Would you have any information on where Heartbreak Anthem or Kiss My are in the top 100? If they are at all.

Thanks

Nothing exact but Heartbreak Anthem is probably around #60 and Kiss My is not really making an impression here.

Thanks, I thought that may be the case.

It's an easy 4th week at #1 for "STAY", things aren't even remotely close at this point so we could be looking at a long reign. Lil Nas X interrupts the top 5 but might have trouble getting higher at the moment, in part because Billie Eilish looks to vault ahead with "Happier Than Ever", though in saying that, its longevity is not certain to me considering radio will hate it and Spotify is already withdrawing support. If you were just thinking to yourself 'how dare radio pay dust to Billie Eilish, I'd like to see what they think is more essential airwaves material, then I present you the next highest top 50 debut this week. Just this past week it posted the highest weekly airplay figure since Adele's "Hello", and it's Melbourne-based producer Jolyon Petch's blast from the past cover of...Fleetwood Mac's "Dreams", a song which is still in the ARIA top 50 right now. It curiously features vocals from Reigan Derry, who followers of Australian pop culture of the last 15 years might recognise from her stint on Australian Idol where she performed a cover of Karnivool's "Themata", as one half of pop duo Scarlett Belle who had some minor hits in the early 2010s, and then later in her stint on X Factor. In all honesty the cover isn't that bad and even has a low key "Blue Monday" vibe to it, but it's yet another case of the powers that be insisting that we pay disproportionate attention to FAMILIAR MELODY, as in the past year we've seen extended stints at the top of Hot Hits Australia for Brando's "Look Into My Eyes", Wiz Khalifa's "The Thrill" and now this, all doing the bare minimum in response to this monstrous leg up. Silk Sonic also return though are having trouble getting off the ground, while mixed in with a lot of Billie Eilish entries is a new entry for Shouse whose "Love Tonight" has long had streaming traction but is starting to blow up in part thanks to a David Guetta remix although the lion's share of its streams are coming from the 2017 edit.

Billie Eilish had the best selling album of 2019 so it should come as no surprise that she scores her 2nd #1 this week. Curiously her vinyl sales don't seem to be counted yet so if they get added to the mix this week she likely will be able to retain the top spot. Prince scores a posthumous chart entry at #5 which is also his highest debut in nearly 20 years. Tasmanian country group The Wolfe Brothers score their 3rd top 10 album and highest ever charter at #6, which slightly surpasses the #7 peak set earlier this year by fellow members of our smallest state Luca Brasi. I also want to point out because ARIA album SEA stats are often impossible to make sense of that I noticed a decline for Pop Smoke's first album, which I attribute to "Dior" being re-allocated to "Faith", which I suspect will stay as such long term even though the former will likely long outlast the latter. Isaiah Rashad also gets his first ever chart entry here.

"STAY" is #1 for a 5th week to no shock. Though the rest of her album is out, Billie Eilish does climb up to #3 with "Happier Than Ever", matching "my future" as the equal highest charter from it. The Weeknd gets his 5th ever top 10 debut and tragically Dr. Luke has two songs in the top 10 currently. For those keeping track, there are now two Doja Cat songs missing from the chart, next week possibly three. KSI gets his 2nd top 50 hit. Nobody should need to care that The Voice Australia is back on TV, and while last week we had a gracious reprieve of Lewis Capaldi in the top 50, we can't always be so lucky so auditioners on The Voice covered two of his songs in two days. For the first time ever, "Before You Go" hit #1 on iTunes which is enough to get back into the top 50. They also covered "Bruises" which you might scarcely recall was also covered on The Voice Australia last year which is how it got its solitary week in the top 50 before. Despite the fact that this was on the Sunday of last week, the magic of streaming momentum means that he'll probably still be climbing again next week.

As predicted, Billie Eilish leverages big vinyl sales to manage a 2nd week at #1. The highest debut of the week comes from Youngn Lipz, one of the bigger names in the modern wave of Australian hip hop most noted for the ARIA Charts' severe inability to keep up with it. He's never charted before because his biggest hits just weren't scanned, with the not-counting exception of his contribution to the remix of "Rover" last year. Just a little lower is a vinyl return for George Harrison's first album. While I am on the run of reminding everyone that our charts are fraudulent, Nas gets his first top 50 album in nearly a decade. It's not that he's seeing new found popularity, but that 2018's "NASIR" didn't get its streams to count which I suspect should've netted a top 20 debut. Riding off a run of moderately popular singles, local singer MAY-A charts for the first time with an EP. A similar result with a different approach is true of Tom Cardy, who is largely famous for appearing on triple j radio to do song parodies. Next week The Killers could perhaps take the top spot, charting alongside Luke Hemmings, Jungle, Polish Club & $uicideBoy$

