June 2, 20214 yr bit strange that Favourite Crime is missing, seems like an error good to see new Vance Joy top 50
June 2, 20214 yr 'favorite crime' being missing at the moment seems like it might be confirmation of your theory that Australian charts give away future singles / songs being astroturfed to TikTok - we have already seen that song starting to break away from other album tracks in the UK and apparently gain more TikTok traction so... coming to be the official 4th single? Also ha at the Dr. Colossus album title.
June 4, 20214 yr 'favorite crime' being missing at the moment seems like it might be confirmation of your theory that Australian charts give away future singles / songs being astroturfed to TikTok - we have already seen that song starting to break away from other album tracks in the UK and apparently gain more TikTok traction so... coming to be the official 4th single? But I thought Traitor was very likely coming as the next official single since it's the most streamed non-single album tracks atm. In tandem though, "deja vu" lands in a similar situation in terms of missing out on a higher peak as it gets overtaken the same week it overtakes the song ahead of it. Atypical of big album releases, Olivia's album tracks have lasted pretty steadily in their second week, with "traitor" even climbing to a new peak. I'd say the same of "favorite crime" except it still doesn't exist (though it looks like it'll chart next week). It'd probably be knocking on the door of the top 10 but not quite getting there. Otherwise the gains are slow and the entry action is particularly dire, as the anniversary re-issue of his album brings back Juice WRLD's worst song, and absurdly colossal sales brings an even worse version of the Daryl Braithwaite song from last year courtesy of Tom Grennan, a rare case of a song hitting the top 50 without getting to the Spotify top 200 (though ironically being on Today's Top Hits is what made the difference). Olivia also holds the top spot on the album chart without any competition. The top debut comes from inaugural Australian Idol runner up Shannon Noll with his highest chart position since 2007. It is unclear to me whether his fanbase is rooted in ironic nationalism or not. Speaking of mid-2000s Australian culture, we also have The Veronicas in the top 10 with the first of their two albums this year, "GODZILLA". Their first 3 albums all peaked at #2 so this is a step down though I understand it wasn't out on all formats this week (COVID and all that). Same goes for genre connoisseur Allday, who's had 3 top 10 albums in the past but lands at #13 this week. Juice WRLD easily gets a new peak for "Goodbye & Good Riddance", under the caveat that ARIA were mucking up its streaming data for years so it only got to #39 before now. Not long after Alex Henry Foster made his chart debut, his bandmate Sef Lemelin also gets in this week. Two time #1 album artist Moby has his highest chart position in over a decade this week, while founding member of the iconic punk rock band The Saints, Ed Kuepper, has his first chart position in a quarter of a century, with a compilation of his solo material. Next week Olivia might just hold on again, but with competition from Crowded House & Rise Against, while Wolf Alice & Lils Baby & Durk should be in the mix.
