even if the matter was eventually settled. Just the fact that he tried to get away with that.

After months and months of low activity, we finally have a #1 hit that feels like it isn't there by default. Well maybe you could say that from the perspective of it being a monster worldwide hit where Australia is just another box to check, but Olivia Rodrigo has obliterated the competition. Late in the week she was running on over triple the streams of the nearest competitor, reaching absolutely unprecedented numbers only reserved for Christmas songs (and only just the top few of them). So yeah, "drivers license" is probably going to be #1 for a while. Olivia had never charted here before although "All I Want" spent a few months in the Spotify top 200 last year. What this adds up to is The Kid LAROI being painfully unlucky to finally overtake "Mood" at the worst possible moment, which would have seen him as the first Australian artist to hit #1 since Tones and I, and the first Indigenous artist to hit #1 since Jessica Mauboy 12 years ago. Speaking of Tones and I, "Fly Away" has now matched the peak of "Never Seen The Rain" purely to troll my comments from last week. SZA also soars into the top 10 faster than I expected, giving her a 3rd top 10 hit after "All The Stars" and "Sexual" by NEIKED. Speaking of severely pre-empting me, I probably made a prediction 5 months ago that Glass Animals would eventually get a top 40 hit out of "Heat Waves" after a strong Hottest 100 performance (I've been avoiding spoilers so please none of that in this thread, cheers), now it looks like almost hit the top 10 on the day of the countdown, with a potential beeline to the top 5 the week after. Certainly doing so next week will be Ariana Grande because Cynical Remix #583. Like with "Cola" and "Turn Me On" in years prior, January is clearly old UK hit catch up month as now "Looking For Me" cracks the top 50 ("i miss u" is also bubbling under I believe). While the OCC likes to chop off the least relevant names at times, ARIA has determined that Diplo is not credited on this one. The Weeknd also 'debuts' in the top 50 with "Save Your Tears", though certainly he should have 9 months ago except the powers that be decided that he could only have 1 debut that week. It looks very likely that it will have an accurate peak next week though. You can't make me care about post-year post-album singles. Also join me next week in finding out how ARIA decide to handle the "goosebumps" situation.

Evidently I underestimated Barry Gibb but he gets his first ever solo #1 album, ahead of close competition from noted covidiot Morgan Wallen. Passenger scores his 6th top 10 album. A big vinyl sales burst sends Arctic Monkeys back into the top 50 coincidentally as two tracks from the album happen to be riding around in the Spotify top 200 at the moment (neither have been a staple there since 2015). Back in the day when an artist was doing particularly well with their new material, you'd sometimes see their back catalogue hang around the chart. Kings Of Leon had all 4 of their albums in the top 50 at the height of their powers in 2008. Those days are long gone so I don't want to just use the success of "Good Days" as an excuse for SZA actually managing a new peak for "Ctrl", which originally debuted at #40, but taste wins sometimes. Next week we could have Illy challenging for the top spot as a relative veteran next to Why Don't We & ZAYN.

4 more weeks and Lewis will score 100th week inside top 50

I should clarify that this is top 100 weeks, he's 'only' up to 93 in the top 50, which is still 9 more than the next highest.

what's the record in top 100 then?

what's the record in top 100 then?

Yeah it is. Shape of You & Perfect got 80 weeks each, only since surpassed by the obvious two.

Dunno the exact top 100 record but Perfect is probably still charting and closing in on 4 years. Riptide, Shape of You and Thinking Out Loud are the other big ones

SZA wasn’t the vocalist on Sexual? Wasn’t it Dyo/Ms D

:kink:

Oh but you should definitely care about 'Save Your Tears' (even though it blatantly should have been pushed in place of 'In Your Eyes'). x

Cool to see 'Looking For Me' finally charting somewhere else outside the UK/Ireland!