"STAY" is #1 for a 6th week with absolutely no competition in sight, which will mostly be amusing when it's potentially still #1 3 months later but not even nominated for Song Of The Year at the ARIA Awards. I also must warn you that I have a rant incoming, for we have a new debut in the top 10. "Cold Heart" is Elton John's first appearance in the top 10 since "Ghetto Gospel", or if you're not willing to count that, then "Something About The Way You Look Tonight / Candle In The Wind 1997". This is not an unprecedented track as of course Pnau made an entire album of Elton John mashups & such, curiously this has outpeaked "Rocket Man" and likely will outpeak "Sacrifice" next week. My beef with this record is that in this 2020s decade in which a pandemic has swept across the world, the arts have suffered heavy pushback, especially on a local level. Our government which we've unfortunately been stuck with for the last 8 years continues to be hopeless at compensating, and our local broadcasters have made no effort to improve their already below bare minimum effort in supporting local arts. Which is to say that we are supposed to have a quota of Australian content but it's always skirted by either shoring it up during the late hours when nobody's listening, or just plain not bothering, despite constant signs that the public are happy to hear and support it. Make no mistake that if there is a quota being met, it will only be just that, so Australian content often is indirectly competing with itself. But what always seems to take priority is Australian content that's internationally approved, or rather signal boosting international stars. We have a wealth of local content that needs all the help it can get, but it's going to get muscled out of a chance for all the spins going to Dua Lipa or a cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Dreams" which by the definitions used, count as Australian content. Which is kind of a bit shit to be honest. Speaking of which, that "Dreams" cover reaches the top 20 and becomes the highest chart entry ever for vocalist Reigan Derry, outpacing her #20 peaking cover of "Stay With Me" by Sam Smith. On an unrelated note to "Stay With Me" by Sam Smith, we have a new entry to the top 50 which is not at all a cover of "Stay With Me" by Sam Smith, instead it's Mimi Webb's "Dumb Love", which is her first time in the chart after "Good Without" never really took off here. Lizzo also returns to the chart with her 3rd top 20 hit though I can't say for certain if it has any chart ascent in its future. Also our barometer of whether or not it's a slow week, "Mr. Brightside", is back for the 2nd time this year.

As further evidence that the general public will happily buy into our local product, we have a new #1 this week from Luke Hemmings. 5 Seconds Of Summer have hit #1 with all 4 of their albums thus far, though the first solo outing from Ashton could only manage a #37 peak, in part due to a staggered format release. Luke on the other hand goes right to the top in spite of almost no broadcaster support. He beats out competition from The Killers, who had previously hit the top 5 with all 6 of their studio albums, including the last two going to #1 but this more low key release can only match the peak of "Sawdust". Local band Polish Club score their first ever top 10 peak after two top 20 peaking albums previously, while surprisingly Jungle also score their first top 10 and even top the vinyl chart this week. They're all swapping with $uicideBoy$ who previously reached #10 but this week only manage #18. Also perhaps disappointing is Dan + Shay who land considerably lower than the #15 peak they reached before producing a huge top 5 smash in "10,000 Hours", which oddly left the Spotify top 200 for the first time this week. Next week Lorde will attempt to make it 3 for 3, alongside entries for Tropical F*ck Storm, Holy Holy, Angus & Julia Stone and Trippie Redd.

"STAY" is #1 for a 7th week. It'll be #1 for an 8th week too. Kanye West did briefly overtake him on Spotify but I'm skeptical he'll even get his limited week's coverage accurately reported, which he's no stranger to with the botched chart for "ye"'s release. I also have no idea what they're going to do about the Pt.2's and the inconsistent data reporting which they may or may not take at face value. Next week's chart will be interesting I guess. As for this week, Ed Sheeran has a big debut for "Visiting Hours", which I believe has charted higher in Australia than anywhere else, which makes sense as it's an ode to Aus music industry legend Michael Gudinski who passed away earlier this year, and Ed performed it at his funeral. Also debuting this week is Clinton Kane, who has never quite charted before but looks set to do pretty well with this one in the coming months. He of course joins Australia's long tradition of dudes with two first names. Lorde also gets a 2nd top 50 hit from her new album though it'll be sadly very short lived. Skrillex is back with an artist credit for the first time in years.