June 16, 20214 yr Author Now that is a me level hot take. It's just kinda awful in every way? The lyrics, the choice of flow and overused sample. I hated it the first time I heard it and it becoming (at the time) the rap song that people who hate rap like didn't help to ingratiate it. 14/06/2021 Singles 01 01 04 01 GOOD 4 U Olivia Rodrigo 02 02 09 02 KISS ME MORE Doja Cat feat. In a familiar story, it's posting significant declines every day on Spotify but it has such a huge lead that it doesn't mean much, so we could see another member of the 6 week club. Olivia also has the highest debut of the week with "favorite crime" which seems to have finally gotten enough sales & streams to make the cut  Billie Eilish also debuts in the top 20 and perhaps the biggest sign that this is of low significance is that it hasn't dragged "Your Power" back up with it". In classic Australian fashion, the big success of a few Australian hits at the start of the year in "Fly Away", "WITHOUT YOU" and "Astronaut In The Ocean" means that the powers that be are able to kick back and not really help push much Australian music into the limelight, getting us close to having only 2 in the top 50. Mind you they've now put full force behind Vance Joy who's on the up and up, and bizarrely for me, Dean Lewis finally breaks the top 50 this week with "Falling Up" which has been hovering around for ages and I'm not even sure how he got across this week. There's also a surprising (to me) debut for Marshmello who also hasn't cracked the top 50 on Spotify, but when ARIA are ignoring so many songs I guess you don't need to. On that note, WILLOW's "t r a n s p a r e n t s o u l" should be making the top 50 next week but ARIA aren't counting it yet. It's also possible that Maneskin could make the top 50 in a couple of weeks if ARIA want them to. Olivia Rodrigo holds a 3rd week in a row at #1 on the album chart, making it the longest runner since Taylor Swift's "evermore". In due process she holds off Australian music royalty Crowded House, who now have 5 #1 albums & 3 #2 albums to their name. Rise Against have always proven to be particularly popular in Australia as they notch up their 5th top 10 album. Notably they missed out on a #1 album in 2011 to a Glee soundtrack album. In extremely cool news, The Avalanches released a 20th anniversary vinyl of "Since I Left You" which quite frankly is one of the best albums of the 2000s and had never made the top 10 until this week, meaning now all 3 Avalanches albums have made the top 10, and I still can't believe I wrote the words 'all 3 Avalanches albums'. Taylor Swift also benefits from the belated vinyl release of "evermore" to return to the top 10, just ahead of Wolf Alice for whom these are glamourous new heights. Surprisingly 2017's "Visions Of A Life" never even made the top 50, which is not at all my fault because I bought it the week it came out. As an additional fun aside, they're at #9 which is being held by Masked Wolf on the singles chart. Now remember to vote for "The Last Man On Earth" for the Hottest 100 this year. Lil Baby matches the #20 peak of "My Turn" from last year, bringing my human son in tow for his first ever album chart appearance. Next week it's the return of all your favourites and Maroon 5 as Garbage, Polo G, Migos, King Gizz & MARINA perhaps make an impact.

There's still no strong competition so she's hanging around for a while yet. There's a new peak in the top 5 because of some remix or whatever. Evidently we're lacking new blood at the top of the chart so the oldest guard is climbing back up. What we do get this week is a new entry from Lorde which is her equal 3rd highest charter, and 6th top 20 hit, but it's hard to imagine it'll be sticking around up here. Same goes for the other debuts this week from Doja Cat & Polo G. Maroon 5 also return which is moderately interesting just because it's the first week that "Beautiful Mistakes" has spent between #41 & #50, despite a reasonably lengthy top 40 run. On the album chart, Olivia Rodrigo is #1 for a 4th week in a row as well. I think the last time this happened on both charts at the same time was when Ed Sheeran spent 5 weeks in a row as such. Right behind her is the latest tragedy of timing for King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, who for once have got a simultaneous digital & physical release. I imagine on many cases they could have hit #1 too but with this unlucky timing, they score their 4th #2 album with no #1, more than any other artist that doesn't rhyme with Madiohead. Just behind them is Polo G who scores his 2nd top 10 album at a new #3 high. Two veteran American bands release their 7th albums simultaneously, for Garbage, this maintains their standard wherein every studio album has hit the top 10, for the first time, Maroon 5 do not manage this and land at #11. I assume they won't totally plummet because they'll have decent streaming but no doubt their arbitrary Greatest Hits will be ahead of it by next week. Blocking them from the top 10 is Perth band Sly Withers with their 2nd album. Just behind is Migos who score their equal highest chart peak, though this comes with the casual missing information that "Culture II" was missing streaming data on week 1, so it would've made the top 10 no doubt. Lower down is Australian country singer Andrew Swift, while MARINA gets her 4th top 50 album. As an additional side note, despite charting in the top 7 in the US, UK & New Zealand, Bo Burnham is completely missing from the chart, I guess he's just not as popular in Australia as all those other very similar markets despite a strong showing on Apple & Spotify chart platforms. That's odd.