Oh I know it's good but I just don't buy into extended album campaigns, especially in a streaming era. Mass flocking to listen to a song that's already been available for nearly a year (on a very popular album no less) feels so forced. Easier to just cherry pick my own favourites from the get-go.
I'm normally the same tbf but the excitement of one of the best songs of 2020 finally getting a music video and becoming a hit has actually successfully revitalised my interest in the song :magic:

It's week 2 of the seemingly destined to be endless reign for Olivia Rodrigo except WAIT, she has a mild touch of competition from Glass Animals. There's a historic precedent of triple j's Hottest 100 impacting the ARIA Chart that goes back to the 2006 advent of digital sales tracking. Whatever wins and everything in-between tends to get a big boost, in fact the other night 93/100 of the countdown were in the Apple Music top 500 chart. This is always especially potent for songs that had just entered the charts and are climbing at the time, though those songs never have actually won before. I'm choosing that reason to explain an unprecedented amount of interest in "Heat Waves" of all Glass Animals songs which just yesterday hit the 3rd highest non-Christmas daily Spotify peak, behind "drivers license" and "In My Feelings". I do not think they can get to #1, but with Olivia freefalling like a collapsing stone that just released a flop album, perhaps momentum will be on their side in a future week. Elsewhere of note, a local WA band I saw (read: was playing cards rather than actually pay attention to them) years ago, Spacey Jane, could be seeing a top 10 peak for their runner up song "Booster Seat". Flume could get a new peak with "The Difference" which finished 3rd, and most importantly, Victorian premier Dan Andrews could be getting his first top 50 hit, but more on that next week. Ariana Grande released a remix apparently, as did HVME which has actually caused a re-crediting giving Travis Scott his 2nd top 50 hit called "Goosebumps". Doja Cat scores two new top 50 hits at once, one of which wasn't produced by a rapist.

Illy scores his 2nd #1 album this week. It would seem apt that this big debut and the 4 year gap since his last album coincides with him signing with Sony. If a throwaway lyric he wrote 9 years ago holds up, he's got 2 more albums left in him. It is at least pretty noteworthy that he does it with an album with only 1 top 40 hit which was from 18 months ago. In doing so, he fends off the new Why Don't We album featuring the smash hits "1979" and "Black Skinhead". Their previous album debuted at #10 so this is a step up for them. Eminem rides a physical release for his B-Side compilation back to the top 5. ZAYN's last album didn't even make the top 50 (probably because of when it was released), so he's back on track at #10 this week. Ashnikko narrowly missed scoring a top 50 single last year but manages to slip through on the album chart, while Sleaford Mods also score their first ever top 50 peak. Next week might be The Kid LAROI's chance to finally hit #1 as the biggest competition seems to be from an animated film I've never heard of called Bluey, and the new Bicep album. Perhaps Bring Me The Horizon's well timed physical release could put them up in contention.

It's a 3rd week for Olivia Rodrigo, who despite a massive collapse in streams and a not especially large margin, is safely holding #1 just because her opposition is presently falling faster. Even though "Your Love (Deja Vu)" is right there, the overwhelming sentiment is rallying behind "Heat Waves" which vaults up to #2, swapping from one undesirable peak to another. Spacey Jane have less to regret as they're just comfortably nestled in the top 10 this week, likely to drop right back out, while Glass Animals look set for another week at #2. I was also once again very wrong, as Tones and I gets a new peak for "Fly Away", outpeaking "Never Seen The Rain". Another notable result of the Hottest 100 is Flume moving back to #23 with "The Difference", which originally just snuck a quick top 50 peak. This is the first time it's ever been ahead of Spotify's pet favourite "Rushing Back". The more peculiar arrival is at #39. Mashd N Kutcher have previously charted twice with questionable re-workings of equally popular songs "Steal My Sunshine" and "Parlez vous-Francais?". I'm not qualified to talk about this as a West Australian who until this week rarely had to think much about Covid-19, but Victoria's 2020 was a lot more drastic. Vic premier Dan Andrews ended up doing daily press conferences for months on end updating the situation. From this, Mashd N Kutcher have chopped up audio from it to make "Get On The Beers", a song largely instructing everyone to get drunk. This is not an entirely new concept, as in the late '90s, Australian comedian Pauline Pantsdown did a similar thing with the raving lunacy of oft elected xenophobe Pauline Hanson, making the Hottest 100 and ARIA top 10s with two different songs of similar effect, the first of which is now banned from being played on the airwaves and is definitely not available to hear anywhere online.

I'm even less qualified to talk about Bluey, but this TV cartoon soundtrack hits #1. The Kid LAROI is held off but gets a new peak this week and might be able to get to the top next week. Every Bring Me The Horizon album from 2010 onwards has hit #1 but they have to settle for #3 with their EP as the physicals bring it back into the chart. Bicep prove themselves more popular in Australia than I thought at #12.

great for Glass Animals, and Bicep did pretty well too

Yay for a new peak for Flume/Toro Y Moi!

Cannot decide if Mashd N Kutcher is a great name or an awful one.