Australia has long been Lorde's 2nd best market so it should come as little surprise that she scores a 3rd #1 album here. It is unclear whether or not ARIA counted the non-CD containing albums she was selling. Holy Holy missed the top 10 with their last album but now get a new high of #4. Tropical F**k Storm also get their 2nd top 10 and highest charter, and it's kind of weird to me considering The Drones never got that high. Trippie Redd charts haphazardously on a regular basis but now he has his first top 10 album, while Australian country legend Slim Dusty charts yet another posthumous collection. Angus & Julia Stone usually chart at or close to the #1 spot although their soundtrack album for the latest Life Is Strange game is charting in the top 20 without (I believe) a physical release which is impressive in its own right. I'm also not certain a video game soundtrack has ever made the top 50 before. As a fun side note, Kanye's masterpiece MBDTF is back in the top 50 for the first time in about a decade, and it's possibly because I told ARIA it wasn't being counted on the survey. Next week was already a bumper week for releases before Kanye asserted himself. The lack of a full week or physical release means that I can't even say he's certain for #1, as Bliss N Eso have strong past form, their last album had a better opening week than Kendrick Lamar's "DAMN." the same month. Halsey thus will be aiming for her 4th #2 album, while CHVRCHES, Gretta Ray, OneRepublic & Ngaiire should be in the mix too.

It's an 8th uncontested week at #1 for "STAY". It's spent its entire chart run at #1 thus far which is of course notable as it gives it a record to chase, Ed Sheeran's "Shape Of You" having spent its first 13 weeks on the chart at #1 (just surpassing a long held record by Eminem's "Lose Yourself" which managed 12 weeks). Conveniently it might be up to Ed Sheeran to topple it but also I can't not acknowledge the potential for Drake to snatch the top spot next week. "Girls Want Girls" is already off #1 on Spotify & Apple but it's possible it had a good enough start to hold on for the rest of the week. Either way Drake will probably be content to break a record that Kanye West just set (SEGUES FOR DAYS) regarding the most top 50 debuts in a single week. 19 tracks from "DONDA" debuted in the top 50 this week which beats the old record of 16 from Taylor Swift last year. ARIA's midweeks had Drake's entire album in the top 50 and only "The Remorse" looks like it might slip out but even then it could still make it. As for Kanye, this week's edition of what is ARIA doing is the fact that we have "Hurricane (Version 2)" whatever that means, I guess Kanye fixed it. Whatever it means, it's Kanye's highest chart entry since "I Love It" made #4 in 2018, and the last time he got higher than that was "FourFiveSeconds" at #1 in 2015, but if you want to talk about just lead Kanye stuff for Kanye projects, then you have to go back to "Stronger"'s #2 peak in 2007. Also that throwaway remix thing is now Pnau's highest ever chart entry. Radio loves it because of course it does. Another interesting thing that happened this week is that ARIA finally decided to include all of Doja Cat's non-Dr. Luke songs, so "Woman" and "Get Into It (Yuh)" both finally debut, while "Ain't Shit" of course is also being included now that it's not high enough to make the top 50. This all coalesces into an interesting week of drop outs where not only are we spared of Capaldi again, not only do we only have 1 version of the Fleetwood Mac song that went viral on TikTok a year ago, but we also lose "Blinding Lights" by The Weeknd for the first time ever. The Weeknd thus logged 91 consecutive weeks in the top 50 which is 1 more than "Someone You Loved" managed by 1 less than "Dance Monkey" managed. This record will thus stand for at least another 45 weeks though nearest competitor "Levitating" is starting to show its age on the Spotify chart, so clearly we should be looking out for "Heat Waves" which apparently even in Australia some people still haven't heard enough for three lifetimes so it's climbing back into the top 10 despite the competition. Oh and BTS return to the top 50 thanks to the Megan Thee Stallion remix of "Butter".