You might not be surprised to know that Warner is gunning for that #1 debut for Ed Sheeran, which has not been off to quite the same streaming power as "I Don't Care", though in fairness that only got to #1 on sales which looks to be the same case as "Bad Habits" but it's still looking pretty close, as Olivia already has a roughly half-million stream lead just on Spotify. Traditionally though, non-midnight releases like this tend to peak no earlier than Monday, but this was also recently bumped up on Hot Hits Australia so who knows, maybe the momentum will continue all week, and then some? Anyway the top of the chart isn't worth talking about this week so thanks Ed for the pivot material. Joel and company finally overtake enough of Olivia's album tracks to make the top 20 this week, and just behind them is a debut for Maneskin's "Beggin'". This is of course interesting for two reasons, firstly that Madcon's cover was never a hit in any capacity in Australia, and secondly, it should be joined by "I WANNA BE YOUR SLAVE" at around the same spot, though for no good reason, that'll be debuting next week. Based on midweeks, not debuting next week is "Ain't Shit" or "You Right" (though apparently "I Don't Do Drugs" will, shucks?). KSI has a habit of debuting in the top 100 for a single week and then vanishing from the chart, but this week he has his first top 50 hit with "Holiday", which may have been able to survive a second week in the top 50 if not for the chicanery that hit Spotify on Friday. Sadly I imagine Tyler, The Creator will probably only get two top 50 entries for his trouble. Thanks to the chart being Actually Inaccurate, Gang Of Youths get their highest ever singles chart entry. Eagle-temporal lobed readers of this column will recall that they got to #49 with "Let Me Down Easy" in response to it landing at #2 in the Hottest 100 that year, spawning a weirdly racist subset of a fanbase for a fairly ethnically diverse band. Also just behind is Roddy Ricch managing to sneak in with "Late At Night" after some near misses. He'll probably be booted back out as it doesn't look like the song is really popping off after initial promise. Olivia manages that 5th straight week at #1 on the album chart. Uncharacteristically, this looks like the safer of the two reigns as her streams remain too strong and there's no sales juggernaut coming to take it on. What we do get is the return of Nick Cave & Warren Ellis thanks to the vinyl release of "Carnage" all the way up at #2. Fear Factory also get a characteristic mid-table finish for their latest album at #15 but this relatively bare week has the majority of the streaming titans vaulting back up the chart, including Maroon 5 overtaking their new album. A random BTS compilation arrives which I thought was getting its physical release this coming chart week but I've learnt over the past year that I can't trust release dates. The latest signal of streaming taking over everything is that this week sees the arrival of Pitbull's Greatest Hits which has spent all of the COVID era just casually creeping higher and higher. Next week Tyler, The Creator might be able to gun for a #2 debut ahead of Doja Cat, Hiatus Kaiyote & The Veronicas.