Kanye West also gets to #1 in what was probably a closer battle than you might expect. It's his 4th #1 album which is all of his studio albums since "Yeezus" except for "The Life Of Pablo" which only recently logged its first ever chart position in Australia. For the first time in a long time, this means Bliss N Eso have to settle for not quite #1. They've had 3 consecutive #1 albums since 2010 though this is also their first album in a long time to not really have a crossover hit of any capacity, so people would be forgiven for not even realising they had a new album out. Kanye's midweek release also disrupts a tradition as for the first time ever, a Halsey album does not debut at #2, instead settling for #3. This is a bit of a banger week for me because perhaps my

songs of the year both came out in album form. Perhaps enough people heard "Miracle" in time to not buy CHVRCHES' 3rd album on release because they've ascended just a little bit up from a #7 debut to a #6 debut on their 4th, previous best form is "Every Open Eye" reaching #3. It's also release week for Australian singer-songwriter Gretta Ray and her debut album. She came to national attention winning triple j's Unearthed High competition for her damn excellent debut single "Drive" in 2016 and has been steadily releasing material ever since, though only material from the last 10 months has ended up on this album. In-between these, another long awaited album, this time OneRepublic arrives in the top 10, which is their lowest position but maintains an almost perfect record of top 10 albums (even Ryan Tedder has acknowledged that Australia wasn't interested in their 2nd album, which didn't even make the top 50). With how many streaming hits it has, it might be one of the better chances to stick around on the chart a bit. The Bronx score their highest ever chart position with what is not actually their 6th album if you count all the Mariachi El Bronx albums, while another one of my favourite songs of the year arrives via Ngaiire's 3rd album "3", her highest ever debut. Lil Tecca also sneaks in, quite a bit lower than the prequel album got. Next week looks like Drake's for the taking, with Iron Maiden & Imagine Dragons along for the ride.
yikes at the sheer amount of Kanye in this chart and I suppose Drake next week as well, ARIA need to take a note from OCC.

I dunno I've never understood the overblown reaction. The whole chart is otherwise just cosplaying as ''organic popularity'' by way of playlists that give most current hits a huge leg up, and if that's still not enough to beat the big new album, well who cares we'll go back to our Fleetwood Mac purgatory in a few weeks anyway. Take out Kanye and this is one of the most boring weeks ever on the chart.

I am dreading the casual racism of ARIA commenters when Drake makes ABBA not chart as high as they would have, had they released on a sensible week though.

"STAY" lasts a 9th week at #1, matching the chart run of Justice Crew's "Que Sera" as the 2nd longest reigning Australian #1 single unless you want to go back to pre-ARIA and count Daddy Cool's 10 week reign for "Eagle Rock". If it wants to become the longest reigning Australian #1, it will have a slightly longer way to go than Matt Amodio does on Jeopardy! right now to take the longest reign on there. And yes, this is when we begin to genuinely consider if Mariah Carey will be what knocks The Kid LAROI off the #1 spot. I know I mentioned Ed Sheeran last week but he's lagging behind on streams and doesn't look like he'll have the sales prowess that "Bad Habits" had, I don't think this one actually has CD Singles over here this time either but I could be wrong. Anyway, Drake is narrowly pipped to the post to take his highest chart position since 2017 with "Girls Want Girls". "Fair Trade" also becomes Travis Scott's equal highest charting entry alongside "HIGHEST IN THE ROOM". Prior to this week there had been two top 10 hits with 'Future' in their title, but only this week does Future get there for the first time, having gotten as high as #11 with "Life Is Good". In case you were wondering, Drake's 5/10 hold of the top 10 is not quite a record, as Billie Eilish managed 6/10 2 years ago. He does however narrowly take away Kanye's record he just set last week of having the most simultaneous top 50 entries with 20. The final track on "Certified Lover Boy" didn't quite hold on strong enough throughout the week to stay in, despite appearing there in the early midweeks. With more Drake going in than Kanye going out this week, you'd expect there to be no re-entries, but The Voice has come through in clutch to bring back "drivers license" despite it not really recovering in streams because iTunes sales are OP. Also the award for worst timed release goes to ABBA's label, who perhaps could only have chosen about 10 worse weeks at any point in the last 40 years to return to the chart to make the most impact, though they do land in the top 40 with both singles.

If Kanye getting to #1 was a close call, Drake getting there certainly was not. He picks up his 4th #1 album which ties him with Kanye West as the solo rappers with the 2nd most, quite a distance behind Eminem. Perhaps a better chosen week could have worked also for Iron Maiden, who score their 3rd top 3 album having not reached #1 yet. Last week Halsey ruined her holding pattern of #2 peaks, and this week Imagine Dragons ruin their pattern of #4 peaks as their 5th album debuts at #10. Stray Kids get their first ever entry, while Lady Gaga comes through with a remix album. Noted son of Jimmy Barnes, David Campbell has his semi-regular return to the chart while for the first time the excellent Little Simz scores a chart entry with her latest album. Perhaps all the people who listened to Drake's new album and pretended to be shocked when they didn't like it could've drawn their attention to the better major hip hop release that week. Next week in the world of strangely named Australian bands we will have new entries for Amyl and the Sniffers and also Pist Idiots. Perhaps also getting through could be Steps, The Black Sorrows, Baby Keem & Kacey Musgraves.

"STAY" holds #1 for an 11th week in a row. Next week it will tie "Lose Yourself" for the second longest unbroken reign for a #1 debut. Lil Nas X scores a slight new peak thanks to his album release for "INDUSTRY BABY" while his stealthy cover of "White Lies" by Max Frost also debuts in the top 10. He has no other debuts however because ARIA did a funny, whether this is just typical affair or a new outrageous reaction to people who hate Drake but otherwise don't engage with chart news probably won't be clear until Ed Sheeran releases his album. Speaking of Drake, "Fair Trade" overtakes "Girls Want Girls" so he actually has a different highest track in Australia, the UK & the US (and New Zealand nearly had "Knife Talk" as its highest this week). My own anxiety meant that I didn't mention The Anxiety debuting last week which is interesting because "t r a n s p a r e n t s o u l" was never acknowledged, and now "Meet Me At Our Spot" rides into the top 20. Central Cee has had a couple of songs hover around the Spotify top 200 this year but gets his first chart entry with "Obsessed With You", which is also technically the first time PinkPantheress has charted as "Pain" didn't quite make the chart. The omission of Lil Nas X (specifically "Scoop") allows Walker Hayes to crack the top 50 illegitimately (though I suspect he'll climb again next week). CKay also makes his debut thanks to the combined efforts of both versions of "love nwantiti", where the original is performing quite a bit better than the original. He may soon reach the top 10 if he keeps up current momentum.

Lil Nas X's debut album debuts at #1. His "7" EP both debuted and later re-climbed to #5 2 years ago and I'm not certain why that was the case. In doing so he narrowly fends off chart veterans Vika & Linda who of course scored their first #1 album last year. Iconic metalcore band iwrestledabearonce never charted in their heyday, but two members of that band went on to form Spiritbox who get I believe their highest chart position in Australia as their debut album lands in the top 10. It's probably not your wedding night, but it's a good week for people named Lachlan. Firstly we have Lachy Doley who has been around for decades primarily working behind the scenes for big names like Jimmy Barnes & Powderfinger. As a solo performer he gets his highest ever chart position this week in the top 20. Then more modern we have alt-country group Lachlan Bryan & The Wildes, who get their first ever top 50 album this week. Also charting for the first time here is Korean boy band NCT 127 and Australian country singer Natalie Henry. In a feat so rare it has to be remarked upon, the posthumous Gurrumul compilation that debuted last week has actually climbed to a new peak this week. Maybe there's still time for Doja Cat to climb to a new peak as well. Next week could help with those prospects as it's a more quiet week, with local debuts from Ruby Fields, Natalie Imbruglia & Darlinghurst.

It's a 12th straight week for "STAY". It should very likely be #1 this coming week as well but it's beginning to run into the thread of Hot 100 synergy which is to say that with America seemingly deciding to now get on board with this strange Elton John thing, it's been gifted more weeks of streaming momentum which paired with strong sales could make the jump soon unless Adele has something to say about it. Otherwise it's a relatively quiet week. Coldplay & BTS arrive in the top 10 which is Coldplay's 9th top 10 hit and BTS's 5th. It's actually holding up pretty well with streaming so it won't totally collapse next week. This might be the vacancy CKay needs to slip in as he takes a big jump this week. The only other entry this week is from Oliver Tree making his first ever chart appearance here though he was somewhat close to making triple j's Hottest 100 for 2020. In a rare instance, I don't think there's anything missing from the top 50 so I was barely right about Walker Hayes entering the top 50 legitimately this week.

On the other hand I clearly underestimated the tenacity of this week's album chart arrivals, as what I expected as a mid-top 10 debut for Ruby Fields is actually a #1 placing. She emerged in 2017 as an extremely DIY musician who even crafts her own equipment, winning over audiences with emotionally gripping singles, in particular the 2018 track "Dinosaurs" which placed in the top 10 of the 2018 Hottest 100 rubbing shoulders with "when the party's over" and "Be Alright". Our other top 10 debut this week is yet another Australian country group, with Darlinghurst coming in strong with their debut album. Making a return to the chart is 360's massive smash album "Falling & Flying" from 2011 which briefly saw him dominating the charts with an arguably claim to having the best selling Australian hip-hop single of all time with "Boys Like You" (a few Hilltop Hoods songs have since overtaken it). Natalie Imbruglia last charted in 2015 with an album of covers so she's back here with original material for the first time since 2005. Next week should see big new entries for Tony Bennett/Lady Gaga, Client Liaison, Pond & The Script