This strikes me as a total fluke since it had a monstrously large deficit on streaming but hey, screwing over early adopters with a mid-week discount has short term benefits and doesn't at all sow long term dissent. Anyway we're stuck with this for a while because apparently I don't pay Spotify enough for it to not give me a banner to tell me to listen to Ed Sheeran and so nobody else does either. But also its digital sales are holding up bizarrely well in week 2. Anyway, if there's to be another challenger that's already on the chart, it's probably Måneskin whose "Beggin'" is vaulting up the chart and looks poised to move to #3 this week. The success of this cover has drawn people to the rest of their catalogue as it brings in the new entry "I WANNA BE YOUR SLAVE" that definitely just hasn't been omitted from the chart for no reason for weeks. It looks like it'll be approaching the top 10 soon as well. For reasons unknown, only two songs from Doja Cat's album were let on the chart and the more notable of these is the one that was produced by that guy we all hate. Tyler, The Creator however does get free reign with his chart entries and with this he gifts NBA YoungBoy his first ever top 40 hit, having made the top 50 twice before, while Ty Dolla $ign has now had 9 top 50 hits but never as a lead artist. For a couple weeks now Tones and I has had nothing in the top 50 for the first time since "Johnny Run Away" made the top 50 but "Cloudy Day" climbs in this week and I suspect it could climb a bit if it's able to reach the Spotify top 50 or if Hot Hits Australia gave it more priority than "The Thrill". Olivia holds #1 on the album chart for a 6th week in a row. Tyler, The Creator comes closest to stopping her and picks up a new career peak of #2, after "IGOR" debuted at #3. Doja Cat is also in the top 10 for the first time but that's probably less surprising. Hiatus Kaiyote have spent years building a fanbase and not releasing new music, and so they also vault to dramatic new highs with their latest album at #4. The Veronicas get their 2nd top 10 album of 2021, "Human" actually debuting higher than "GODZILLA" despite tougher competition. The Murlocs get their first top 10 album after two top 20 albums. There's so much new stuff in the top 10 that Ed Sheeran's Divide actually drops down the chart despite his general catalogue climbing, though it'll probably get back in the top 10 next week, which it's not been seen in since 2019. Next week, Olivia faces her strongest challenge potentially as Jimmy Barnes descends from his cloud to give us a new album, and potentially extend his lead as the artist with the most #1's.
July 8, 20213 yr Is the UK the only major music market where Doja Cat's album actually charted higher than Tyler's (albeit only by <100 units)? :drama: Even in Ireland Tyler won that battle. I assume Doja will have more longevity everywhere but still ~ Happy to see the powers that be for the Australian charts letting 'I WANNA BE YOUR SLAVE' in now. Also I don't think I knew that Hiatus Kaiyote were Australian but could guess it immediately from how high they debuted here  I wasn't familiar with them before this year but they've put out a few solid singles from this album! They seem to have, for some reason, become a big favourite for mainstream hip-hop/R&B acts having had their songs sampled by Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Beyoncé/Jay-Z and Anderson .Paak in the years since their last album release.

I don't yet know if that's a good thing. But hey I guess there might be some big new entries next week and so we're getting surprisingly close to ousting Capaldi from the top 50. As it stands, this week is so slow that all of the 4 longest running top 50 hits of all time are simultaneously in the top 50. The highest new entry is "Thot Shit", which unless it gets another quote unquote remix is Megan's only solo top 50 hit as it stands, after "Body" just barely missed out. Galantis also fluke a top 50 for the first time in many years. A couple of years ago I noted that Jimmy Barnes has the record for the most #1 albums by any artist. Now he's extended that with his 13th #1, and that doesn't include the 5 further #1's he's gotten with Cold Chisel. Suffice to say that this country's love of "Khe Sanh" and "Working Class Man" has had significant legs. He leads a very slow week that only also includes a debut for a live Seekers album, and now the bar is so low that Pitbull's made the top 40. Queen got to #2 in the UK this week thanks to a vinyl release, but it doesn't get into the top 50 here because the "Bohemian Rhapsody" album is still hoarding all the Queen streams. I'm not saying I agree or disagree with this, it's just somewhat funny. Edited July 13, 20213 yr by Dircadirca