Ever since late July there have been two constants for me, Matt Amodio winning every night on Jeopardy! and "STAY" being #1 on ARIA. The former's reign ended this week so could that be the same after 13 weeks here? It'll definitely be closer but I think "Cold Heart"'s streaming momentum has started to stall a little in the last couple of days so short of some desperate extra sales from other revenue outlets, we've likely got one more week for The Kid LAROI until Adele does her thing. Elsewhere this week, CKay climbs into the top 10, and Billie Eilish returns, possibly helped by the rare feat of having two versions of the same song in the Spotify top 50, both racking up those sweet sweet incidental plays from people who hopefully won't notice her song getting played 1.5x as often as any other. Arz continues the recent run of TikTok hits with high pitched sample choruses while Joel of many surnames brings "OUT OUT" to the top 50. Stromae only barely reached the top 100 in 2010 with the Kanye West remix of "Alors on danse" so I have to imagine there are a lot of people hearing the loop for the first time here.

Anyway the real main story of this week is a big one so strap in. Australia has a reputation for larrikinism which to put it nicely often puts us well behind the rest of the world in decency. We are a country that regularly participates in the 'is blackface okay' or 'why can't we say this racial slur' debates. Honestly I imagine that the only reason we're not our own TERF Island is because we haven't caught up to actually knowing that trans folk exist yet. From this, we have a history in the music industry of abuse, misogyny and the like. Heck, the head of Sony Music Australia just recently stepped down after nearly 4 decades of being just generally terrible to his staff and anyone around him. We've developed culture wars out of this as anytime allegations come out against a band, those making the accusations are hurled abuse and dismissal. You all know about that but nonetheless it keeps happening. Now the year is 2021 and enter Rancid Eddie. They're a 5 piece band from Melbourne who hit it big on TikTok a few months ago with an acoustic version of their song "Dry". It was released as a studio track 3 Sundays ago and instantly vaulted into the Spotify top 50, and within a few days was entrenched in the top 20, getting as high as #10 once Hot Hits Australia got on board with it. So with its midweek release it wouldn't turn up on New Music Friday until 5 days after where it was gifted the top spot on the playlist. It was at this point that they started to get more of a spotlight as the nature of their lyrics with less than savoury takes about women started to be discussed. In the near two weeks since then, the band have released a series of increasingly bad apologies about distancing the performative nature of lyrics with an artist's real view point, and in doing so, the lead singer managed to repeatedly show their ass in replies doubling down on slurs & misogyny. As well as that, over the weekend more videos surfaced of the band performing even more unpleasant material referring to a woman as a 'c*m rag' and what not. So basically over the space of a single weekend the band sank their career in record time. But the song arrives here in the top 20! This is simple enough to understand since the chart covers the whole week and no matter what happens, you can't really tank a song that's already done enough in a few days to chart. I'm not going to completely be judgemental of the team at Spotify Australia but suffice to say they took an unusually long time to update Hot Hits Australia, leaving it completely untouched from Friday to Wednesday, at which point they saw fit to dump their initially unwitting support of this rising Australian band, as well as taking them off many other playlists. This is why there is a decent chance that we will completely never have to think about the band after this week as "Dry" may well drop right out of the top 50 (think it'll be somewhere between #45 & #60). Honestly nothing sums up the situation better than the band's last response this weekend (just after this ARIA Chart was released) wherein they called criticism of their lyrics 'the most repulsive form of punching down' as they're working class blokes and the criticism is coming from 'mostly young, privileged, university-educated, inner city champagne socialists', so you've heard it hear first: Women of colour are more privileged than white men in Australia, according to Rancid Eddie. They also referred to their detractors as 'sooks' and a 'social media gestapo'. Whether they are truly clueless or this is just a dog whistling attempt to court their new demographic I couldn't tell you but either way I'll gladly never have to think about this band again.

(I also mainly say all of this because there's been a lot of incorrect reporting (even from ARIA) that their arrival on the chart this week is a case of 'the Streisand effect', but in actuality, they just arrived low last week since they only had half a week of streams and they were always en route to a peak of this calibre. The real effect will be the collapse next week as they've been largely deplatformed).