The Kid LAROI gets his 2nd #1 which if nothing else means that the "WITHOUT YOU" remix which I've still never listened to has even less reason to exist because now it no longer serves the purpose of giving him a #1 hit. Although I guess you could say that with two #1 singles and a #1 album, he on a vague metric overtakes Jessica Mauboy as the most successful Indigenous Australian on the charts, as she has just one of each if you don't count The Sapphires soundtrack which makes no sense but then people have said that Benny Blanco & Mark Ronson are one hit wonders because they only ever stuck their name at the front of one of their many US hits (I suppose Benny's done it twice now) and people who obsess over this stuff tend to be extremely convinced their illogic is logic. BTS have also once again hit #6 on the chart though I can't help but suspect that they're due for a big decline on both of their singles this week unless the army see this message and choose to prove me wrong out of spite. Billie Eilish's latest single does a little better than her last at least on the surface as it had worse streaming figures just against weaker competition than "Lost Cause". Sadly it looks to exit the chart just as quickly. Not doing that is Post Malone's cowardly SEO-baiting "Motley Crew" which looks to at least climb in its 2nd week. On the album chart it's a slow enough week for Olivia to return to #1. Doja Cat is stuck at #3 for a 3rd week which reminds me to say that "Ain't Shit" is also still missing from the ARIA Chart which is en route to overtaking "Kiss Me More" on Spotify. Anyway Tkay Maidza put out another great EP so listen to that. DZ Deathrays were possibly victims of unmatched format release dates to keep Part 1 of "Positive Rising" out of the top 20, but this week Part 2 lands at #4, matching their previous best set in 2018. Perhaps most interesting this week is the 25th anniversary re-release of Australian rock royalty Magic Dirt sees the band reach the top 10 for the first time ever in their career. Just behind them curiously is duo Jess & Matt, who got famous as finalists on X Factor, but while most of that show's output struggle to find chart positions even 12 months after the fact, here they are reaching #11 some 6 years down the track. This is their 4th time making the top 20. Speaking of Australian stalwarts, another big shout out can go to Cosmic Psychos, who have been around for nearly 4 decades, but only recently have been seeing chart positions, so now their latest album at #19 is their highest ever charter. Vince Staples also returns with his 4th top 50 album. Next week is near impossible to predict with a bunch of notable but not sure bets, which means that it's possible that Olivia just retains #1. But if she doesn't, it'll be between John Mayer, Tones and I, KSI and Pop Smoke, while Chet Faker and Diesel probably figure somewhere as well. Edited July 21, 20213 yr by Dircadirca

There's not much to note at the top of the chart really apart from I guess "Missing Piece" is now Vance Joy's 3rd highest charter. "Ain't Shit" is still missing and doesn't appear to be debuting next week while it should probably be in the top 20. "Woo Baby" manages to debut in the top 30 for Pop Smoke despite not gaining "Demeanor"'s streams, while "Tell The Vision" nearly becomes Pusha T's highest charting entry in which he is credited individually, because of course "Like I Love You" made the top 10, but "Runaway" sadly only got to #46. Next week could prove to be interesting as while the top 4 are pretty locked in place at present, Lil Nas X is looking to make a splash in the top 10 with "INDUSTRY BABY", and maybe The Kid LAROI's "NOT SOBER" will come close too. Sleepy Hallow & Dave look to be getting their first top 50 hits too while there's also a Camila Cabello song that Hot Hits Australia is extremely overcompensating on. Tones and I comes out on top on the album chart, the first time she's topped a main chart here since "Dance Monkey" finished its reign. Normally I would celebrate her consistently disgusting haterbase for having to take an L on this one but in actuality she's making dubious history with what I understand to be the first #1 album (and I think first charting album) to be buoyed by NFT bundles. ARIA being an industry of course tweeted about this as a mark of cool technology moving forward grandeur and not an environment destroying Ponzi scheme. And here I was about to give her props for not propping up her streams by just chucking old singles for streaming points which is the only reason Dean Lewis & Vance Joy have double platinum albums. Curiously she does have a deluxe album on Spotify that does this but it's not visible on Australian Spotify so she will reap the punishment on that. Moving on, John Mayer maintains his typical form with most of his albums reaching the top 5, doing so for the 7th time. I have to suspect something weird happened with the release timing of "Continuum" in 2006 because it spent two weeks at #12 so one must imagine top 10 potential was there. Pop Smoke's long running successful album of last year spent its only week at #1 on