On the album chart it's a slow week and Drake returns to the #1 spot, which is basically what "Scorpion" did in 2018 making them both his equal longest reigning albums at 3 weeks apiece. The top debut this week comes from Pond who you might know as that band who share a Venn diagram of members with Tame Impala, but have been much more prolific as "9" is indeed their 9th album and their first top 10. A little less prolific is Client Liaison who have been around for almost as long but are just putting out their 2nd album which also is their first top 10. Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga's 2nd collaborative album arrives at #11, their first entered at #7 and climbed back up to #7 2 weeks later so I guess it's up to how it gets promoted from here. The Script entered the top 10 with their first 5 albums while their 6th made #11 in 2019. That's not too bad going as they've not had a top 50 hit here since "Superheroes" in 2014. This week their Greatest Hits arrives at #16 and it remains to be seen what the streaming magnate chooses to think about it in the coming weeks. Australian country singer Angus Gill keeps charting higher and higher as he scores a new peak of #19 with his 4th album. Every week someone has to be #1 so fans of Trivium, The Hard-Ons or Shihad should try buying up because it's gonna be one of the easiest weeks to take the top spot. Don Toliver will perhaps also figure in.

A 14th and final week at #1 for "STAY". Regardless of what Adele's longevity prospects end up being, "STAY" is within an inch of being overtaken by "Cold Heart" anyway. It's an especially uneventful week, which I assume based on the people whinging 5 weeks ago is what people want but it gives me little to acknowledge. Justin Bieber returns to the chart with "Ghost" which narrowly missed the top 50 when his album came out, while LISA scores her first solo top 50 entry with "MONEY" which is set to climb a bit next week as well.

After a 3 month absence, Olivia Rodrigo returns to the #1 spot for an 8th very non-consecutive week, which is to say that less people listened to Drake this week. As Q4 ramps up you have to wonder if Doja Cat just missed her last good chance to get a new peak. The highest new entry this week comes from The Hard-Ons, a band formed 40 years ago that have achieved great notoriety but surprisingly never made the top 50 before this week. Their former lead singer was ousted from the band for sexual misconduct and replaced by You Am I's Tim Rogers, whose proficiency at selling records might go some way to explaining this boost in popularity. Trivium on the other hand are old hat on the chart and rack up their 7th top 10 peak this week. New Zealand's Shihad tend to have long gestation periods between albums but this is their 4th top 20 album this week, having gotten as high as #9 in 2014. Don Toliver makes a slight improvement on last year's peak position of #20 landing at #17. Current UK #1 from Sam Fender also manages to sneak in after his first album didn't quite make the top 50. Next week you'd have to think Coldplay have a good chance but don't count out Baker Boy's debut album that's been 4 years in the making.

I'm here to provide you the shocking revelation that an Adele song has hit #1 somewhere. I dare say that it'll stay as such next week too, potentially bumping up Dua Lipa's career weeks spent at #2 on the Singles chart to 17, which is certainly a record among non-#1 getting artists unless you subscribe to the theory that pre & post-2010 Maroon 5 are different bands. This is such an uneventful week but it is time to ring out for yet another classic 'Only on the ARIA Charts' moment. This week, Adele returns to the charts with "Rolling In The Deep" and "Someone Like You", nothing unreasonable about that but it's all the songs she didn't chart with that spark curiosity. "When We Were Young" in particular should have been her highest re-entry. The reason they weren't is because no Adele songs were allowed to return to the chart. "Rolling In The Deep" and "Someone Like You" merely got there because they've never fallen so low in sales to fall off of ARIA's survey, flawless logic honestly.

There's a lot more happening on the album chart though, where Coldplay score their 7th #1 album, having hit #1 with everything except "Parachutes" and "A Head Full Of Dreams". They faced surprisingly close competition from The Beatles' vinyl re-release. Coming through in 3rd is the Fresh Prince of Arnhem Land himself Baker Boy. He's been making a name for himself in the past 4 years for his energetic performances and positive vibes while often switching between rapping in English and his native Yolngu tongue. Alongside The Kid LAROI it means we have Indigenous artists at #3 on both charts this week. The Beatles are not alone in their remastering, as Kylie Minogue also returns for the 20th anniversary of "Fever", an album which I cannot in good conscience say revived her career here because unlike the rest of the world, Australia actually rightly recognises that "Impossible Princess" rules, and also "Light Years" was very successful the year before. But it does have 4 banger singles, two of which went to #1 here. On the topic of late '90s Australian alt rock bangers, there's also a return for Spiderbait's "Ivy and the Big Apples", the band's most beloved album possibly because it's the one with "Buy Me A Pony" (the first ever Australian Hottest 100 #1) and "Calypso" (the 'sunshine on the window' song that is somehow by the same band). In a different world of re-releases, Mac Miller's most beloved mixtape "Faces" was finally given a wide release, which as a fan of Mac Miller, jazz rap and all things