debut, so the new album is even having a worse start to land at #4. But maybe the real underperformance this week is KSI, who with bigger hits in tow this time around has once again been caught behind bigger debuts but this time even lower at #6. "Dissimulation" debuted at #4 behind new albums from The 1975 & Agust D and I must remind you is the highest charting UK rap album ever. That may be a short lived record though because Dave is showing great promise with his new album likely to land between #2 & #4. Chet Faker's debut album spent 2 weeks at #1 because we were all really interested in his decent but unremarkable singles at the time. He's had some funny career pivots since then including recording under his real name Nick Murphy and then changing it back when that proved less lucrative. I would make a remark about how actually he's charting even lower this time except he's not, except I don't even know if he should because his Nick Murphy album never made the ARIA top 100 due to ARIA bungling the stats that week which everyone but me forgot about. Speaking of solo artists with funny names who briefly recorded under their real name, Diesel is back at it again with a new album of standards. He's had two #1 albums and a bunch of hits of which I can only remember how two of them go. There's also a new Foo Fighters midlife crisis album or something idk. Next week is probably The Kid LAROI's for the taking as his album stimulus package is an extremely good way to exploit ARIA's streaming system (although in his defence his prior album cuts actually returned to the Spotify chart so people aren't just listening to the new ones & the hits from before). As mentioned before, Dave is also in a good spot to do well though he'll have to contend with Olivia's always strong streams and probably lose, while the dark horse of The Jungle Giants with their multiple vinyl versions and a paper trail of a drawn out singles roll out that's actually gone past 2 years now could show them landing higher than ARIA are initially projecting. Also there's Leon Bridges & Anne-Marie making an impact lower down while Bo Burnham still doesn't exist.

That'll probably change next week with "Industry Baby" which is Lil Nas X's 3rd top 10 hit and now Jack Harlow's highest charter. It's just ahead of "NOT SOBER" which will probably take a decent decline next week but it's not rapidly exiting the chart either. Or at least it doesn't feel like that but on the other hand, the #20-#50 section on the chart is remarkably close right now so who's to say it's not possible to have a sudden decline, like how "Motley Crew" was #50 on Spotify just yesterday. In another sense, this weird set up has possibly helped "Friday" now become the longest running top 20 hit without hitting the top 10, as it's spent the last 20 weeks between #12 & #20. Dave gets his first ever top 50 hit, and it's even Stormzy's equal 2nd highest charter behind "Ain't It Different". Sleepy Hallow gets his first top 50 hit though his name was misspelt on ARIA up until this week. "2055" will likely vault up the chart again next week. On the other hand, Camila Cabello's debut will likely not, seeming to debut purely thanks to inflated Hot Hits Australia enthusiasm which has toned down leaving it stuck just outside the Spotify top 50, possibly waiting for Billie Eilish to free up space. Conspiracy theory time, Spotify's Thursday night update was exceptionally late and who's to say that ARIA even got it. Probably not considering how steady the lower end of the chart is but either way, we have a new #1, with the dark horse prevailing and The Jungle Giants taking it. They'd previously not quite gone top 10 with their buzzy debut and super popular 3rd album (not the 'troubled' 2nd album). That 3rd album was so popular that despite having no charting singles, it's probably housing 4 different platinum singles. After that I got to see them play a free show near where I live which is pretty cool and they've since taken up the Tame Impala reins of scoring top 100 charting entries following Hottest 100 top 10 performances. Their two big Hottest 100 hits both feature on this album even though the first of them came out 2 years ago now. They beat out The Kid LAROI's re-re-release which only gets to #3 meaning that despite what I said last week, it's probably actually a victim of the streaming rules because it no doubt had high streams well deep of the 10 track stream limit. I also wrongly speculated Dave might outpeak KSI, where he does beat his latest album, but not his previous #4 peak, nonetheless Dave joins statistically elite company by reaching #5. Leon Bridges has a bit of a come down after two #8 peaking albums to reach #25, while Descendents get only their 2nd ever top 50 album, perhaps with this money Milo will be able to go back to cool leg. Next week is very likely to be Billie Eilish's #1 position for the taking, ahead of Prince, The Wolfe Brothers & Isaiah Rashad.