, I wholeheartedly endorse. The Smith Street Band's Wil Wagner may or may not be cancelled but he's here with a new live album, while Twelve Foot Ninja return to the chart for the first time in 5 years, just narrowly making the top 20 on a tough week having gone top 10 before. Young Thug scores his highest ever album chart entry this week, while Zac Brown Band are far from it, which one has to wonder if it's a result of their disastrous last album. Australian music icons Russell Morris and Rick Springfield (yes, that one) enter with a collaborative album under the name The Morris Springfield Project, while Ice Nine Kills get their first ever chart entry. The band have been around for over a decade so their name is not a Zero Escape reference sadly. Next week could be a competitive heat between Elton John, RÜFÜS DU SOL and Lana Del Rey, alongside further entries for Duran Duran, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds and Dream Theater.

Adele is #1 for a second week. It will probably be the last week as her sales stranglehold has slipped a bit. I initially expected Ed Sheeran could grab the top spot with either of his two current top 10 hits but his impact on Spotify has been a bit less than anticipated so we could instead get something much worse at #1. Much like 6-8 months ago, the ARIA Chart is locked into a slooooow period where we're lucky to get 2 debuts in a week that stick around. This week's top 10 entry that will be outlasted by "Heat Waves" and everything else is "Moth To A Flame", which is Swedish House Mafia's 2nd ever top 10 hit and 3rd ever top 50 hit, although they actually did manage to make the top 100 with all of their singles in their original run. Speaking of curious consistency, RÜFÜS DU SOL have had 5 top 50 hits as of this week although only one of them ever made the top 40. They've also had at least one top 50 hit from each of their albums, as 3rd single "On My Knees" was showing enough longevity after release that the album release boost slotted it in there. The one debut that will probably actually climb is Jason Derulo's, because it's not coin based. Mind you we probably should've had 4 debuts this week but ARIA forgot to count NEIKED's new song, so they'll debut next week instead, alongside probably 4 Ed Sheeran debuts.

RÜFÜS DU SOL claim their 3rd #1 album. They were close to a 4th but released their last album on the week that "A Star Is Born" came out in theatres. In fact, last time they were at #1 they were ending Adele's reign with "25" for good, which just goes to show how long gestation periods are for some. The new Elton John album debuts at #2 which I can certainly say is the highest chart position ever reached by Rina Sawayama, Yo-Yo Ma & SG Lewis among others. For the 2nd time this year Lana Del Rey beats all the incumbents but is at a lower #3 position. If you're not an Australian cis straight man over the age of 30, the phrase 'said you'd never get anywhere' probably doesn't hold some significance, but if you are, I hope I got that stuck in your head for the rest of the day. I have a long standing belief that the cut off for classic rock radio in this country is around 1991, where a significant audience has refused to listen to a single song beyond that point, making the newest acceptable songs "Thunderstruck", "The Horses" and of course the most overplayed song of all time, "Better" by The Screaming Jets. Newcastle's finest released their debut album in 1991 which got as high as #2 on the album charts at the time, and this week it's back at #4 on the back of an anniversary re-issue. Duran Duran have their highest charting album in 35 years this week, while Every Time I Die also continue their very slow but upward trajectory with an all new high at #23. Charting for the first time ever is Hayley Jensen who eagle-eyed ancients like me might remember seeing on their TV screens 17 years ago as the 4th place finisher on Season 2 of Australian Idol. Just below her, Parquet Courts score their first ever top 50 position with their latest album. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds released two B-Sides compilations this week though they were also released as a single package on vinyl so they may or may not have been combined under the Part II name, which if nothing else is consistent with Warner's release form that week which listed Part II first, which I noted as quite unusual at the time. Dream Theater quite often chart in the top 20 though this time they're lucky to make the top 50, so they might be pulling you under. Also Lady A are back in the charts for the first time since they awkwardly decided to change their name in solidarity with BLM only to completely show themselves when they changed it to a name already used by a person of colour and tried to sue her over it. You gotta love corporate wokeness. Anyway next week I hazard a guess that Ed Sheeran is going to debut at #1 and you'll also find the likes of Mastodon, The Spice Girls, The War On Drugs, Tori Amos, Dami Im, A$AP Rocky and Even. Something for everyone probably.
